Which Internet Tablet to get?

So I want an "Internet Tablet" really to replace my old laptop.. I wanted a laptop just to use away from my desktop, something simple, so I bought a 1994 iBook G3 for somewhere around $300. Worked great, but the motherboard died. I now want something super portable. Obviously, I was looking into Pocket PCs and PDAs until I found these: Internet Tablets. They look perfect for me. I need one with the following:

- I will use this for music and internet.

- I want to watch videos on the internet... not just Youtube, some movies and videos such as ones off of Veoh and such.

- Be able to scroll through a forum with over 30 pictures a page (larger pictures) somewhat lag free... This could be a lot to ask, but it does it pretty well on the iPod Touch.

- The ability to type with my thumbs, somewhat fast... I don't want a gay little stick to hit my brand new thing with. I'm used to small keyboards though, I have the Samsung Double Flip with a QWERTY thats about the size of my thumb.

- Any extras would be a plus.

- Minimal price.

My brother has the Touch, but without Flash, I pretty much hate it. I need something that I can use anywhere for somewhat comfortable browsing...

My price range - $0-$300 MAX $350

I don't want/need the brand new stuff, old stuff will do, but I want to know that it will work.

If it doesn't then I guess I'll be going to either EEE PC which I really don't want to do, or the Touch.

So just say probably the 770 or the 800. I know most of you are going to say the 800, but if the 770 can do most of the things, example just browse a forum with a couple pictures but not 20 that'd be fine, I wouldn't mind. As long as watching videos is decent.

Smaller the price the better!

Thanks Guys!

Why go with a 770? You can't even buy them anymore, so you'd have to buy a used one off ebay or some such.

A new n800 is going from $175 - $250 depending on where, and I spotted an n810 for $379 the other day (the n810 WiMAX is due out so n810s will be dropping soon).

the nseries will handle almost everything you said, especially with a wifi connection. Be aware though, there is no real PIM type software on it by default (Some great apps are available for free) and you will most likely have to update the OS when you get it. I *just* bought an n810 and the OS was three revisions behind giving me a few dependency errors till I flashed in the latest update. It was quick and easy, plus its free unlike the iPhone/iPod Touch.

PIM stands for what?

And I won't be using the Bluetooth w/3G, I'll most likely be using it in my room which is about 10ft higher than the router or in my games room which is about 20 ft away.

Will it lag at all when loading up some pictures? How does music play on the N800, I'll keep it to like 10-20 songs though.

The only reason that I was considering the N770 was because of its price...

modify the about:config files pretty easy really...best thing to do here is just look around...then decide....

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Okay.

So you think that 800 is the way to go? How about for just surfing the web with a couple pictures?

joepagiii 2008-05-24 02:30

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

i use it at night...in bed...better than having a laptop...i peck type anyway so n800 is ok...the n810 has the keyboard gps,and it takes the minisd cards...n800 takes full size

Andy2 2008-05-24 02:33

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Thats what I'll be doing basically, but on a forum about cars, where pictures could pop up.

The N700 is sooo much cheaper... Is it any good for just surfing the web?

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Youve been a lot of help, thanks!

I'll wait for 770 owners to chime in if I can buy it just for the internet and some pictures. For now I'll play with my brother iPod touch.

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

I've had a 770 for a few months now, great little piece. It's ok on the internet forums, not great though. (I belong to 5 car forums and few others) Video for me is pretty much a no go, I haven't played with it too much though it just doesn't seem to handle it that well and it's not what I bought it for. The main purpose I bought it for was to get email and cruise the web every so often and in my car as a touch screen mp3 player. It does this well and for the $70 I payed for it I'm as happy as can be. But I wouldn't buy one for video, I'd go with the N800 as I just bought one of those as well. :)

Where can you find a n800 other than ebay, today, at that price? There is none.

You have to look around, but I think I remember seeing on on buy.com for $219 and didn't Thoughtfix have a post about $200 n800's the other day?

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Being a previous 770 and current n800 owner, I'd go with the n800. It may be a bit more expensive, but IMO, it's worth it. You might have troubles with some video websites, buut the n800 is better suited for them, and multiple pictures.

As for music, if you get an a couple SD cards, you'll be good on storage space. I would also recommend Canola, instead of the built-in media player.

Looks like I'll be going with the N800! Is it fast though on pictures on car forums or any other forums for that matter?

Andy2 2008-05-24 11:10

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Sorry for the double post, but I don't need this device right now.. Do you think I should wait about 2-3 weeks or maybe a bit more then buy an N810? The small keyboard really applies to me.

Andy2 2008-05-24 11:16

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Triple post.. so sorry but theres no edit button! :(

Okay, what if I got an N800 then payed the 14$ a month on my cell phone for unlimited browser, hooked it up to bluetooth, then just used it for internet all the time?

What do you think the battery life will be? For the Nokia obviously, I'm not quite sure about my phone.

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

The N800 is the way to go, if you can find one. I'm not sure how the battery life would be, in general it's pretty good. Cheapo batteries are available, so you can carry extras if you want. And there are other battery-boosting ways of using regular aaa batteries, I guess.

Can you post what car forums you want to visit? I'd be glad to try it out on my n800 and let you know how it works.

www.FerrariChat.com

You'd need to sign in though to see the pictures... can you just try it without pictures?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

Forums work fine without logging in and checking any pictures. You might have some problems if the pictures are huge and embedded (actually on the page, not just a link) But you can easily turn images off if you get slow down.

Buy Ipod touch, I just changed from n800 and I'm never going back to Noika.

Andy2 2008-05-24 22:18

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

I've played with the Touch and really like it but its got no flash which is a big turn off for me.

How did you find the speed difference? Big? Small?

I know pictures load up on the Touch in a matter of seconds compared to on the Nokia I was watching a video of someone on an N810 and it was loading quite slow...

What did you find better on the Touch?

I have two n800s and no ipod. But didn't Adobe announce recently that flash will be licensed for free from now on? If so, we may lose some advantage.

How fast do sites load up vs your normal comp?

ch8xy 2008-05-25 03:14

Re: Which Internet Tablet to get?

I don't know what you mean by normal comp. Sites load up fine. I use my n800 for live tv streaming a lot. All kinds of programs: news, mtv, movies, sports, etc. Quite enjoyable.

Okay thanks.

I just want to know how loading sites compares from iPod to N800
