USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

Pro: With a Nokia stamp on it, $39.95 (something like that); amazon.com $15
cons: it takes 10 - 20 days for shipment, or a notice of unavailable ;)

I ordered 3, http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11397

Let me take a guess, see how soon before it dries up............2 weeks?

Oh well, did not read it carefully, if order more than 3, price dropped to $1.88, so, 3 X $2.40 = $7.20 shipped or 4 X $1.88 = $7.52 shipped.

Just an FYI... If the image that Deal Extreme has posted is the actual product then the sticker on the back of that cable is NOT the same as the one I purchased from Amazon. My actually says NOKIA in bold lettering and has a bunch of lettering from another language that I don't understand. I hope you didn't purchase a "knock-off" and if you did then I hope that it still works just as good as the "real thing".

Hmmm.... Just the thing I need; even if it's a knock-off, they can't have boffed the connector.

I'm looking to make my own battery charging-pack.

(For those interested, that's a 9V battery connector, an 8.2 Ohm resistor, and a 2mm connector tip, as I mentioned here.)

That's a nifty cable, but I will warn you that short length can be a problem. I bought 6 (without that shroud) that look to be the same length, and I wish I'd searched around more first. I need another 10 or 15 centimeters...

EDIT: no "that's what she said" jokes, qwerty!!! :p

For which purpose? To me it looks like:
  • Plug into a USB extension cable
A little flexible section at the end is all you need; the USB cable does the reaching to where you want it.
  • Hack it up and make other chargers
Well, you can add more cable if you need it, since you're soldering anyway. Short is good though, I think.
  • Plug it straight into a port on your computer
What in the world are you thinking????
(All free USB ports on my computer are brought up onto my desk with cables, anyway. Maybe for laptops, this makes more sense to be longer.)

I think I will order me a few of these. Always looking for a whay to charge for cheap from computer. BTW I wonder if this will charge off the USB port on my cd player in car.

Oh man... you got burned by dealextreme.

I agree with qole; if it's already gone, don't unplug it, put a ceramic plate under it and videotape it.

1. My laptop desk works better for me if my phone is on the right side of my laptop when in use. The cord will not reach that far. :(

2. I have gone to an all-usb charging solution in my cars. Since at any given time we may have phones, an N810, Nintendo DS Lites, etc, I use a USB cigarette lighter adapter and a 4-port USB hub to make everyone happy at once. But if my kids need the Nintendo cables, the hub winds up in the back of the car and the Nokia-type cables don't reach as is.

Yeah, I need to make sure I have a zip extender on hand now. Or 2 or 3. *sigh*... what a spider's web of cables I have now. I sure hope newer cars have USB ports throughout...

I bought this cable from dealextreme and unfortunately it came DOA. I can't justify sending it back to them for replacement so I took the lump. YMMV, but I figured I'd chime in that I'd gotten a dead one...

More to the point, why do we care which one is real, as long as it doesn't go smokey-bang (when you're not videotaping)?

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

My concern is coming from past Palm usage and hearing about how some people had fried their devices by using fake, poorly made chargers that weren't properly regulated.

Perhaps I'm being niave - I just thought that things going boom!! while attached to your power jack was potentially very bad.

Benson 2008-05-09 04:21

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

Well, poor regulation is not likely to be a problem; this is powered from USB (+5V), so the more likely problem (WRT power going into the device) will be insufficient voltage, not overvoltage or overcurrent.

You don't need to ship it back to get replacement. Not sure about more expensive stuff but at least for $5-10 item range they ship replacement for free and don't ask to return the item. Got like 3 such 'replacements' from them for various cheap stuff, they never wanted to return item back. There is "RMA & Replacement" link in order list and you can select broken SKU from your order and explain what's wrong. They will just send it again.

does resistance acts as some kind of load and generate heat? No. I am NOT a electronician. That is a guess, not a statement.

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

It does, that; but the point is to limit the current. By increasing the load (vs. connecting the battery-charge circuit with no resistance), it decreases the current, thus decreasing the total power.

The fake may also be wanting a voltage converter to increase the voltage above the 5V from the USB; with lower voltage, you won't blow things up as fast as the correct voltage with no resistor, and you'll actually be able to charge, whereas a 5V connection with a 5 Ohm resistance would give a full charge very slowly or not at all.

The proper thing to do, if you want to know what's up with a charger, is to measure the current-voltage characteristic and compare it to the limits proscribed in the PDFs here. But throwing a DMM on two units can provide a useful comparison.

Jchord, I assume you're measuring resistance with a DMM?

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

I may be wrong since I don't have any of them, but I think the original has a step-up converter (hence the 5 ohm apparent resistance), while the fake is just a piece of cable (hence almost no resistance at all).

I've bought 6 of these and haven't had any trouble, but I hacked one apart because I wanted to use the power plug to make my own charger. Anyway here is a picture of my hacked apart connector.

My dad always remind me, "There is NO free lunch". He is right again. You got what you pay for. Well, since I am here, let me tally how much my N800 really really cost,

N800 $229 Buy.com
extra battery/charger $15
case $10
SDHC 16G $62
SDHC 8G $39
Tekkeon and 2700 mAh battery $25 + $43
GPS bt $59
Windshield mount $15
Shure earbud $75
USB reader $2

so far $574, and now a $2.40 cable, I think I am showing some self discipline for my hobby :D

How much your N800 + outfit really really cost?

Edit: never realize my $230 hobby turns into a little bit under $600, more than double........

Haha, don't feel so bad considering iPod users spend alot more (read "Cult of the iPod" really interesting read). But yeah it does become expensive when you start buying accessories.

At least you can repurpose the SD cards. That's what I do since I have a 16 GB SDHC and a 4 GB SDHC. I took the 2 x 2 GB SDs and use them with my camera or the Nintendo Wii. :D

I got mine from dealextreme a couple of days ago. It works perfectly, even has "nokia" moulded into it. Power plug fits better than my known nokia power adapter.

I bought one off ebay, which is retractable. Standard USB plug on one end, Nokia connector on the other, a spring-loaded coil in the middle with the cable coiled up. Cost <$2 shipped, and I've used it for a long time, no problems at all. I use it in the car, with a USB charger plugged into a cig lighter outlet. Work good, last long time.

The fake cables I bought refuse to charge my N810 and N810W. They work on my N800s and N75 though.

I wonder if your USB port isn't putting out enough current to charge the N810. Does the N810 giving you a charger connected indication when you plug in the fake cable?

Gregg 2008-08-05 14:31

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

I just received three of the CA-100 "knock-offs" from DealExtreme. My n800 charges fine with it. Also, the connectors fit snug and there is no heat given off of the cable. (There shouldn't be since there are no electronic components to dissipate heat and only wimpy current is passing through the wiring).

It is quick possible that DealExtreme had some "quality issues" with a previous supplier, but it now working with a better one.

These cables are a great idea, since they're small and take advantage of the regulated 5V power supply in the typical PC. Being dirt cheap is nice too.

Benson 2008-08-05 17:28

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

A regulated 5V power supply is not what you need to charge an N800; that's why you can wind up with noticeably non-wimpy current flowing, and resultant burning things.

I respectfully disagree. According to usb.org's website, a USB 2.0 port can only supply 500mA of current. This is less current than what the Nokia-furnished AC adapter provides. If you connect something that draws more than 500mA (which is half of one ampere), the PC shows some type of error message and the port power is disabled. The port would then need to be re-enabled in some manner (or PC rebooted).

Since a USB port offers lower current, charging an IT with it is slower than with the AC adapter.

Benson 2008-08-05 20:52

Re: USB charging cable CA100 cable $2.40 shipped

In practice, substantially greater current can be drawn by a non-conforming device, because most PC-class hardware doesn't monitor actual current flow. (If current were actually monitored, these cables would only get 100mA, because, being plain wires, they cannot make additional current requests as the USB standard requires of devices needing more power.) From the specifications, it may be inferred that the charger is used in the 3.5V - 5V range, so it's likely to draw substantially more than the rated 500mA to bring the voltage down out of regulation, in the absence of an overload detection and cutoff.

Additionally, even if a USB source were to act as a 5V regulated source, with a current limit (rather than an overload-shutoff) at 0.5A, that's still not correct for the tablets; the Nokia 2mm charging interface requires a minimum open-circuit voltage of 5.7V, and a minimum corner voltage of 5.54V, at 300mA. It would work, in all probability, but it's not correct.

BTW, I posted a link to the specifications for the Nokia 2mm charging interface earlier; in case you haven't read those, that's what I'm basing my information on.

I have this cable CA-100 and it really works with my N810 (but its slower then usual charger, about 1.5 times). I use notebook USB port. Maybe your usb port have not enough power for charging IT.
