RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

EDIT: Tacked on another enhancement request

http://xenf.net/osso-rss-feed-reader....ned_armel.deb

* https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3142 *
* https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1851 *

This applet truncates headlines instead of wrapping them around. I would show my own screenie, but my hoster is still down. I'll just steal a screenshot from qwerty12.

You'll need to restart after installation.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

I really want this but when I try to install I get the error message:
"Unable to update osso-rss-feed-reader-applet. Incompatible application package."

I'm using OS 2008 on a N800.

I downloaded it, put it on MMC card and do an 'Install from file' in Application Manager. Am I installing it in the correct way?

In Application Manager, first switch to "Red Pill mode", then install the .deb file.

i just installed this app and it works beautifully. i think there may be a problem thought, since i installed the app, every time i check my nokia after an extended period, all of my applets (including my personal menu) dissappears. could this be a bug in the app? i'm trying to narrow down the culprit, right now it's either this app, lcars theme, or enabling the device lock (my next suspect) any reason it could be this one?

Hildon desktop is crashing. I've never had a problem with the rss feed reader applet myself and I don't know why it would crash since I've changed virtually nothing. Certain applets such as large statusbar clock will crash hildon desktop as well.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

No, I didn't have any problem with this app. Do you have Large Statusbar Clock? This app crashes desktop if you left the alarm option activated.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Navi, any chance of sharing your modifications to the header file please?

I don't need a diff, only the mods in the header file will do. I can repack the newer osso-rss-feed-reader-applet_1.5.12-0_armel with a new library I compile. Thanks.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

yeah i do have the large statusbar clock. i'll diable alarms and if that doesn't work, then i'll remove it from now. i also have the advanced backlight applet. does that also have a history of crashing?

Bundyo 2008-05-29 20:00

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

I noticed that it usually crash when the free memory is low.

Navi 2008-05-29 20:05

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Adv. Backlight shouldn't crash hildon desktop. Large Statusbar Clock crashed for me even without alarms.

Please post patches for each of the bugs you've addressed (in the maemo bugtracker), there's more chance that someone will actually look at and apply/close/answer the bug if we, the community, show what we want.

I don't have coding skills. If someone else will do it, fine.

I think this patch needs an upgrade now that Diablo was released. I installed it but the Feed Applet updated again to a 'clean' version.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Works very well thus far, takes up a lot less space.

Regarding the bug reports I don't think users would need to be able to edit such an applet because thats more the KDE way of handling things. I'd say, 2 modes: 1) finger mode 2) stylus mode. The one posted here, is the stylus mode :)

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

btw, how do you revert to original behavior ?

The original osso-rss-feed-reader-applet is not included in any repository as a .deb file, and building it seems difficult (i've got the same problem as here: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2992).

Maybe the original poster could give some indication about how to build ? Thanks.

allnameswereout 2008-07-25 20:16

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

There is a way to create a .deb from an installed .deb while you don't have the .deb but I don't know how anymore. I read http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkgtools.en.html and the previous chapter and while this might help http://thedarkmaster.wordpress.com/2...d-application/ it isn't useful in this particular case.

In theory http://repository.maemo.org/pool/dia...s-feed-reader/ should be enough for you but because there is no .deb maybe they're not able to get it build themselves either??

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Thanks allnames. I could restore an old backup, and recreate the package (like described in your second link). I could also hack the source packages to remove unwanted dependencies. But all of this seems a far too complicated and time consuming. I don't understand why Nokia doesn't just provide the .deb ...

(I could also just overwrite binary files, but its ugly ...)

Was wondering if anyone could tell me why that little strange character appears between the two items...just below where it says "on honoring"? And also...anyway this space saving could also be done to the speed contacts?

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Also, OS2008 feature upgrade is showing up as broken in updates.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Mhm... what a strange coincidence. I've always been annoyed by the space-wasting RSS-applet, but never saw this thread, let alone the fix provided here. So I did my own last weekend. From what I see, it's basically the same changes to the header file.

But: At least on my N800, the *deb installs without switching to red pill mode. Also, it leaves the original applet untouched, so you can easily switch back to the original Nokia code just by selecting the other applet. (You can even have them both side by side on your home screen, but I'm not sure yet if this is a feature ;) ...)

There are still some glitches (like it has the same name, so when you select it from the home-menu, you never know which is which until it shows), but it might be worth trying.

I uploaded it to the garage yesterday mainly to learn how to work with the garage and with SVN (never done that before, very exciting!), and now, only a few hours later, munky261 brings back this thread to show me I'm not the only one who likes the old style... funny.

So, have a look at the poject's homepage (yes, there's a screenshot) or go directly to the download.

I'd really love to hear if it installs cleanly on other people's tablets, too. Mine is so messed up meanwhile that my own experience doesn't count much. :D

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

I installed that before I did this fix, it installed just fine and i rebotted then opened it and it doesnt just show a single line for each item. It iscutting off a second line with the next item rather that showing just one line.

benny1967 2009-02-23 11:02

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

mhm... I'm not sure if I understand you correctly:

Do you mean it doesn't look as in my screenshot (like: there's part of the 2nd line showing, line height is still double, ...)?
Or are you saying that it simply has a line break at the same position as the original Nokia applet, making the second part of the headline invisible and showing too little of the first line?

If it's the latter: Yes, that's how it is ATM. I'll try to have it fill up the whole width with whatever fits there (cutting off right within a word if necessary), but in the end, I'll have to live with headlines that are just cut off. It used to be this way in OS2005-OS2007 and you cannot do much about it if you don't allow a second line, can you?

If there's something wrong with the layout in general (=it doesn't look like my screenshot), maybe its an issue with themes and character size in custom themes. Just guessing, though.

munky261 2009-02-23 11:51

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

benny1967, It is the theme Im using, it has a smaller system font than the original themes. Any way you can fix that...as Id rather use yours, as it doesnt make any updates show as broken.

benny1967 2009-02-23 12:18

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

thank you for letting me know about the issue with themes. i guess that once i fixed line break handling in general (show as much of line #1 as possible, don't show anything at all in line #2), this issue should be gone. - right now i completly rely on line #2 being hidden by the following item which, of course, only works with certain font size.

cant promise when i can play with it again, but i hope it won't be longer than a week.

benny1967 2009-02-23 19:32

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

there's a new version 1.5.39-2 in the downloads section: no more line breaks.

be warned, it might look weird ;)
i now cut lines right in the middle of words. the nokia code tries to find a space for line breaks and does line breaks within words only if absolutely necessary.
i used the second piece of nokias code and replaced the line break with "…". while this doesnt look pretty, there are situations when you miss only the last 2-3 letters of a 10-letter-word - with the prettier "find last space in line" algorithm the whole word would be lost.

also, i found that the way Nokia calculates the maximum line length isn't very reliable. you'll notice lines are not of equal length. well. my knowledge of C and GTK+ ends here for the time being. ;)

I suppose this is different from the built in RSS applet? I won't use the thing cause it sucks battery when scrolling.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

Works great now benny! My only further request, could you make it use the standard size up and down arrow buttons, and there is no refresh button icon.

benny1967 2009-02-23 21:39

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

actually, the button size changed just like that - i didn't want it that way. now that i see it, though, i might even like the small ones better... don't know. i'm thinking of making the space around the buttons just a little bit smaller (they look very lost there as they are now), but that's version 113 then. ;)

oh, and:
the refresh button is there on my N800. just look at the screenshot. theming troubles revisited here, maybe? can you post a screenshot?

Heres the screenshot. I did a reboot right after install. was only wondering about the buttons cause of how my applet is the width of the screen and id just like the bigger buttons so there isnt so much space.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

benny, I had the same problem with the tritanium theme. Spent an hour copying files, editing and conparing gtkrc files and then "regenning" the gtk icon cache & rerunning hildon theme cacher to find the answer was staring me in the face - well, at least in the diff I had made.

Changing the ICON_SIZE define from 40 to 26 causes this problem under the other themes. Also, changing that define offers no realistic improvement as the part of the background image holding the images for that part does not get smaller as the icon size goes down.

The above is not meant as a criticism - your version has given me a reason to actually use it! ;)

Thanks for the applet. :)

Oh! It's changed to 24 even.

./tritanium/40x40/hildon/qgn_toolb_gene_refresh.png
./tritanium/40x40/hildon/qgn_toolb_gene_refresh_pressed.png

^ It exists in 40x40 form (which is the value of the original applet) & in 26x26 form but ICON_SIZE is 24. Maybe 26 will work better than 24 or 40. ;)

Well, I see you listened looking at the SVN log ;)

In fact, the problem is much simpler and still I can't solve it:
I tried the Kobayashi theme and found that even its
26x26/hildon/qgn_toolb_gene_refresh.png
is not black (as th 40x40-version), but exactly the same color as the background! So the button is there, it was just made (pseudo-)transparent. Great!

Probably there'd be a way to not use these nice 3 buttons, but get some replacements that work as 26x26 or even smaller... same as there should be a way to make the background image smaller so we gain maybe 4 or five pixels for the actual content... but I don't know how.

Given my inability to get things really working the way I want... and munky261's wish to keep the original size... I'll do a version 3. big icons, visible in Kobayashi.

Re: RSS Feed Applet - Now shows more!

As per your request on the homepage, I've half-done it anyway...

I've implemented just the option to toggle a possible stylus mode just in the settings dialog (i.e it wont do anything because the applet doesn't know about it):

http://slexy.org/view/s2URAwmdLH

I don't have the time (and probably the knowledge) to finish the applet part but I may be able to sometime.
