Why WLAN and USB speed is so slow? (test)

Why are WLAN and USB speeds on tablet so terribly slow? I did a quick test with copying 100Mb file from computer to N810's memory card and here's what I've got:
  • Wi-Fi: 7:36 min (219 Kb/s)
  • USB: 9:01 (184 Kb/s)
  • USB-host: 0:42 (2380 Kb/s) (flash pen drive --> n810 using famous OS2008 host mode:))
Usual example speeds, to compare with:
  • USB 2.0 Flash: 0:14 (7142 Kb/s) (computer --> flash pen drive)
  • Downloading from the web: 3:35 (465 Kb/s) (web --> n810 in browser, using wget or MaemoFTP speed is usually faster)
Thus WLAN speed is at least two times slower than downloading from the Internet, and USB connection speed is INCREDIBLY slower than it should be, considering claimed USB 2.0 support.
WLAN speed stays the same whether i transfer from desktop Linux or Windows. The router is Asus WL-500gP.
I did a search on the forums, but most of the troubles with speed refer to N770. But on my N810 this problem also exists "out-of-the-box" and is very annoying.
Is there any explanation to all these oddities and are they common among tablet users?
Thanks in advance.

I don't think you are testing the USB or WiFi speed, but the speed of either...

The CPU is you are using SSH
The Flash card if you are using something else.

If you can repeat the test from the command line and rather than witing the data to flash, write it to /dev/null and see what you get for speeds.

I don't have SSH, it's all was done in standard file manager, standard move operations by drag-n-drop:). And when copying from flash drive to the memory card the speed is considerably faster then when copying from computer to the same memory card, so it shouldn't be the MC writing speed restrictions thing. But WHY?

If it was through the file manager, were you copying off a windows share? If so there is a known performance issue with smb & wifi that is very difficult to fix. This problem is not isolated to the NIT's but the smb protocol just likes full duplex operation over UDP and that is nearly impossible over WiFi.

Yes, i'm using windows share:(. So this issue is unsolvable?
And what about USB speed? Is it just my case or general issue for all tablet users?

i built netperf for my n800 the other day, and tcp performance was pretty miserable. from memory, it was able to send at 4Mb/s, but wouldn't receive more than about 0.5Mb/s from any other host. by contrast, my big ubuntu box was able to cram 925Mb/s into my MacBook Pro, although obviously not over wifi. My NSLU2, running debian, was able to send at 64Mb/s over 100-BT.

From my linuxbox to my n800 i get about 700KB-1MB over wifi.
USB from linuxbox to n800 over 4MBs.

If anyone wants to try netperf without building it, the two binaries, built for OS2008, are here. Standard build, nothing fancy.

After reading your post i decided to try to do some copying via USB from Ubuntu. I've got about 2,5 Mb/s, which is much better than ~200 Kb/s I get from Windows. Seems the problem is in OS, however, the one i have is a plain Windows XP SP2, and other USB 2.0 appliances, like flash drives, usb hard disk, media player, work fast with it.

Hello Sashabe!

I am having the same problems with you. I try to transfer a movie file via usb cable to n810 and the transfer speed is very slow (and far away from usb 2.0 specification).

I use windows xp sp2 and the output is set in the memory card of my nokia (not the internal).

Have you found any solutions? Under a linux OS everything is ok?

Hi, Vicki, yes, on Linux everything is ok, 400 Mb movie copies via USB in about 5 minutes.
Seems most ITT users prefer Linux.

Linux is indeed faster. But I have a kernel on my N800 enabling 48Hz mode for memory cards & DMA disabled (which is said to be buggy and slows things down). I also disable the cpu_scaling.

Re: Why WLAN and USB speed is so slow? (test)

I believe it has to do with how the OS handles file transfers. For example, transfering anything from my Vista laptop (pre SP1, haven't installed it yet..waiting a month) is slow. Even regular file operations from one folder to another folder.

XP is faster, and Ubuntu is the fastest. Apparantly SP1 fixes it.

No idea why other devices aren't effected though (for me it's an all effect.. external HDDs, flash, etc..)

I did another test transferring a 300MB file over Wifi but this time using a linksys router with the dd-wrt firmware and was able to get 6MB/s :) Linux makes everything better!

Thanks a lot! I am installing Arch Linux....

I am also having the transfer problems transferring from my xp system via usb.

So, from what I understood from the earlier posts, this is not a unique problem. Does this mean that everyone running XP are getting less than 1mb per second?

Is there really no fix?

On my N770 I have 170 kb/sec (via USB) with bundled noname 64 Mb card and 88 kb/sec with Kingston 2 Gb. http://s13.rimg.info/0e2284c0baf40dd...938509ba02.gif
