Questions for Mac users - need your feedback please

Hi,

We're working on the next release of the ITVC application (see my sig for details and link) and we'd like to get an OS X version out for the community.

The question is that there 4 possible targets for OS X:
1) Intel with Leopard
2) Intel with Tiger
3) PPC with Leopard
4) PPC with Tiger

Rather than hold off releases until we have every single scenario covered, I'd like to get a release out soon targeting the most popular platform.

Can you please reply to this thread (or PM me if you'd prefer) and let me know which OS version and hardware platform you use for your video conversion needs.

Thanks for the feedback!
Victor

PPC with Tiger.

Can you easily create a universal binary for PPC and Intel platforms?

- 10.3.9 (so you know it's PPC)

I started a poll, so you don't have to tally posts; everyone just go there and vote.

(I myself don't have or want a mac, but thought this needed a poll.)

So why not a universal binary again?

PPC with Leopard, and I voted on the other thread as well.

This being said, I do not want to deter you from trying to help us os x users, but quicktime, mpeg streamclip or handbrake produce videos playable on the tablets just fine...

Thanks! Didn't even think about doing that. Good call.

Indeed they do. My goal is to create a simple, one click application for users who may not have the strength to wade through the numerous options/settings for power users that those apps offer.

I see. I hope you use the quicktime subsystem for the actual compression work.

Intel / leopard. At the risk of offending those who don't fit this, I'd say that the n800/810 is something "power users" use and those same users are very likely to be using intel and leopard. So, this target would work for the most users.

Yeah, I doubt if it's truly biased towards Intel. Leopard Universal would probably be the best bet, as it's much closer to a 50/50 split PPC/Intel.

Yes, of course. I am not a masochist, and I certainly don't like to reinvent wheels ;)

The General (as always) is pretty spot on. It seems that even in this power user audience the split is pretty close to 50/50 between PPC and Intel.

The issue isn't making a Universal binary (that's easy to do), it's just the testing time we need to devote to each platform - Intel and PPC. On the OS side, the Quicktime subsystem changed from Tiger to Leopard so the coding/testing cycle there is not trivial.

I'll let the poll run for a week or so and see what results we get and from that we'll direct our efforts towards the appropriate release.

I've got Leopard on an Intel MBP and an old G4 PPC Mac mini.

I've got Tiger on an iMac G5, but going to push it to Leopard soon.
