n810 touch screen not working
today i was using my n810 and i go and lock it and place it into my pocket and a few minutes later when i pull it out to use it eveyrthing is fine except i cannot use the touch screen as if the touch screen doesnt work anymore. help thanks
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I'm confused. You pull it out of your pocket. Do you unlock it? Or do the keys work and the touchscreen doesn't?

Re: n810 touch screen not working
okay i think i know what is going on but still dont know how to fix it.
when i slide open my n810 or unlock it the touch screen doesnt work most of the time so i would have to slide it open and closed a number of times for the touch screen to work. then eventually when i get the screen to work it is calibrated badly and i would have to recalibrate it every time and when i calibrate it i have trouble pressing on the right side of the screen being targets 2 and 3 as i have to move the stylus to the right away from the target for it to recognize it. however dont have problems with targets 1 and 4 being on the same side of the screen (the left side). this **** is pissing me the **** off an i dont understand why this is happening all the sudden as my n810 has worked flawlessly since i got it about 2 months ago help thanks |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I have same problem here. I've tried to reflash to latest image (51-3) today and the problem remains or is even worse... It started some two weeks ago and is getting worse every day.
EDIT: sometimes removing battery helps for a while but that doesn't last long... is there some way to check the function of touchscreen via /proc filesystem? |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
i still have not figured this out. but it would be nice if i could fix it. because it seems a number of us have this same problem.
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I thought the issue was just me * lol *. I lose the touch ability almost right away and when I slide the screen a few times it may bring back the touch ability but then I have to recalibrate which doesn't always register that I am touching the screen. Anyone found a solution to this issue ? I have even gone so far as to reset / clear the machine

Re: n810 touch screen not working
Okay, now I can not even calibrate my screen !!! Please Please Please... anyone have any idea ??

Re: n810 touch screen not working
well aren't you covered over your warranty? (assuming it didn't expire)
and this is major - it appears to be a software/hardware defect. Why didn't Nokia IT devs realize this? They must be doing something different you guys aren't. Just an shot in the dark - but how about the lock software, maybe its not written right? Like it just might be configured wrong.... dunno... I don't got an IT, but i love trying to help on these problems, most of the topics aren't repeats... |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I got the same problem. After few experiments it seems me that the problem is somehow into the lock button. This button destroys the screen calibration. If I don't touch the lock button then after recalibrating everything is working. If I am locking the device then I am in troubles.
I am still testing. It seems me that this is a hardware problem and then everything is not good because Nokia service does not seem me good enough. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I can report couple instances when I have seen this happening too, and it had nothing to do with lock button.
Last time was yesterday when I used MaemoMapper. Suddenly the unit become unresponsive to the touch screen touches (I still could hear the click sound when touching the screen). The hardware buttons worked and using them I was able to close the application and reboot the tablet. After this it worked normally. So, since hearing the clicks the screen does recognize the touches, but likely the calibration got messed up so that my presses were recognized "outside the screen". |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I had a problem with my N800 where I went to sleep and my elbow was leaning on it all night :D
Took out the battery and all was well. Phew. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I have this same problem, it's really getting on my nerves, since about February it has been happening... please, someone say that they know how to fix it!

Re: n810 touch screen not working
I started to get troubles using Fbreader, but I don't think Fbreader is guilty.
I have usually the same scenario like in the original mail. Lock device, and then after unlocking suddently I cannot press the buttons I want, while the screen reacts on my tapping opening other things. Pressing home button I am capable to launch calibration utility, which does not always work properly (cannot tap the target). But after few tries everything works OK until the next lock. Since I did not installed anything last days, I am afraid this is a hardware issue. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Just got a situation when it happened during the session. Calibration did not work. Took out the battery and put it back. Now it is working, but...
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I have the same problem but it seems that if you just slightly press the screen part from them bottom (middle), screen works OK. So atleast in my case it might be that there is somekind of contact problem.

Re: n810 touch screen not working
Kind of solution:
I also found the similar solution. If you slide keyboard out and press by a left finger the top part of the screen from the back side - the touch screen starts working. Yes, I am quite sure it is some how electricity connection issue. May be if I'd have a screwrdriver and just adjust the screen tighter it might gone. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I just started to have this problem... Avigodner's solution works. I have not tried tightening the screws, but I will soon.
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Hm. Now it is being even weirder.
Most of the time, it "works" but is horribly miscalibrated, to the point the recalibration tool refuses to work because I need to "press closer to the target" unless I press far afield from said targets... which needless it say, does not help. Is there a way to "force calibrate?" Also, I can't find a way to tighten those screws. *Edit* Okay, it's dead... it is very hard to use the IT OS without a touchscreen / mouse. I'm not sure what to do; I don't want to buy a new one after just ~5 months of use, but the IT has become a real part of my daily life. :( Maybe if I install Debian, I can still get use out of it... |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Try just knock the device, I am not joking. When I slap it quite strong it comes back. Sometimes it is working for few days without problem, sometimes not. My problem is that I don't want to send it to Nokia by 3 reasons:
1. The problem is kinda floating - coming and passing, and I am not sure that nokia technician will find and fix it. To the best of my knowledge they will not send me the replacement device automatically like Dell does. Am I right? 2. I don't want be without the device for few weeks 3. I just don't believe in Nokia service anyhow. I think this is their weak point. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Mine went away altogether and I gave up and mailed it to Nokia. :( Thanks for the advice, though. I was also wary of trusting their service with all the reviews I heard, but unfortunately reproducing the problem wasn't an issue for me. ;)
I never got around to selling my N800, so I started using that again... after a couple of days, I realized no long amount of time Nokia could take would be worse than what I was already doing. It's really hard to use the IT without a touch screen! Especially changing connections and Canola. Getting a sticker and instructions for sending in the N810 was easy, at least. Only big issue I had -- you need to give them your WLAN id in ALL CAPS, any lower case letters and they say they can't find it. Using the N800 again is a big change. I miss the keyboard and form factor a lot, but wow -- I forgot how much more useful the face buttons and D-pad on the N800 were. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Let me know your progress in this issue. I might be the next. Unf, I don't have N800 to wait.
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I will; I mailed it the slow way (not that long, though), but I'll let you know how long it takes after FedEx's online tracking announces its arrival so you'll at least know how much pain you might be in for.
Ack, that bites... I was trying to come up with ways of working around my N810 being down before I remembered I had my N800 still and realized it's amazing how thoroughly these ITs get integrated into your life. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Here is my report on sending it in:
I mailed it on the 20th, slowest and cheapest shipping option. It arrived on the 28th, was listed as waiting for parts on the 3rd of the next month, and was listed as shipped on the 4th. They used USPS Priority mail, and it just arrived today, on the 6th. In total, it took 2 weeks and five days, but part of that is the time it took to arrive. Also, their site updated the various dates the day after -- like, I found out on the 29th that it had arrived on the 28th, and so on. The part they replaced was listed as "DISPLAY/LED" #4850070. I had reflashed it before sending it off as part of my repair attempts, so I am not sure if they reflashed it, but everything else about the unit was the same, so I know it is the same one. They also added back the original peel-off screen protector. ;) It seems like it took forever! It's nothing compared to the *3 year* epic some people have gone through, though.; they only took a week to fix it, and everything else was shipping time. I am glad I had my N800 to tide me over! |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I also gave up, when nothing ( slapping etc) can help. I send it few days ago by priority mail. I reflashed nothing thus I have some concerns that they may claim that I install something that hurts the device. :) Anyway it is arrived yesterday to them and I am waiting...

Re: n810 touch screen not working
Let me share my experience which is very similar. I sent my N810
(without battery) on June 2 by priority mail. They got it in a couple days, reported like on June 6. They send me it back on June 12 and I got it on June 14. The same part was replaced. It seems ok now. What is interesting I did not lose any data during these 12 days. The only thing I have to set when it came back was time and date. All other setting, applications etc were fine. Finally (if everything will work) it does not seem so bad. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
i had the same issue- it took 2 weeks for them to replace my n810- i received a a different unit
|
Re: n810 touch screen not working
Well mine died temporarily today
PANIC removed battery etc. no workee removed my screen protector which I slip under the bezel, it WORKs. I've been using the screen protectors slipped under the bezel since November, First time that happened. I'd suggest if your screen stops working make sure under the bezel is clean. |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
My touchscreen seems to have boarded the failboat as well. Touchscreen was acting erratic, had to recalibrate it every time I opened or unlocked it, and then I noticed that if i pushed it closed with the righthand side of the screen it would work. After about 2 days of that mess it stopped responding altogether, not even any tick sounds when you tap the screen. No screen protector and nothing under the bezel as I used a small piece of cardstock to clean all that mess out. So it's looking like I'm gonna be stuck using my centro for a few weeks and having to use one of my PCs when I'm at home now. Sad times.

Re: n810 touch screen not working
I have exactly the same problem. Hitting the n810 worked for a short time, but cannot possibly be the solution for the problem.
I will try to contact Nokia support and see what they say. I live in Germany, and repairs seem to be a lot more complicated here... |
Re: n810 touch screen not working
I am just about to send my N810 away with the exact same symptoms as listed in this thread. I tried removing my screen protector - no joy. For about a week I was able to delay the inevitable by squeezing on the right-hand side with the keyboard closed. Now, no response opened, closed, or half-way.
One thing I am concerned about is the possibility of this reoccurring after my warranty period is over. I imagine this would not be an excessively expensive repair, but having to do it a couple of times out of warranty would be hard to justify, cost-wise. Has anyone been able to get a feeling from the repair people about whether this is just a problem with early units, or a batch of parts, or just general wear? I had a clamshell Zaurus before the Nokia, and I had to replace a ribbon cable but that was after a few years. |
