The Automated Profanity Filter

A poll for the group. Personally, I'm of the opinion that we're (mostly) all adults here and a little profanity here and there isn't something we need to (or should) be protected from, so the automatic profanity blanking should be turned off, and those of us who are particularly offended by it should simply be offered as an individual user setting.

Some may disagree, so I'd like to get a response from the community that (hopefully, if he doesn't feel too strongly about it) Reggie can act on.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

I don't care about profanity and sometimes the filter gets in the way - see the *****X thread.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

As I didn't realise there was one, I don't think it matters. I have always found them useless for any purpose, especially as they attract attention to something that wouldn't be noticed anyway and tend to focus on what is considered profanity in the states so less relevant from my POV.
However, I don't see how it could be implimented as an individual setting without quite a bit of work

Being 15 counts right? Please? :p

No seriously, I swear a lot and in school, Everyone swears. I don't think anyone on here cares unless, fair enough, it's aimed at a single person or a group rather than general swearing.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

I'd just as soon leave it in place. I don't know why this forum has brought out this mother****ing prudish side of me, but I think I've liked not reading all that ****ing profanity ****. And I don't think I'd have gained anything worthwhile by having had the forum be filterless.

Leave it on, we have to protect little kids like Qwerty12.

HTML Code:

<span class="profanity">wankel rotary engine</span>
Edit:
Not to discount the work, but it's not very hard to span-wrap the profanity instead of replacing with *s, and even hardcode the CSS to block it for everyone if desired (saving the work of actually making the switch available.). We all know enough CSS to circumvent it...

BTW, Reggie, thanks for using *** instead of replacing with euphemisms; saves us from people finding clever ways to make it say funny things (classic: Abe Lincoln's buttbuttination) and endlessly posting them. There's a lot less funny things with ***, though I could see *****x becoming a meme here...

It may very well be Reggie's preference. Some people do not like profanity. Turns out my boss is one. Oops. :o

For what it's worth: if you hadn't mentioned you were 15, I never would have guessed it. You conduct yourself as an adult as far as "the public" can see (and that's not a bad thing!). Kudos to you.

No kidding, briand.

Hey qwerty-- can you come to Texas and tutor my 15 year old in being more mature? :D

Really? Thanks :)

I wouldn't have thought so tbh with myself because my posts are rushed and my sentences can be odd sometimes :/

@Texrat

Sure! If you want your son/daughter to learn a range of swear words :p.

Well, maybe you should apply a filter to your communications with him:
Say, boss, I kept that noBounds project under my hat for two years; doncha think a fella oughtta get a asterisk-asterisk-asterisk-asterisking raise for that kind of loyalty?
Of course, I can't take any responsibility for possible outcomes if you do that; it's your *. ;)

He's mentioned it at least once before, and got a similar reaction; it's true indeed. We need more 15-year olds like him around here.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

I like the idea of a per user choice of whether to turn off the filter or not. It's weird I do cuss a bit at home but try to not cuss in public or in the workplace. Instead in public/work I use words like "Frack" (yes I'm a Battlestar nut) or Zut Alor (cussing in french doesn't really sound like cussing at all :P )

work in radio for a bit -- that'll either quickly cure you of the habit, or quickly cure you of working in radio.

I *mostly* agree with you, but as there are many heated debates here and I would hate for them to degrade into a string of profanities as opposed to the name calling we already have.

That sort of thing is only available at the network level, or very very large radio stations. Certainly not available at any station I've worked at (and I've worked in radio at a few top 50 market stations).

Personally, I don't think the filter will change that one way or the other. I participate on a lot of other forums where there are no filters in place, and profanity isn't an issue in any of them.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

Let me rephrase that:

Prophanity is not an issue, SPAM is.

You mean, do I want little ****'s disrupting my ability to read other's postings? No.

I object to the system on a variety of personal and practical levels. It's not something I want or like.

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

I'm normally a freeforall type who doesn't like censorship, but I don't feel the filter has impeded much. It's sometimes a surprise when something I am so used to is replaced by stars. I have never understood what opposition to profanity is all about, since one can simply replace profanity with a literal definition and not be censored and be a lot more offensive in the bargain. But people rarely do that.

Tabletrat, does she ever refer to the UK as quelques arpents de merde, habités par des barbares?

:D

Re: The Automated Profanity Filter

Not going to sift through the thread. Let's not forget the kiddie filters and company firewalls that block profanities. If they're allowed then I don't suppose a few ITT pages would become inaccesable.

You just found one! I got my n800 on my 14th birthday and have loved it. I'm probably one of the few people who owns an n800 in Cleveland. But thats understandable since i've been using Ubuntu since I was 13. ;)
