Aluminum cases for N810
PDAir recently released an aluminum case for the N810 (Black and Silver);
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product...oducts_id=7317 It doesn't specify if there is any protection for the screen, but there is an extremely similar one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Aluminum-M...713.m153.l1262 And this one mentions: With transparent plastic protection. I asked Customer Service from PDAir about this protection but I still haven't got a response, so I wonder if anybody here has any experience with these cases. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I don't have any experience to share, but those do look pretty nice. I wouldn't mind a silicone version as well. I wonder how the touch screen responds through the case and also through a screen protector.
You would give up quick keyboard accessibility though, and you would have to pop it out to put it in a car mount as well- Although the metal would prob kill your GPS signal so you would end up having to take your IT out of the case anyway. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I don't know if you got a response or not but it looks like the the one up on amazon has a plexiglass screen cover:
Boxwave Aluminum cover on Amazon http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...YL._SS400_.jpg That means that I doubt that you can use the touch screen with the cover on. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
How do you attach this case to your, ahem, belt? I looked at the pictures on Amazon but couldn't figure this out. If attachable is it horizontal or vertical?

Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I was actually in touch with PDAir about this case when I was intending on getting a N810 (I got a N800 instead). The case does have a clear cover. The case does not come with any sort of belt clip though. That was the one thing I didn't like about it. HTH

Re: Aluminum cases for N810
Any idea how this case fastens to the N810?
The Siemshop ebay one says it comes with a 360 degree belt clip. As with all the other cases except pouches, you lose the tilt stand. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I noticed the one at Amazon too, I also got an email from PDAir saying that it had a screen protector. Anyways I ended up ordering from Siemshop.
I am not looking to put in on my belt, but once I get it I will report back how it turned out to be. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I have the aluminum one with the plexiglass cover. Here are some major points
-You cannot operate the touch screen with it closed (plexi sits above the screen -Durable case -Lined with neoprene to add shock absorbtion -Nokia fits snuggly into case by friction (neoprene grips it well) -Can slide out QWERTY with Nokia in case and case cover open -Difficult to pull stylus out once case cover is flipped open (I pull it out before opening cover -All hard buttons accessible with case closed -Latch sometimes a little awkward to open -Dosen't significantly increase over all size I have only had it for a week or so, so I can't go into long term usage details yet. However, I like it way better than the default gray sleve, and I feel comfortable with my N810 in my bag now. (used to worry about impact to my bag). I will gladly answer any other questions. |

Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I have bought two of them (one for my gfs nit) and i think they are quite nice ... not so heavy, not so big and a good protection i hope. Mainly i will read ebooks on my n810 in the train and so it is a must-have that the hardwarebuttons are accessible when the case is closed :o)

Re: Aluminum cases for N810
Ok, I bought the one from Ebay, although instead of the black one I decided for the silver one.
It arrived very quickly (~5 or 6 days), very nice packing and good quality. In general I think it is a very good value. It is very lightweight and it fits confortable in my pants pockets, although I haven't tested it with denim jeans and I remember that the N810 was a little tight there. To clarify it does not come with any belt clip, and I think they have updated the ebay page. It comes with the plastic protection for the screen but not for the camera, no big deal. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I have had mine for a week or two.
EDIT: I got it from Amazon for 29.99. It came within 5 days http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...Nexttocase.jpg I like that you can have the keyboard exposed while it is in the case and open. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...decaseopen.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...sideClosed.jpg All the regular buttons are exposed. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...yankee/Top.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...ankee/Back.jpg |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I've had my case for two weeks now. A bit more info that hasn't been mentioned:
Having used multiple metal cases through 12 years worth of various Palm o/s devices, this is a very good one and I'm glad I waited for it. I love the size of the N810 and was a big selling point to me; this case follows the "keep it as small as possible" mantra. The only negative I'd like to see improved in the next version is softer edges on the hinges. Otherwise I'm very happy. |

I received my case today, and overall I agree with the other positive assessments.
There were two things that I didn't like about it:
I decided that I'll keep the N810 in the case almost permanently, so I've made the following modifications:
I doubt that I'll modify the hinges myself, but a simple redesign in manufacturing would allow the cover to pivot further open (about 300 degrees, instead of the ~170 degrees that it now opens). This would enable the case to sit on a desk upright, like a capital "A", restoring the function of the missing kickstand. |
Re: Aluminum cases for N810
I just got mine a couple days ago, and also am impressed with it. I haven't found the lack of kickstand access to be a big deal. I just pull the n810 out of the case and use it. It's not like the case would likely protect the device if it fell while the case was open anyway, or would provide little protection anyway. I really like that keyboard access is very easy with no plastic covering the keys, and that it is both easy to remove and yet doesn't fall out easily when the case is open (although I haven't been willing to give this a true test for obvious reasons). The being able to see the screen for alarms & notices without having to open a case is wonderful. It is also very non-bulky compared to some of the leather alternatives, and compares nicely to the palm T|X in a leather case that I had been used to carrying around (just a tad longer, or I guess wider if you are looking at n810s screen, and no deeper or wider/longer[?]).
I haven't been a fan of hard cases for my many palms because they all seemed to negatively impact usability compared to the leather alternatives. This new hardshell for the n810 has made me a convert, as it now seems that the leather alternatives negatively impact the usability a bit more. The trade off is that the device is less secure in case when open compared to some leather cases. Of course, given many of us have somewhat different priorities and needs than each other, YMMV! Thanks to all those in this thread who got one and shared their impressions! |
