770 for $299 at CompUSA

w/ $50 rebate (quantities low)

wls 2006-03-26 22:19

Is this a sign that there is a new model comming out next month or just a sign that CompUSA is dropping this in favor of Origami devices??

uNtouched 2006-03-26 22:24

It's a sign that I should get my as...up and go there to get my rebate. Don't look too much into it...Compusa is starvingf for money.

skynetos 2006-03-26 23:00

CompUSA is not dropping it. They have a HUGE deal with Nokia and it seems almost all of the Nokia stuff in CompUSA today was on sale. I got a nice Nokia blue tooth head set.

I also noticed on all the TV's they have like a CompUSA channel, and for a whole 5 minutes, there was a marketing video on the Nokia 770 in High Def. Very cool, went over all the features and everything.

The 770 is not going anywhere.

As a compusa Employee

As far as compusa going downhill... yeah... Our sales seem to get better and better as we try to draw in more and more people and throw off some of the old stereotypes of the company... Dont get me wrong, i think that half the employees are *****s... But anyway...

There has been a huge support on the mobile side of technology at compusa lately... We keep getting more and more Unlocked nokia and motorola stuff in on a daily basis... And there has been a huge response to it... I know that when i have people come in looking for a PDA and just want it to get their email on, I always push them toward a 770 (seeing as i am madly in love with mine, as are the other three guys there I convinced to buy one)...

No real point to that... just some insight

Bought one yesterday from Compusa

I got one from Compusa yesterday.

Compusa has gotten a little better. My biggest complaint about them now is the salespeople will tell you that things are covered under their insurance (TAP), when they are not. I even took the sales rep to Compusa's website to show her... Her response: Don't tell them it got broken that way. Compusa really needs to straighten out there employees on things like this.

I'm already a big fan of the 770. I hate carrying my laptop into the server room, so I can read a procedure off the web. This is going to be so much better.

SD69 2006-03-27 14:06

CompUSA has its problems, but some retail presence is necessary for the 770 to be commercially successful. I hope they also build the cellular side of the business, which has become so carrier centric in the US. I was looking for a 6682 to pair w/ the 770 and they didn't have it.

matmota 2006-03-27 16:31

I know that in Europe, used Nokia 770 prices in eBay have decreased in the last week. Before they were at almost the price new from Nokia (above 300), but now even some advertised as new can be had for 250 Euro or less from someone in Holland.
There are a number of the usual mobile phone scams (that now include the 770 in their list), but they seem affected too: I see fewer of them.
It could be just a side effect of the holidays, though.

Just so ya know...

The (TAP) plan listed on the COMPUSA website is not the one sold in store in this case (at least in dayton ohio)... The peripheral replacement plan covers wear and tear on things like keyboards, video cards, etc... At the one where i work Corporate told us to see the PDA kits on them... The PDA kit is more expensive ($100 for two years) But does cover damage to the screen (even acidental) and Theft assuming you file a police report. If any damage is done, You file a claim through our website or in store and a new one is sent to you in about 3-5 days.... If it is stolen, you come into the store with a police report... Its nice that all this is covered, the only down side is the hundred dollar price tag for it... Go figure....

Hmm... I'll have to dig up my receipt and figure out which of the assorted plans I bought for mine back in late 2005. I specifically asked about screen coverage, and have a copy of the coverage guide mentioning it.

Solace 2006-03-28 05:14

Yeah... Its kinda Weird... they changed their plans around late 2004... So any coverage that is clasified as "PDA" covers damage to the screen as long as you dont explicitly come out and say "Yeah, i got pissed and put my fist through it"... But falling out of your pocket and breaking would be covered.

rubik 2006-03-28 12:52

Thanks for the info Solace.

I'll try not to go ballistic on Compusa employees anymore.... I said try... :)

Solace 2006-03-28 17:16

Haha go as ballistic as you want... I will say that about 85% of the employees are *****s that constantly refer to any USB device as a "UBS" or "SUB" device... Hence the reason the other 15% are always seeking other employment
:-D

CompUSA SKU 295408 -- TAP 2YR RPLC $350 ($64.99)
UPC 0 73476-02008-7

Which translates to:

Carry-In Replacement Plan -- 2 Year

The CompUSA TAP guide I have is tagged with the following in the back-corner:

RPL
0704-HW
0803-PKG

Solace 2006-03-30 04:09

Ok... Well, As far as I am aware, The 2yr replacement covers it under normal wear and tear... Good and bad things to this...

Bad: Does not cover any accidental screen damage

Good: Does cover normal wear and tear... i.e: If the battery, wifi, internals, charger, usb mode, card, screen fail under NORMAL USAGE... As in if your screen stops working for no apparent reason, but is not broken... You just take it into the store and they hand you a new one... With the PDA coverage, You would have to file a claim and wait about a week for a replacement to arrive, and in most cases is a refurbished unit... So I guess you can view it either way... If they told you it covered screen damage though, I'd hold them to it. You will have to double check... i know it varies state to state a little bit... Thats how we do it in Ohio at least...

I got my nokia 770 for $370 --- without rebates ^_^
I am loving Xchat on this thing.
Gaim is a little slow and i often get out of memory errors when using it, but it's nice.

rattis 2006-04-06 18:50

Got mine at compusa. They had a low stock at the one in Detroit too. I was told it had to do with the upcoming refresh, but the droid also told me that he wasn't the handheld person, and that he wasn't the best person to talk to about it.

370ish before rebate. Waiting for the rebate check to be sent. Almost didn't buy it because I knew nothing about it when I saw it. I saw it, it said it ran linux, I was sold on those features alone :P

Droid said that to reflash for the latest image you have to take it to nokia, which we all know isn't true, and there wasn't any other software being developed for it, again we know that's not true. He said if it wasn’t reflashed it’d break over time, um sure… I’ve had old hardware break before the image broke. I've been thinking about going back and giving the droid an knowledge upgrade, so he's more informed on what he sells, but I think that would be a waste of breath.

infinitespecter 2006-06-27 06:49

I think I am going to pick one up tommorow. Are there any rebates or anything going on tommorow?

Odin 2006-06-27 12:44

Same as PSII, PSP, Nintendo, etc....

Does anyone know how many 770's have been sold? I am wondering if the Nokia buisness model assumes that existing owners will upgrade or that the user base will be added to.

Of course, this could be the end...

djmspringcreek 2006-06-28 18:17

The refresh is probably just the new firmware on new machines. They'll have new packaging, manuals, etc.

infinitespecter 2006-06-29 11:48

I picked mine up last night and it was the last one at my CompUSA. It looked like it had been opened before (the seal was broken), but another Nokia seal was placed next to it, so I took it. Got it home to find that everything in the box was all over the place. Everything seems fine though. I love this thing!

NokNok770 2006-06-29 13:48

Check to see if there's a crack near the power jack or headphone jack or usb....it's been known to do that.

infinitespecter 2006-06-29 22:08

No cracks anywhere. I would like to find a screen protector though....

A little late for comment I know, but since I've seen this mentioned before, let me add...

Did you know that six months after Nokia released the N-Gage, it was such a failure they announced an upgraded model would be available soon?

I'd think if they'd try and save a phone/game console combination, that the 770 would be worth the same amount of trouble at least... And since the 770 seemed to be in short supply when released (duh), it can't be a total failure, can it? Didn't they sell out the first production run?

Brad.

PS Just so you know where my mind is at, I think that Nokia is close to releasing an upgraded 770. Of course, close is relative. But I'll bet something will come up in the next few months (very merry Christmas for geeks, though it probably won't ship this year).

PPS Don't ask me what color I see when I look up at the sky ;-)

infinitespecter 2006-06-30 06:52

A note about the N-Gage. I had three and loved them dearly. While they were terrible game machines, it was very tough to beat them as cheap smart phones. For $99 with no contract I got a state of the art Series 60 phone, and that was great. I owned three because one was lost, the other was damaged when it fell down some stairs.
