N810 owners:8G mini SD $34.02 shipped newegg.com

That will bump up my n810 from 4G micro/adapter to a whooping 8G without adapter. Did I order one? Need to ask?
You have to use my link, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220295, kind of difficult to find it from their search, dont know why, running low on supply?

If it hasn't shipped yet, I would recommend canceling the order. I just returned mine last week. Worked for 20 min. then crashed and wasn't able to get it working again. Read the review on newegg. It seems that they have some quality issues. In fact I posted a warning about this last week.

Also for some reason, they bumped the price up another $2!

You are 100% correct. I read your post too and I also irked to find out they jacked the price by $2. I think because Mara ordered it and caused the price hike  Patriot finally responded to the complaint and posted in newegg.com, "please return for an exchange...5 year waranty". I think it is like everything in life, you will have to take a chance if you want to save a couple of bucks, the cheapest I can find mini or micro 8G is $66 shipped. I happened to have also snapped up a $14 4G miniSD, as you have recommended. Again, thanks for the warning. It is always good to have some balance and check.

Re: N810 owners:8G mini SD $34.02 shipped newegg.com

Hey no problem. You are right that this Patriot card is the cheapest 8gb card out there by a long shot. Part of me thinks I should have just taken another chance (as some other reviewers on newegg did) and get a replacement, but I didn't want to have to go through the whole tedious process of returning it again.

One promising thing I worked out tonight though, is that the REALLY slow transfer speeds on the 8gb card were not a failure of the card. It seems that the same is true transferring to the internal card of the 810 (there is another post about this floating around).

At any rate I hope you get a good one! Let me know how it works out.

The slow transfer rate may bother me when playing media. I will keep you all update once I receive the card Tuesday

I posted about transfer rates recently. I found that many SD cards don't get anywhere near their advertised speeds when transferring lots of small files and folders, as in a typical backup. But when I tried moving a single big file, such as a 100MB video, the speeds were right up around the advertised numbers.

Even at that low price I would stay away, the last thing I want is for my memory cards to fail, even if they have a warranty.
Think of it as buying a parachute and backup parachute combination.
Would you go for the low price with a known high failure rate, but a great return warranty?
I'd buy them if I used them like a thumb drive to pass data back and forth, but not as something I'd rely upon.

Points well taken. ALL my stuff, except music and video, are 3 copies everyday. I used my tablet in work, and immediately enterring data, I saved to the int media, then to the ext media, then "shared folder" to my PC. The majority of the card will be for music/video which are copies from my PC. Your point is a good point and should be reminded as often as possible. I also remember a similar warning form an IT collegeau when harddisk FIRST came out, "hard disk provides a false security, always back up"

Yes, but in those days backup meant punch cards:)

Hey Bun,
I just noticed the shared folder on my tablet the other day and have been trying to work out how you use it. Is it a shared folder used for transferring via bluetooth? I don't remember ever setting up a "pairing" with my PC but it already has my computers name attached to it. MMmmm is it picking up on my computer via the wireless?

Re: N810 owners:8G mini SD $34.02 shipped newegg.com

My card should arrive tomorrow.

I'm not sure the Patriot cards are bad in general... I have one 8GB regular size SDHC card that I purchased about a year ago. It has been used in my N800... did go through couple memory card corruptions due to kernel bug... but never failed so that it couldn't be brought back to normal by simple reformat. It is still working fine today.

I do understand that the MiniSDHC cards can be completely different... but based on my past experience with Patriot card I made my decision to try this one out.

Let's see how it turns out.

Yes, it is a shared folder via wifi. It is not a BT, therefore no sharing needed. You use it just like the way your desktop use a shared folder. It usually peeks out after your wifi has been connected for a couple minutes. Sometimes they just disappear and you would have to do something to get it back. It is very convenient for file transfer. and if you have enabled media sharing, there will be a shared media folder too.

It seems that with any kind of memory you often get what you pay for. Many people have had issues with Patriot products.

I have had problems with A-Data cards and PC RAM as well. That's what I get for being cheap, I suppose

I was just looking up when I purchased my Patriot 8GB card from NewEgg and that was in February and considering it gets used a lot, it's done everything without fuss or problem. Maybe I've just been lucky to receive a good one. Also, I've transfered a lot of DVD converted movies over to the Nokia and I've had zero issues with video lag or sound sync with this card when playing them. It's also no slower than my Kingston 4GB card in transfer speed.

Just thought I'd provide a positive experience to all the negative one's on this thread.

110% agree. My dad said, "There is NO free lunch". I guess the more expansive cards presumably have better QA, maybe.

Humbly DISAGREE. Everybody has A limited resource, unless you are Mr. Gates. Your choice is either to put ALL your resource to perform one single task/purpose or spread out evently to do the most out of it. I think it is personal preference rather than "being cheap".

Hey, here is the big finale (hopefully) for my $34.02 8G Patriot miniSD card: It worked like a gem.

I took it out, sticked it in N800 internal slot, cloned the OS, hurriedly stick it out, and this time, sticked it in N810, AND IT BOOTED without FUSS! Including unpacking, opening the plastic container, cloning with Mil's script and bootup in the N810, under 10 minute, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...t=8631&page=35

One big regret about ordering this card though, and I cannot sleep, cannot eat, tearful day and night and upsetting....I thought I got the best deal in town and shared with the iTT community, Mara got it for less, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...815#post185815 thread #30 :(

I can also add my positive experience into this mix... no problems at all with this card. (So far... of course, past performance is no guarantee of future performance...)

Maybe the first batches of this cards at Newegg had issues, but the newer batches are better quality?

You SHOULD buy one. Your post about careful with reliability is not without merit. However, just like anything in life, if you cannot affort to take chance, you backup and backup. Most other stuff, you download from maemo.org any way. Go for it, as I posted on the other thread, to clone it is less than 10 min, provided you already have a ready to clone system. I made this one 2.4 G and planning to play with KDE again, and still have 5.5 G left behind and use NO adapter, it is a miniSD, compare to my already full 4G microSD with adapter!

Great to hear that it worked out for you Bun. You mentioned that you bought you also snagged a Kingston 4gb from buy.com? Well I recieved my 4gb today and I could definatly see a difference in the build quality between the two. The Kingston is clearly a better put together card. I dont know if that means anything with data retention or failure rate, but it just didn't look as flimsy as the Patriot.
Still, a deal is a deal!

Are you going to play with KDE? I am planning to. I partition the 8G into a 2.4 G initfs and should be enough for KDE installation.

Well, I bought the Patriot 8GB mini SDHC card on May 20, and it worked well for almost 3 months. The card is no longer detected in the N810, nor can it be read on my PCs. I've sent a mail to Patriot support to see if I can get a replacement.

I'm not sure how successful that process is going to be, and I've ordered the same card from newegg while I wait.

I can't believe I lost all that data on the card though. I had a bad feeling about it, and wanted write a script to back it up, but could not decide if I wanted to push or pull (start the backup nightly from the server), but I got caught up with other activities instead. Oh well. Now I know.

I had my share of problem yesterday, out of nowhere, the card wont boot any more (I had KDE/Debian/MMC boot on it). I sent the thing back to newegg.com and is waiting for a replacement. BTW, newegg warantee for memory card is one yr. I guess may be the manufacturer is going to treat you better? please post back on your experience. I just shipped my out today. Well, when there is a lot of people say so, it is probably TRUE, I do lost data and programming time too.... :(

If patriot failed you should go back to newegg. Go to their webpage, log in your acct and click on RMA, they will automatically search for your invoice and generate a RMA number. You do have to pay for your own shipping, it was $1.49 for me.

It's funny that the regular SDHC cards go down on price but not the microSDHC or miniSDHC, and don't even talk about CF! :(

I have my cameras with CF, Memory Stick,..N800 of course with SDHC.

I am thinking using micro-miniSDHC adapters and microSDHC cards for my future N810. But I wonder the adapters which are included with 2G or 1G microSD are compatible with microSDHC cards or not. Does anyone know?

It looks like microSDHC more available than mini SDHC.

I had a couple Patriot SDHC cards and had bad luck with them also!

Well, I only have 1 trouble with Patriot, that is the miniSD. The other patriot works fine, so far, almost a yr by now.

I have interchanged with any adapters, except Sandisk, and they all work. 1 G, 2G, SDHC, whatever, I have not paid particular attention to what brand, kingston, patriot whatnots, as long as phyically fit, they work. There is one catch though, the sitting of the card is paramount. You have to jam it in so hard, that you worry they are about to be broken, then it work. I am serious. so far, I have not broken anyone, but if it wont work, I jam it in a little bit, it will work.

Another catch, the lock button may get loose, after awhile and there is noway, I can make it stay, so those adapters are tossed. You can put it in the unlocked position, but it becomes lock when inserted.

Me too, I am looking for some CF. I found one $15 shipped and ordered, http://www.focalprice.com/Elite_Pro_...014B_1105.html.

Oh, I also found ebay selling 2G RS-MMC for under $10 shipped (I hope, ;) ),

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...fsoo%3D2&fgtp=
I may order some.

Yeah, that's the very first memory card that's ever failed me, and I have a drawer full of SD, MS, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, CF, CF2 cards. I don't even recall having any HDDs fail on me either.

I find it strange that a memory card can just fail for no apparent reason. It's not like I've ever taken it out of the N810 before. Once it's in there, it stays in there for good.

I'll wait a day for Patriot to get back to me on the RMA (5 year product warranty), and then I'll try newegg for the RMA. It's only $30, so cost isn't an issue. It's all the lost GPS tracking data (that I wanted to use with geotagging), lots of xournal good sketches that my daughter did, my maemopad+ lists for everything important to organize my life, some voice recordings for meetings that were recorded, etc.

I think I've decided to write a pull-script to backup the N810 from my Linux server at home. I'll post those cron scripts here when they get done.

I'm getting a little confused here.

From the Nokia N810 website, they say:

Quote:

Storage

* Up to 2GB internal memory
* Support for compatible miniSD and microSD memory cards (with extender). Supports cards up to 8GB. (SD cards over 2GB must be SDHC compatible.)
Will a 8 GB Mini SD card like this Kingston from focalprice.com work in the N810? From the Nokia website, I am thinking that cards over 2 GB need to be Mini-SDHC, so this card will not work in a N810.

I haven't seen many offerings for Mini-SDHC cards that are 8 GB and above. I've heard some with issues with extenders and want to avoid those all together.

My question is, what works for the rest of you with 8GB and more?

Nokia said up to 8G (didn't they?) but actually if we have 32G we would use them by now!
Someone in this forum has used 32G SDHC for his N800 already.

Barely less than 1 month of installing the RMA replacement memory, the new memory card has gone bad again. I know it went bad when the N810 was still running, as my music/playlists went missing that were on the removable memory. I know I was listening to some music earlier, and it's strange how the card just disappeared. Re-mounting it didn't work, and finally, rebooting the N810 (several times) didn't seem to help either.

Thank goodness I found out about this bad memory before I tried to do the new SSU... it would have driven me nuts trying to find out what might be wrong!

Yea, I just checked out the pics on the focalprice link, they look very fishy. The number 8 on the card looks doctored (to me) and if you compare it to the pictures showing the cards in the box, they look like they are showing a 1 instead of an 8...

That and the fact that I've never heard of a miniSD card over 2gb that doesn't say SDHC. Hopefully you can get your money back, but Kingston only sells 4gb Class 4 miniSDHC cards that I am aware of. People have used microSDHC cards with miniSD adapters to reach the 8gb threshold, but I've read a lot of complaints recognizing the cards using an adapter.
