N810: How do you carry yours?

Hi All,

I just pulled the trigger on an N810, and I'm trying to figure out how I'll be carrying it around. I want to keep this thing with me everywhere, much like the Treo it will be replacing.

Based on the threads I've read here, it looks like people are using Nintendo DS and PSP cases for their 770s, but the 810 is smaller, and I haven't seen any suggestions yet. I'm assuming then that no companies have produced cases yet?

I'm concerned that it will be a bit too big to carry on my belt (and may exceed the "ubergeek threshold" at work) so maybe some sort of zip-up notebook/PDA combo case would do the trick.

So, back to the topic, how are you carrying around your N810?

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

In my right pocket, with my cellphone. I keep the sleeve in the pocket at all times and just slip in it and out of that.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

N800 in shirt, jacket, or vest pocket, depending on weather and whether or not I'm wearing a shirt with a pocket. Occasionally in pants pocket, though I don't like to do that (feels riskier).

N810 is smaller, so should be less trouble in same places.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

I purchased one of those Case Logic "hard drive" cases for the small portable hard drives (for $10@). I needed it for other things - GPS, portable hard drives, etc. It fit's the 810 and cables, but I ended up saying the heck with it, I prefer to just slip it in my shirt pocket, like I used to slip the Thinkpad (see sig) in my pocket, back in the '70's. Sometimes I use the skimpy case it came with, sometimes not.
I do use homemade screen protectors.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

left pants pocket: n810 (+ headphones sometimes)
right pants pocket: keys, phone (recently got a 6120 classic) and change.

I keep my n800 in my sidekick id hip holster, people at school laugh but oh well... lol I don't like it in my pockets, it sometimes tends to slip out when i'm sitting down.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

Sounds like it's really pocketable! I didn't think it would fit, but I guess I'll see for myself when it arrives at the end of this week. (you all don't wear cargo pants to work do you? :) )

As part of my Master Plan to replace my Treo 700p (it's a love/hate thing... currently in "hate" mode...) I'm looking at using a Nokia 6300 (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6300-1800.php) as my phone, and as an internet conduit for the N810 when there's no wi-fi signal. It's about the smallest one I could find, and it fits nearly un-noticeably in my pants pocket. The carrier (Cincinnati Bell Wireless) is also contract-free, so if it doesn't work out I can switch to a different phone or provider with no penalty.

Anyhow, thanks for the responses... keep 'em comin!

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

Nope, reg'lar black jeans here. Lots of people seem to think the N8x0 (800 especially) are unpocketable. But it works for me, with anything but a watch pocket.

I keep mine in my right pants pocket, alongside my cellphone. It really impresses the girls!

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

easy fit into khakis, i'd say go with a better phone...
the tablet will replace the extra features, but definitly get a phone that will make the connection to phone easier
battery life too.....

Phone suggestion?

Importance:
1. Size
2. Bluetooth (compatible with N810)
3. Internet capable (see above)
4. Camera
5. No contract would be nice

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

One thing to be aware of: you can get dirt-cheap data (at 19.2 kbps, alas) by going with a Motorola iDEN phone (for Nextel), and using a Boost pre-paid SIM.

The data usage (always-on 19.2 kbps) is free, but the SIM must be topped off with at least $20 every 90 days to keep it alive, even if you use no voice minutes.

Sounds like that kinda cheapness/slowness tradeoff may not be what you want, but everyone should know about it...

I'm gonna take the plunge and get such a setup shortly, as I have University WiFi most of the time, it'll be nice to fill in the gaps even at low speed.

A black version of the Tumi T-Tech Flow Gear Bag:

http://www.tumi.com/tumi/gear_bag/pr...?modelid=87480

Enough room for an N810, USB cable, USB gender changer, headphones, painkillers (and other migraine drugs), pad of paper, pen and some other bits and bobs.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

I have 2 options for my n800 -

1) I got an Intec-branded Nintendo DS case, and sewed some velcro on the top, I have 2 velcro patches on the top of my n800 to match. The bottom is held in by two plastic corners of the case. It's very good, and I trust it

2) While sewing, I put a flap of velcro over the Nokia provided case, so it doesn't slip out.

All that being said, since I have a screen protector, I have been using no case at all, most of the time. I'm always very conscious of my electronics, so I'm not a crush-risk kind of person. If wearing dressier pants (something loose) I can carry it in my front pocket and nobody will notice. At least they don't say anything.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

my N810 stays comfy in the jeans front pockets without the nokia case.
I carry it usually with the nokia case, but quite often I leave that at home and only carry the N810. It stays on every pocket I put it in.
So far no scratches visible. And I put it flat on the tables or in the jacket pockets (sometimes with the keys :( ).

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

I keep it in my pocket, too. My work environment is casual, so I can get away with slightly baggy jeans that allow for plenty of room. However, last week I was at a conference with other IT geeks where I wore a sportcoat with my jeans and I kinda liked having my n800 in my coat pocket.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

Thanks all, good suggestions. It sounds like I'll be able to keep it in my pants pocket most of the time. I'll probably add a screen protector as I do with all my other stuff. For work however, I'm thinking about some sort of portfolio that can hold the N810 along with my notebook (a small Moleskine). Since I take my Moleskine with me everywhere, it would make sense to keep them together. When I go home I'll just drop them both into my laptop backpack and head out.

This should be fun! Thanks again!

PS - just noticed the "Thanks" button in the forums... is there a FAQ on the PC way to use this? Heck, I'd thank everyone for their comments, but I'm guessing that would defeat the purpose...

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

I also use a case logic hard drive case to protect my N800 when it's traveling around with me. It's nice because it holds my headphones, usb cable and OTG adapter also.

The rest of the time it's in my left front pocket with my cellphone.

In my bag, next to the iPhone. I don't wear clothes that have pockets usually.

Do you guys know of any case that would hold the n800 + the Igo Keyboard ?

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

i use the ds light case at BB for my 810. Cost like $5 works well keeps the device padded. I cut a invisible skin/3m protection film for the top and screen. Will probably get anti glare screen shield but love the feel of the 3m paint protector on the face. I think I'll make a template and post it here when I have time.

The case logic hard drive case can hold both. I have done it but prefer not to because it leaves me no spot for headphones and cables and such.

I ended up ordering it, after I found couple of pics in another thread in search...

Thanks!

Not sure if anyone's seen this, but I came across a case from "Boxwave" on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Designio...591654&sr=11-1

I've been using that case for the past few weeks... It's very nice, quality leather with good construction. I personally like the extra pockets for credit/bank cards and IDs because I usually like to just carry my N810 in my pocket and not worry about a wallet.

FWIW - I however, did not like the plastic bit covering the keyboard (and holding the unit in the case) - I found it affected my accuracy in using the hardware keyboard (which I use A LOT). So, I cut off the plastic cover and slapped a strip of industrial strength (hooky side) on the top strip of metal on the back of the N810 (not the battery case) then stuck the N810 directly to the fuzzy fabric lining of the case. Works like a charm!! :D I've very happy with my purchase.

I got the case logic from Amazon, it fits both the n800 / igo keyboard perfectly... might have room for the headset, but doubt I could fit the charger....

how wide is that igo keyboard when folded up?

im trying to get a indication if i could get my freedom keyboard to fit. by the numbers i find online it may be a tight squeeze...

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

heh, glad you liked it :)

im not sure how much wider the N800 is vs the N810, so it may be useless info, but for me to fit the N800 in the upper, outer pocket, i have to twist it a bit after i insert it. thanks to the material and that they have not put any stitching so that the pocket area runs up into the rear shoulder area this goes without a hitch.

This urban holder would be very risky here... too exposed and easy to swipe your expensive device.

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

i left the clear film on my n810, i just ripped the 2 strips off, then rubbed the glue off with a damp clothe - 10mins, u can't even tell w/o close inspection... i was in a bestbuy last night looking for another case, & found out that the motorola Q's case is a perfect fit, & it has the clip to slip on your belt ( thinking of this for the summer when my gear is too light, w/o coat pockets).. on the weekdays it's in my ibm thinkpad bag till i get a chance to sit down & use it, on the weeknds i'm in sweats or jeans, i've been using the default grey sleeve that came with it, in the pocket it goes, with headphones attacted

hgtablet 2008-04-02 13:35

Re: N810: How do you carry yours?

I tried the Motorola Q's case and found it to be just a tad smaller, the n810 fits but it seems that the elastic is being stretched just a little too much and the sides of the n810 are not protected because of this.

But of course, this may be just my impression.

If any of you are real gear heads and are looking for a more portable backpack/travel bag you might be interested in these 2. I can't decide myself, because the last one supports up to 50oz hydration resevoir, and I have a 1 liter Camelbak.
