Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

I've done the search on the site and on google also but I can figure out whats happening with my n810 and claws. The problem started this morning. I'm able to launch Claws but when I hit Get Mail, the app shuts down by itself.

I've already uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Upon reinstalling, I also had to redo the settings which works fine because I was able to pull all my folder. I restarted the IT and back to square one again. The app just shuts down.

Can anyone help me out please?

File a bug. Give as much details about your setup as you can.

Claws works fine for many people here.

Thanks, went ahead and did that.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

From what I vaguely recall it might be related to some corrupted files. Might as well check your disks (especially if you use ext2.) But jffs2 doesn't need anything so if claws mails is just using that, disregard. :) If you have a backup of your data files this is also worth trying.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Thanks Sarah, I'll try to look into it more. I've been coresponding with someone from bugzilla but I just really don't understand most of the suggestions that I've been getting. My knowledge with this os is very limited. I find myself googling for hours just trying to understand the terms/wording that are given to me.

Its really far off from symbian that I'm so used to.

Honestly I feel really inadequate using this device. For now all I use it for is for browsing.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Are you using IMAP? Are you synchronizing really big folders?

I had the problem when I was trying to download folders with a few thousand messages. If you are doing this, try to go in to the settings and limit the range of messages it brings in, say 2 months or so. You might have to do this really quickly if it automatically checks/synchronizes for you, otherwise it will crash before you can save.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Yes I'm using I map. There aren't that many emails in my folder although some of the emails do have some attachments in them.

I've tried to navigate the settings under configuration but I can't seem where to alter the folder download settings.

Thanks for the patience guys.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Same thing here. I'm a heavy claws user. It worked fine yesterday (and for months) but today it's crashing constantly. Crashes consistently when composing a message, either a new message or a reply. Stays up a little longer if all I'm doing is reading mail.

Is there any way to debug this? Log files? A "claws-crashed" file is created in .claws-mail/tmp but the file contains the single word "foo". Not terribly informative. The claws.log file is empty.

Running OS2007 and version 3.4.0 of Claws Mail. (Freshly updated today to see if it would cure the problem. It did not.)

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

I enabled the external editor (leafpad) and now I can at least type a reply without claws crashing.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

It's not in the application config, it's in the folder properties. Tap and hold on the folder, and scroll the menu way to the bottom. In the properties screen you see the option to check for email, synchronize, and folder processing. Might be one of those.

If it's crashing at other times, try going offline then write your message, that will at least tell you if it's having issues downloading in the background. You may want to set up MH or mbox folders so you at least have a queue to put your messages in.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Thanks, found the settings that you mentioned. I've changed it to 20 days and its still crashes when forming any type of connection.

The app is pretty much stable unless I to send or refresh. I can navigate through the app settings without any problem.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

I deleted the Claws folder and re-synchronized. Seems to have stopped the crashes.

Does it crash when you try to read one particular message? Claws-mail has a known messages size restriction (i.e. bug). I think the biggest message it can handle is about 9MB. Claws can move the message to another folder, but trying to open it causes the crash. I created a folder called "LargeMsgs" to hold them until I can get to my desktop system and read them there.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

I can access all folders without crashing except for the Inbox.

The contents of the other folders are displayed as normal however when I try to open any messages I get the message:

This message can't be displayed.
This is probably due to a network error.

Use "View Log" in the tools menu for more information.

Log seems to try to connect a few times then **IMAP error: FETCH error

I used the tablet's File Manager. I'm running OS2007 on a N800. My Claws folder is at the top level of the internal SD card, and I was able to delete by tapping the little trash can icon on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Claws was not running at the time, of course.

Yep the same thing I tried. Unable to continue, Read-only folder Trash.

eh? Where did you get this information? It's not true.

Maybe it's fixed now, haven't checked. IIRC it is bug 1515. It certainly WAS true because it bit me a couple of times.

Is it marked read-only if you tap the info icon in File Manager?

Tap the "i" in the blue circle to bring up the "Folder details" pop-up. When I do this, the Read-only box is not checked.

I wonder if that's your problem, that the Claws folder got set to read-only somehow....

If the read-only box is checked in the "Folder details" window, can you uncheck it?

Well I would still hold that it's NOT true, as it was only affecting IMAP accounts under certain conditions. Your statement was not specific enough.

Anyway, it's been fixed. See the bug report for details: http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-...ug.cgi?id=1515

Gosh, I'm terribly sorry. I posted what I knew. I'm not a Claws developer, just a stupid user.

Is that sarcasm? To me it is important that info in public forums is accurate, because other people might read it at face value.

Yeah that was the first thing I've tried to check for. Its not marked as read only.

I'll try to delete it via pc.

can you run Claws from xterm like this: 'claws-mail --debug', and post the relevant stuff from the debug output?

pakyooh 2008-05-02 16:51

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

Sorry I forgot to mention that this should have been posted in the Newbie section from the beginning (thanks to Krisse).

I've been trying to figure out how to use xterm since some of the advice I've been getting mentions procedures using it. I have no idea how begin using it.

So far I've typed:

'claws-mail --debug'
claws-mail --debug'
claws-mail
--debug

and all got the response of "not found"

I've if there was a tutorial on how to use xterm but haven't found any instructions.

pakyooh --

if you're in the directory where claws-mail is located, then you'd need to type:

./claws-mail --debug

...otherwise, the claws-mail would need to be in a directory that is on your $PATH

No sarcasm. Just stating facts. I was simply trying to help by posting what I know. Perhaps I took your response the wrong way, but you seemed to be saying, "Sit down and shut up."

I was just trying to help the guy who started this thread and I posted what I knew from my own experience. It won't happen again.

The claws folders are in the internal memory card. How would I execute that?

Sorry again, as I mentioned I'm really new at this.

Re: Claws Crashing, Can anyone help?

ah.

I think you need to have the claws-mail executable (not the data folders, just the executable!!) on some other drive... the removable media is usually flagged as non-executable.
