I'm a lefty...

Being left handed, one concern I have with my incoming N800 is regarding how I can possibly use the hard buttons comfortably when my left hand is devoted to holding the stylus. One thing that springs to mind would holding it upside down and using xrandr to flip the screen, which sounds as horriffic as it may feel.

It's a vague question, but would any lefties care to share their experiences / solutions?

When I use the small Nokia stylus, it's not a big problem to "palm" it and use my thumb to press the hard buttons.

I have a combo pen/stylus I got at Frye's. I've actually used the stylus to manipulate the buttons. You can also fairly easily slide your thumb up and press buttons.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure that as a lefty you've learned, as we all have, how to accomodate a righty world.:) For instance, it's almost impossible for me to use a mouse with my right hand....

Cool man. I also was wondering how my girlfriend will use (sometimes :) my n800 cause she's also a left handed :) But since some time I mentioned that she is doing very well with it :) Dont be worry about that - thats the habbit problem -so no problem at all :) Enjoy

I'm left handed, too, and it can be a little awkward, but not bad. I don't use the stylus much, so the main difficulty is in holding it in such a way as to use the buttons and interact with the screen. I often hold it in both hands and use my thumbs. I really don't notice any significant inconvenience.

I'm left handed too ;-)
I actually find it easy to handle the N800. I hold it with my right hand, hold the stylus on my left hand, and because all buttons are on the left side it is very handy.

I haven't found a solution for this, either. Mostly it doesn't matter, since the buttons are on the left and that can be handy for us, but playing games is a serious problem. For instance, Quetoo is hell to play as a lefty.

just turn it around and Presto! all the buttons are on the left hand side... Problem solved.:)

but you have to read upside down :p

You must have the Lefty N800. The problem is that the buttons (on all of the other N800s) are on the left side, forcing lefties to use the touchscreen / stylus with our right hand.

Re: I'm a lefty...

we lefties must reunite...against left-handed discrimination.
Like I posted on the vgba thread.

1000 left-handed people die from using products from companies that didn't have left-handed individuals in mind. Products made for a right-handed world.

Nokia surely wants to join these groups of companies.

Hopefully the xandr is a hit and made user friendly to install, and rotating the screen could help us lefties out alot.

Re: I'm a lefty...

I find the layout is great... with my leather boxwave sleeve/case thingy, I'm able to maintain a comfortabe and very firm grip on the tablet with my right hand... stylus and buttons with left. Plus the menus are all on the left.

I esp love that you can set quiver's 'filmstrip' navigation to the right side where its easy to navigate by thumb.

I feel sorry for right-handed folks. :)

Re: I'm a lefty...

I don't think it's an easy problem to solve.. my Palm T3 has the D-pad at the bottom, so it doesn't matter which hand holds the stylus (I think there's actually a leftie software setting too somewhere, to accomodate other things).

The N800 seems to be designed specifically for right-hand users, although most people aren't really right- or left-handed, they just have a right- or left-preference. I've met only two people in my life that were clearly right handed, their left arm was just an appendage - useless for everything.

But in this case the stylus is the problem - the writing hand is almost always a one-hand specific thing (well, at least if you prefer the hand-writing option.. with the on-screen keyboard you can probably learn to use the other hand, unless you're one of those few single-handed people). So, for lefties the N810 might be a better choice, as the thumb keyboard is always available and the stylus could be left alone (if you can stomach a thumb keyboard to start with.)

(If the N800 display could be turned 180 degrees upside down you could turn the N800, that would work except if you also wanted to use the kickstand).

I am left handed too. On the beginning N800 layout wasn't bothering me much but after 3 months it is bothering me more and more. Next feature for OS200x: rotate screen 180 degrees.

Re: I'm a lefty...

The only thing I would change is the location of the autocomplete words that come up when typing with the onscreen stylus keyboard.

they come in from the left hand side, meaning that as I type, the space bar becomes more and more inaccessible. Being able to have them right-aligned would be a big plus for me.

Switch hitter here, but sometimes being lefty feels like its a total stranger.

Re: I'm a lefty...

Left-handed users may want to check out the thread Canola2 on Portrait Mode. They got this to work by using XRandR (X Resize and Rotate extension) to rotate the entire X-Windows environment by 90 degrees. XRandR can also rotate 180 degrees, but you'd still need to remap the up/down left/right hardware buttons.

Perhaps if more people voted +1 for the xrandr kernel mod in the Canola thread, it might get incorporated into a future kernel update.

Re: I'm a lefty...

As a leftie I didnt find the N800 a problem - except for one thing - the scrollbar is on the right hand side, so to scoll down with the stylus I have to move my hand in front of the screen - a bit disruptive. With the N810 it gets worse, cause now the light sensor at the top left keeps on picking up my hand, it thinks its suddenly gone dark, and the lights dim, only to brighten up again when I move my hand out of the way. A simple 'Left handed mode' option which displays the scrollbar on the left would go a LONG way to sorting this out. Everything else is 100%

Re: I'm a lefty...

You can change scrollbar location via about:config

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Layout.scrollbar.side

Seems to be work well here :)

Remapping the d-pad is trivial with xmodmap. And for leftie mode, you don't even need to worry about resolution/aspect ratio dependence in software.

I am one of those few unfortunates who are strongly left-sided. That means, while my right hand is not a "useless appendage," I strongly prefer my left hand, left foot, even my left ear and left eye. Most lefties I meet are only weakly left-sided. I'm cursed with the most serious form of the affliction.
