Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
With the N800 OS2008 you can use Gmail via the web.
It should be nice to have Gmail via the N800 Email program. Is this possible? I can’t overcome the message: "Error in socket operation". If using SSL encrypted e-mail, disable SSL and try again. My settings are as below. Your help in this should be much appreciated. Regards, ================== On gmail.com "Settings" "Forwarding & POP", "Enable POP", On N800, "New account". User name, "name@gmail.com" Email Address: "name@gmail.com" Incoming Server "pop.googlemail.com". Outgoing Server "smtp.googlemail.com" "Advanced". Password Authentication "Normal". Security SSL (POP3S). Incoming Email Port 995 Outgoing: SMTP Authentication "Login". User Name "name@gmail.com". Security: SSL. Outgoing Email Port: 465. On the Security tab: all the boxes are unticked. |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Yes it is possible.
Not completely sure about the security tab boxes you left unticked. Don't have my N800 here right now so I can't compare it to my settings. Or try Modest ... it has a "Gmail profile" with the right configuration. |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Why not use imap. I used to use pop3..... but i am currently on imap. Try with imap and see if it works. By the way the email program is absolutely crappy and i think pop3 worked better than imap for me.
You can use the settings for iphone.... they worked for me. They are on the google page. |

Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Hmm...think I haven't used it since the last update so I'm not sure about that.
At least it's not reseting my N800 like the internal client did sometimes when retrieving Gmail Imap... |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
As suggested, I installed Modest.
But still no success. Now I get the message: Unable to connect to pop.googlemail.com. Server name or port number may be incorrect. ---------------------------- Used settings: Incoming Server "pop.googlemail.com". Outgoing Server "smtp.googlemail.com Security SSL (POP3S). Incoming Email Port 995 Outgoing: SMTP Authentication "Login". User Name "name@gmail.com". Security: SSL. Outgoing Email Port: 465. == Your help in this should be much appreciated. Regards, |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Modest is currently broken, as far as I'm concerned it's been broken for a month or so at one level or another. I hope they fix it soon.
EDIT: I should say that for gmail access the only reliable way I have is via the web browser. I have been using Modest for over a month now and it's ability to work and not crash has been spotty at best. At least it's better than the built in client that doesn't work at all. |

Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
hey guys
modest is broken since the last update. a new update is expected in a few days that will fix the gmail problem.(according to the developer something is wrong with the regression, beats me if i know what that is!) personally i like to use pop because i find it faster! but i hate that whenever i send an email on my webmail it has to show up on my n800 as a new message! |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Does Modest allow Gmail pop email access?
After entering the same settings as Green_N above I cannot retrieve or send emails. The Modest client doesn't report any errors. Checking for emails doesn't show any new email (despite sending a test email which it should have picked up) and sending emails just go the outbox and are marked "Fail". I know most members prefer and recommend IMAP but can anyone confirm that pop should work (or indeed that they have it working) ? |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
googlemail is incorrect, as stated above. There is no such thing, it's gmail.

I actually had the correct gmail setting and it still doesn't work. My full setting are as follows: Account TabThe Modest wizard suggests most of these options when you enter a new account for gmail with POP so I'm surprised that

Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008

Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
My username doesn't include '@gmail.com', just the part before @. Have you tried it that way?
|
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Have you enabled imap/pop at the google settings? By default they are off.

Could I just ask if anyone is sucessfully using pop Gmail on Modest? Surely there would be more outcry if it wasn't working . |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Yes, POP3 GoogleMail works fine for me on my N800 (latest version client, downloaded a few days ago). I didn’t think too much about how to configure it. I simply used the Account wizard to create the POP account (Region = UK, Service Provider = Gmail(POP)) under Email/Tools/Accounts/New. As sgosnell suggested, the username does not include the ‘@gmail.com’. Besides this, my settings look practically identical to yours.
The message “Unable to connect to pop.googlemail.com. Server name or port number may be incorrect.” has appeared a couple of times recently but, I guess, this is a server problem as all is OK 10 minutes later. OJ |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
Using pop Gmail on Modest isn't working for me either on N810 diablo, latest update installed. I Have exactly the same problem as Fionn: no error message or whatsoever. Even if I change the POP3 port number to an incorrect one, no error message shows up!
The Gmail account is working on my Windows PC without problems though... By the way, other POP3 accounts I tried do work properly. So as a workaround, I let my gmail being forwarded to a "normal" pop3 account to be able to read my email on my N810. |
Re: Gmail/Googlemail POP3 With the N800 OS2008
FYI:
My gmail is working after all. Probably because I have added "recent:" to my POP3 account its user name. I also read my gmail from my desk-top PC. As a result, all messages were marked as downloaded already before reading them on my Nokia N810. By using "recent:username@gmail.com" on the gmail account on the N810 you can prevent this. See also this explanation from Google. |

When I initially set up my pop gmail account in modest my first action would be to send a test email to myself from the n800. The test email never budged from the outbox despite many attempts :(. Yesterday I opened Modest again and tried sending/receiving (not expecting anything to have changed) and, voila, it both sent my test email and received emails . It first prompted me if I wished to ignore security certificates which I did. I'd never been prompted for that before. I still have an issue though - I can't open email folders :(. Thus I can receive email and see that my inbox contains email but I can't see who it's from or what the subject is and I can't double-click on the folder to open it. In other words I can't get past this: http://i37.tinypic.com/imji85.png The same goes for sent folders, outbox etc. However, when I get an email notification I can click on that and open the full email. Very strange. Any ideas? Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and do a full reflash. Does a full reflash mean I'd have to apply all the SSU updates post re-flash? |
