Desktop is geting reset
My desktop is getting reset to the default settings, reloads contacts when I had the Personal Menu and the status bar icons return to default. I can't pinpoint when or what is causing it. Sometimes I will just pick up the tablet after it has been sitting idle it will be reset, sometimes after using a program in full screen it is set back to normal.
The control panel still has the settings set as I set them, but the desktop does not reflect the settings. I end up rebooting the tablet to get back to my settings. Does any one know where I can look to get an idea of what's causing the problem? Is there a log I can look at? |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
The IP display tool use to use my N800 to do this.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
It is generally applet (sidebar, topbar or desktop) that can crash, causing the entire desktop to go down.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I think it's OMWeather that gets me sometimes. But only if I'm enabling and disabling alot of applets at once.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Would I need to just disable an app or would I need to uninstall it?
Is there a log file I can look at to pinpoint the probmem? Or do I need to just remove apps unitl it stops, which will be painful. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Similar thing just started happening to me recently, and I was just visiting to post for help myself over in the troubleshooting section. On my OS2008 N800, all my desktop applets periodically turn off completely, and I simultaneously lose the organization of the launcher panel--it reverts to the default icon order. I would describe it as losing the persistence of several desktop settings (launcher panel and desktop applets.) I have not yet figured out if it correlates to any action in particular.
I think the problem started a few days ago when I updated a whole host of software, after enabling the "Temporary" repositories posted here back in December to fix a typographical error in one of the repositories. Updated software included Modest (probably NOT from the temp. repository), OpenSSH, and Maemo Mapper. XL1200c: have you recently updated or installed any of these? Log file to search, anyone? TIA. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I updated Modest and Maemo Mapper. I have not used Maemo Mapper since the upgrade and I completly colse Modest, I don't think it's running in the background.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Modest has never worked well for me, so I just uninstalled it and disabled OMWeather desktop applet. I'll see if that makes any difference and see if I can't narrow the problem down.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I don't have Modest. I have Maemo Mapper and I haven't noticed desktop resets. If you look in screenshots thread, you know how much applets I use..

Uninstalling the applets is not necessary. You need only disable them. If you can identify the problem applet, then you may be able to help its developer by creating a directory named "core-dumps" in the root directory of the memory card you have in your tablet's external slot. If that directory exists, your tablet will, well, dump core files there. Do note that you may need to clean the directory out periodically. The maemo developers won't be interested in your core files unless you're able to establish that it's one of their applets that's causing the problem. If it is though, create a bug report in maemo bugzilla. I expect they'll be eager to investigate and fix the issue. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I get this when enabling the clock status bar applet and leaving it on an alarm iirc.

I recently installed Maemo Mapper and made the "repostory" typo fix. Have never installed Modest. I use OMWeather and recently upgraded it. Haven't touched OpenSSH in a month and this symptom started less than a week ago. Other than that, the only update I've made in the past week or so is Canola, but it was happening before I did that. I'm going to some troubleshooting to help this weekend, beginning with uninstalling Maemo Mapper. Then I'll disable OMWeather if that doesn't clear it up. I'll post any noteworthy findings. Thanks for starting this thread! DF |

That info is 4 months out of date and no longer relevant. You want repository.maemo.org. Desktop crashes can be caused by a variety of things. Generally it's third party applets (desktop, statusbar, or taskbar) crashing that bring down the Desktop, but there are a few other cases unrelated to this that can cause it (most notably waking a Bluetooth keyboard from sleep, which causes it about 10% of the time). To prevent crashing loops, the Desktop restarts with everything reset to default. I filled bug #2614 on the issue, but got shot down. I'm still of the opinion that this behavior is broken and incredibly burdensome on the user (especially considering how unstable the Desktop really is in realworld usage). If they can't manage to make it just a little stable (c'mon, Bluetooth keyboards causing crashes ), then they really need to give us a faster recovery mechanism (I'm a fan of a "Restore my settings..." menu option after a crash). |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Problems here as well. Updated both personal menu and statusbar clock about 3 days ago. Starting yesterday my desktop seemed to 'reset' ... would see msg re: connection to wiireless network and the accompanying sound which is what made me notice. This happens while n800 just sitting on nghtstand lookingg ppretty.. Both status/clock and personal menu disappeear, but omweather, the only desk applet I use, seems unaffected. This has happeened twice last night and twice this morning. Fixes itself on reboot.. Can't really contrib much else other then confirm "that boy ain't right" :)
Perhaps worth noting that this started shortly after installing modest which I set to auto retrieve. I just turrned off auto retrieve which wasn't working anyway. Can't imagine this is even relevant given the frequenccy of modest's checking, and that resets only happened few times Good news is finally fixed it so modest nno longer bugs me about certs when loading. EDIT = Just happened again, so modest is no longer suspect and prolly never deserved to be. Was running off battery this time, always pluugged in before.. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
There is a destinct possibility that either statusbar clock or personal menu (more likely personal menu) has a problem that is crashing the desktop. But them disappearing do not mean they are causing it.
When the desktop crashes, the tablet reloads a 'safe'set of statusbar and task navigtor plugins and disables all home applets. The statusbar applets and task navigator loads are controlled by a library set in the ~/.osso/hildon-desktop/desktop.conf file referred to by X-UI-Policy. I have been experiencing this as well (and thought it was modest related) so I will look into personal menu. Out of curiosity, did anyone notice this with earlier versions of personal meni? |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Not personal menu, but command navigator did this twice. However, it didn't effect status/clock or anything else. Trying now with clock off and personal menu on too see what happens.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
well my desktop crashed today as well but i was surfing only and it gave me an error that said out of memory. Background became white and the taskbar theme looked wierd. otherwise it felt fine. One other thing is that when i did a manual reboot personal menu became contacts again. not a big deal though.
Btw, great job... made the tablet a whole new device for me. sai update: just reset itself again doing nothing but on standby, both personal menu and status bar clock dissappeared. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
12 hours after uninstalling Maemo Mapper, I have no crashes.
How could an app that's installed, but not running cause trouble? It makes more sense that it would be related to a running applet. Not done yet ... |

Re: Desktop is geting reset
With Large statusbar clock with alarm caused my N810 desktop reset. I tried it twice and reset happened when alarm was on. I uninstalled large statusbar clock and resets stopped. Personal menu has not caused any resets, yet.

So now I think LgStatusBar Clock with Alarms is our prime subject, but I'm keeping it because I love it too much. I'll just leave off the alarms for a while. DF Another 24 hours and no new burps. Only difference is I have no alarms set on my LgStatusBarClock. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I will look at the alarm code on Monday. You can always install the previous version without alarms if you don't use them.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I don't think that it is the status bar clock or it's alarms. I've had the status bar clock installed for a wile without any problem. I also was having problems with out using the alarm.
It could be the personal menu or a combination of programs. I don't think I had problems until after updating personal menu, but I will not bet on it. I re flashed my n800 last night and I am slowly reinstalling apps/programs one at a time to see what might be causing this problem. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Sorry for being out of the loop all weekend. I have had OMWeather deactivated all weekend, and Modest uninstalled, and have not had any desktop resets. So I am suspecting OMWeather, in my case. I also have the status bar clock installed, but I do not THINK I installed any update to it concurrent with the onset of the desktop problem.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I reflashed Friday night and I have installed my custom theme & icon, Status Bar Clock and OMWeather. I have not reinstalled Personal Menu, Modest, Maemo Mapper and a few other programs that I did not use much.
I have not had any resets is 2 days. I'm going to reinstall Personal Menu and see how things go. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I uninstalled modest on the weekend and removed all gconf entries associated with modest. I have not had a reset in two day while using statusbar clock and personal menu. I have OMWeather installed but disabled.
I am pretty sure I read that modest uses an alarm set in alarmd to poll for mail when you allow it to automatically check. I do not use alarms with statusbar clock, but I have read that some people do and are getting this reset issue. Perhaps this is a bug in alarmd? |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I've removed all applets and I still got a reset last night. I have Large statusbar clock (no alarms) installed however. I don't think it's the alarm code.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
It is strange that this only started happening recently. As far as I know, a lot of people were using the latest large statusbar clock for weeks before this started to happen. Personal Menu doesn't seem to be installed for everyone it is happening to.
It seems like a recently updated package has done something. I updated modest, started having the problem, removed modest and have not had a single reset since Saturday while running the clock and personal menu. I know some people have never even installed modest and are having the problem, so I am flummoxed. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
have anyone messed around with powerlaunch?
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I downgraded large/status/clock to the previous 5-3 and so far haven't had any resets. I'll
post in the event it continues. Still using personal menuu, modeest, and that volume/backlight combo app. I never did use the 6-5 clock's alarm tho. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I have reinstalled Personal Menu and I have not had any problems. I have not reinstalled Modest, and I'm not planing on doing so since I did not use it much.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
OK--recap. I deactivated OMWeather and uninstalled Modest and had not seen any resets for several days. So earlier this week I re-activated OMWeather and had no screen resets for 2 more days (did have a couple of unexplained, spontaneous reboots, though, which I think happened once before turning OMWeather back on also.) So today I re-installed Modest (did not run it), walked away for an hour and a half, and came back to a reset screen. Modest is quite clearly part of the issue. From what everyone else here is finding, it might also be a conflict with the status bar clock, which I also have installed. I have in the past set one alarm with it, but have not had any alarms set since the problem reared its head.
FWIW: I do not have Personal Menu installed--never have. Nor Powerlaunch. Every time I have tried to use Modest, I have found its bugginess frustrating, so I intend to uninstall and leave it off my tablet until it is out of beta. Does anyone know if the Modest developers are aware of this issue/followed this thread? I am not registered over at Maemo.org for bug submissions. |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Okay, I think to two common threads (and correct me if I am wrong) are statusbar-clock and modest. Does anyone have these resets without either of these two applications?
If this is the case, the most obvious thing they have in common is using the alarm subsystem (alarmd). modest uses it for the automatic mail checking, and statusbar clock uses it for the optional alarms. It could be both programs are using it slightly wrong, or there is a bug in alarmd, or I am barking up the wrong tree entirely. I wonder if setting the alarms in world clock would cause this problem. I personally haven't had a reset in almost a week after uninstalling modest. I never use the alarms in statusbar clock. Anyone else have light to shed on this problem? |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I have similar issues and I''ve even set up separate thread already - http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=18413 . I have simple-launcher 0.9.5, statusbar-clock 0.6-5 and osso-statusbar-cpu 0.6.1 enabled currently and I get 1-2 desktop resets a day.
However in the meantime the main question is: is there some way of restoring desktop along with all applets using some xterm command, instead of restarting whole device? |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
Control Panel -> Panels -> OK (just exit without changing anything) fixes the panel applets. Does nothing for desktop applets, though. :(

I would, but I'm way too lazy. I will vote for it, though! :D |
Re: Desktop is geting reset
There's one out there, I think...
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
General: There is the ability to compile a custom list of "safe" plugins to load on desktop crash. I am thinking of writing one that loads your currently selected plugins automagically.
|
Re: Desktop is geting reset
I've had desktop restart last weekend, so I've disabled statusbar-clock to check if it would change anything. Now it's Wednesday late evening, and I haven't any restarts since then. I guess statusbar-clock was a problem, then..
