Unable to Install (Anything)

I cannot install any new applications to a brand new N810. I have upgraded the system software to 2.2007.51-3, and I am connected wirelessly to the internet.
When I try to install any application with Installation Manager I get the message "Unable to install ______". I get this for Skype, Camera, radio, everything.
I have the Nokia catalog enabled.

Anyone got any suggestions before I throw this into the ocean and consider it a total loss?

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

try reflashing to the most recent version of 2008 instad of 2007. I don't think 2007 is meant to run on the N810.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

2.2007.51-3 Is the name of the 2008 release oddly.
What does it say if you press details?

btw; do you have access to a linux machine?

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

Yes, version 2.2007.51-3 is what I have installed - which is indeed oddly named. When I try to install any of the applications the message I get is "Unable to install ______". If I attempt to install skype, for instance, then the message is Unable to install Skype. The message does not allow me to get any details. I can only close that message.
This happens if I either attempt to have the skype site install it, or if I download it and save it to memory and attempt to install from that file. Same error message.
Unfortunately I do not have access to a linux machine, only windows.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

Copy the files in the internal memory somewhere, format the internal memory, and try again. You could have the read-only internal memory bug.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

I think there is a general problem, not limited to the OP.

Try the Geneven Challenge to prove me wrong:

1. If you have Skype installed, uninstall it.

2. Then try to reinstall it.

3. Try the same with, say, Mauku.

I can't reinstall them when I try it.

I have the latest OS, the one referred to in this thread.

Ok, thanks.

It would be easier if you had access to a linux machine because then you could set R-D mode which would enable root access in the terminal, and then you could run "apt-get install camera" for example and we could see the output there.

Root mode may still be done but in a longer way. I'll leave it for now.

Nevertheless, when you get the error message, what does Tools > Log say?

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

Here's how I solved my problem, which was virtually identical to yours. It took about five minures.

I decided to focus on the Skype program. I found from the Gronmayer site what repository it was in. I went into Application Catalog and deleted all repositories except that one. I then allowed the registries to refresh. I could then install Skype.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

First of all, thanks to all of you having suggestions. I'm at a loss without them.
When I try to install Skype, for instance, the tools/log says:

hildon-application-manager 2.0.
------
Installing Skype 1.7.62.51.1
Failed using a MMC to download packages, Using default
E: Can't create directory at /media/mmc2/.apt-archive-cache/: Read-only file
E: Unable to lock the download directory

I will try the other suggestions later today and will report back.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

That sounds like the "read-only internal memory card" yerga mentioned. Try this simple test : open the file manager, copy any file from, say, your Documents folder, then move to somewhere in the "internal memory card" and try to paste it there. Does that work ?

qwerty12 2008-03-09 14:55

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

If it is corrupted, then you will need to format and put memory card back into rw as root. There is a workaround for getting for getting root access with out computer and corrupt mmc.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

Very interesting, fpp. I copied a file and attempted to paste it in my internal memory card. I got the message "Nothing to paste". However I can copy and paste a file to my removable memory card.
Sounds like the problem? Perhaps a "format" of this card?

qwerty12 2008-03-09 16:48

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

It means your internal memory card is corrupted. Unfortunately for you, app manager uses that card.

It will need a format.

Thank you Qwerty12....I'm going to try that now.

NP :)

But see if you can format it with menu. I have a feeling you will not be able to :(

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

Success! Wow! I backed up the files on my internal memory card to my replaceable one, then formatted the internal memory. I am now able to install Skype (haven't tried anything else yet), and it works!
I am indebeted to all who helped here. I'll buy the next round of adult beverages of your choices (or dinner, or whatever). I do appreciate the help very very much!
Now the magic question - well, two of them actually. Why was it that a brand new N810 had this problem - I wonder how many other unsuspecting buyers there may be out there. Secondly how did you all get this experienced with diagnosing and fixing such problems?
Above all, thanks a lot.

Re: Unable to Install (Anything)

This looks a LOT like what I'm experiencing for the past month (a year after James) on my N800. I can't update or install anything while on a boot from SD session. When I boot from flash, no problems at all. The background is simple -- I haven't done anything to the N800 to point to. One day it worked fine, the next day I can't update (and no recent Automatic Update alerts either).

So I'm sure I can reformat the SD and start from scratch, but it's a 16GB and I've got all my programs installed on it. I don't want to have to start from scratch.

Is there anything I can do? In this thread Qwerty and James talk about reformatting the internal memory card. If they mean the internal memory, cool... but if they mean the SD inside, I don't know what to do because I don't want to reformat.

Any ideas?

You need mmc1<>mmc2 clone copy, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29135! There is ONLY one in this universe and you are reading it...I am just joking :-).
Options
1) get a Acronis version 11 and above, back up your 16G on a PC and format your SD card and copy your backup back into the card. Remember you may NOT need to do anything on the FAT partition if they are alright, most of the time they are.
--------------------
xterm
gainroot
umount /media/mmcX (X=1 if external, behind the kick stand; X=2 if internal, next to battery)
mke2fs /dev/mmcblkXp1 (will take care of ext2 partition on your SD card, again, X=1 if external, or X=0 if internal)
--------------------------------------

you just formatted the SD ext2 partition while your FAT should remain intact, now go Acronis and do the magic.

2) Clone between mmc1<>mmc2, you do not need Acronis.
Format your ext2 partition on the SD and go http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29135

Again, ext2 partition and FAT partition are independent from each other. Most of the time, you do NOT have to do both. I constantly backup my ext2 between mmc1 and mmc2 and it does NOT disturb my FAT partition. I backup NOT because of crash, but because I install something new and improved my tablet and I want to keep the better version. And the two SD cards do NOT have to be the same size, provided the ext2 partition on the target is equal or larger than the source, e.g., if your 16G source is partition into 13.5G/FAT and 1.7G/ext2, you only need a 2G card to do your magic.

My recommendation is option 2, it is much more convenient, once you did it, you can even make that into a command or personal launcher and do it on a regular base.

good luck

bun

@StrykerMan2009: You have a completely different issue about one specific application. Please open a new thread instead. Post the *exact* error message. Catalogs: See the menu of Application manager.
