Pearl or Centro for pairing?

I got my N810 a couple weeks ago and I love it. However, I currently have a Moto Razr that I pair it with and it is painfully slow. I was wondering which device (the Pearl or the Centro) would have better/faster web via bluetooth. Or if there would be a difference at all.
I work for Sprint and the reason I chose these devices is obvious. Size. Not that it would be inconvenient to carry a Treo or Mogul I just don't need another device that big since I have my N810.

Here is my N810

I've heard it's a pain to use BB devices with the tablets, and the Treo I've used before required that I go into a menu and select DUN every time I wanted to use it. Honestly, they both have their disadvantages.

I figured as much.
I have always been a fan of Palms, and I don't like the RIM OS, so I think I'm going to end up with a Centro. Unless I am suggested otherwise.

When you pair yours to your Treo, what is the web speed like?
With my Razr it will load but it is unbearably slow.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

If you're a Sprint employee, you probably have a Phone-As-Modem plan maybe? So then dial-up networking should work natively on the Centro.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

Well I technically work for a company called Connextions. I am a chat agent for their Sprint Customer Care department so really I only have the advantage of the Sero Plan, not the Zero Plan (they are working on giving us the ZERO soon). That means I would have to pay full price for the Phone as Modem feature as of now.

Is the Phone as Modem Feature on a Centro the best solution?

The treo connection was just as fast as the CDMA was on the device. Not super fast, but useable. The thing with the DUN connection option was that if selected, you could not use data on the phone, and it would use battery even if not connected. I don't know if the centro fixed this, but take a look for the menu!

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

On the Centro, the best way to go without paying for Phone as a Modem every month is to buy USB modem, but yes, you do have to enable that every time on the Centro before connecting the n810 and disable it when you're done. On the 755p that I have, there used to be a hack that made it work with the built in dialup networking but I believe that doesn't work anymore after the newest update.

That is interesting that you have the apply the DUN feature before every use. I suppose I would just leave it on because I wouldn't be using the Centro for the web.

Well if you do pay the extra for Phone as a Modem, you don't have to do that, its mainly because its a hack that makes it necessary.

So really I won't have to get a SmartPhone at all if I get the Phone as Modem feature as it is offered to basically all Sprint phones.

usbmodem speed test using Centro on Sprint's network.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

The current (700p, 755p, Centro) bluetooth stacks have DUN enabled by default. No more need to touch the phone to get DUN going.

I have an aging 700p and a N810. On the N810, I simply select my phone on the network connect list and I am on.

HOWEVER -- on my phone, I MUST allow the DUN to time out, or select a different network on the N810, so it drops the BT connection, BEFORE using the phone, or the 700p will hang. YMMV

I would highly recommend the Centro (a new and better 755p) for use with the N810.

My 700p has been effortless with the one exception.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

Hargoth, do you have phone-as-modem support on your plan, and are you getting charged for the tethering?

As far as I know, to do it natively, you need to have Phone as Modem on your plan, or you'll get charged a ton, unless you use the program PDAnet or USB modem to tether without letting Sprint know you're tethering.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

Ya, lucky me my 700p is from work, so they pay for it. However, the new Sprint everything plan does cover DUN what what I have read.

Re: Pearl or Centro for pairing?

Unfortunately no, it does not include phone-as-modem.
