Web Browser Newbie Questions

Hi!! My first postt to ask about the browser. I am writing this from my tablet, too!

Sometimes, when scrolling eitther with thhe directional pad or the scrollbar arrow, the browser will start scrolling all the way to the end of the page. Can this be prevented?

Also the browser takes up lots of memory. Any advice? 150mb for 4 windows at this moment.

Thanks tto all the Maemo hackers out there. The NIT is an awesome, open internet solution.

:D

I normally just scroll by moving the page itself, never bother with the d-pad or scrollbar.

Well, bear in mind this isn't a desktop computer so it's never going to be as good at handling lots of windows, but one idea might be to use virtual memory (in Control Panel go to Memory and click on the Virtual tab).

For those who don't know, it's where you use the space on a memory card to extend the tablet's RAM. It's not a perfect solution as card memory is slower than real RAM, but a lot of people find it very useful. I think it's also called swap memory or something like that?

This only works on the card you have inside the tablet, so that's the built-in card on the N810 and the internal slot on the N800.

Would it help to tturn off graphics, java, or flassh player? Or, is theere a lynx-type browser that other people use for stripped- down functionality?

Also.... anyone else notice that browser will change tthe link color instead of 'clickking' itt, or it will draw a box around it?? Frustratiing. Would be great to know how to turn off these 'features'.

You can also see from my posts thatt the virtual keyboard will kit keys twice, occasionly. Not sure whyy that happens.

@krisse... Sometimes there are so manyy links on a page, I worry that it will click one instead of grabbing the page. reddit.com for instance

To improve your browsing experience, try to find the lightweight, "mobile" versions of the web pages you visit. For example, I use m.slickdeals.net, instead of the normal page at slickdeals.net.

Re: Web Browser Newbie Questions

first of all, welcome to the tablet community :)

i think the first thing to point out is that the tablet takes some getting used to. just about every issue that you mentioned, i had as well when i first got mine. but i very quickly got adjusted to the way the browser (and the tablet in general) performs. at first, the browser frustrated me a lot with the links highlighting and/or making it appear that they selected themselves. it also frustrated me that i would highlight text when just trying to scroll through. but in just a few days, i adapted to it and now fly through it with no problems. i cant think of a cause to the issues but trust me, you'll be fine. no worries.

in terms of the double tapping, just remember that the touch screen is very sensitive. thats another thing you'll adapt to. it takes some playing to figure out how the screen reacts to your clicking.

give it some time and you'll be fine. trust me. im no veteran and no expert linux user so i know where you're coming from. in time, you may barely touch your computer. i hardly do anymore. with VNC, i remotely connect to it from anywhere. and now that KDE is installed, the tablet's functionality increased ten fold. in fact, im posting this using Konqueror. lol

once again, welcome to our humble community.

Regarding the multiple key hits: This was identified as a bug in the operating system and you can vote for it (to be hopefully corrected) at https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2723 (you need to establish a "Bugzilla Account" in order to vote - a simple registration).

The tablet clicks once per key for every letter 10 times in a row, then it clicks once and two identical letters are produced. Does not sound like double-tapping. When I double-tap, I hear two clicks.

So did you wipe out Maemo and load another distro with KDE, or did you add the KDE environment to the Maemo distro?

alright. nevermind then. that sounds like a true bug (probably the one mentioned above). i was just telling you my experience to see if it related.

nope, didn't remove maemo. just added KDE. i have different tasks that i do in each.

No, you can't turn it off that I know of. Disabling drag would be a pretty bad thing anyway, IMHO. You might be able to change the distance before a click turns into a drag though...

It's not unique to the virtual keyboard. You can't hear two clicks, because the bounce is very quick. Try recalibrating the screen, using the lightest stylus touch possible; sometimes (including for me) that helps, though some people say heavy taps help for them.
But, it does have a backspace key for fixing those, in any case. ;)

Not a problem, as long as you put your finger/stylus down without bouncing and start dragging immediately.

Hello all again. Wanted to follow up with the "double-tapping" issue for documentation-sake. Turns out that my touch-screen interface was going bad, and I just sent the N800 NIT unit back for repairs, too. I have since tried a new unit and I did not have the "double-tapping" issue, like I did before.

In case anyone else researches this subject matter, through searching the forums, here's what happened:
1) Touch-screen started doing "double-tapping" and "repeated clicks" on occasion. This was expecially noticable with the virtual keyboard.
2) Later, Touch-screen started to become suddenly and completely unresponsive, while the other keys still worked. A reboot or a removal of the battery for 15 seconds was required to regain functionality. Problem was happening with increasing frequency.
3) Called Nokia technical support, who diagnosted the problem as a connection issue. Sent unit back for repairs. Unit was 10 months old.

Truth be told, I used this device so often that it was dropped out of my hands or jacket pocket many times. It is very likely the touch-screen connection became loose or broken over time.

Re: Web Browser Newbie Questions

One popular tweek for the browser is to turn off "Fit To Page" which seems to slow things down and works perfectly well without it.

Search the forum for other information on this tweek.

I turned it off and never looked back.

There is no Java.
I built Lynx, but it's awkward/useless on complex graphical websites.
Simple websites work OK in the Firefox browser. So the only point would be browsing via a B/T phone with an expensive data plan - Lynx won't download images, stylesheets or scripts, so you'd save some money.

to stop the runaway scroller, just tap the block inbetween the arrows with the stylus. you can also scroll page by page tapping the space bar.
