Mitter: A Twitter Client

2 Attachment(s)
This is a milestone for me as I figured out how to package a python app (yes laugh).

I can present:
http://i31.tinypic.com/2ekrwhc.png

http://i31.tinypic.com/14uywp0.png
Don't run off! Default interface is the gui in the first screenshot and can be invoked from the menu.

(Thanks to dick-richardson for testing and giving an idea of the desktop file)

It's also worth mentioning that the mitter crew made maemo specific stuff (like an interface) so kudos to them. I'm just a lowly packager :p

If anyone installed my previous deb, I highly recommend that you upgrade to this one as I've sorted out the icons and placed a entry in the application menu.

Tapping the tray icon seems to hang the program but pressing home works fine. (i'm not a python developer or a developer in general so I cannot fix but I think I'm pretty good to get this far :P)

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

dpkg-deb -b dir/ bla.deb

? :)

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Seriously?

Damn, I went and used Gene Cash's pydist_debian script and edited the setup.py and went and repacked the deb afterwards :/

Adding Mitter to my Personal Menu.

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Just so you know, with your original package the tray icon does not freeze the system...

Bundyo 2008-05-27 10:58

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

dpkg-deb -b packages a ready directory structure + DEBIAN subdir with control file and everything you want to put there.

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

It doesn't freeze it in this one, I said it wrong, my bad.

Tapping the system icon looks like it has frozen but pressing home sets the focus.

Hi there! I'm the main developer of Mitter.

Just to let you know that I'm surprised that the interface actually worked on Maemo ;) I mean, we are not using Python-Maemo yet and I was expecting way uglier buttons. Kudos!

Do you mind if I put the deb available on the project page?

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Hi,
Wow, glad to see you here and thanks for a brilliant program :)

Sure, it's your program :D

juliobiason 2008-05-28 09:10

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Oh, and please send the modifications you made. I would like to have them merged in the main repo, so it's easier to find everything.

qwerty12 2008-05-28 09:13

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

I didn't make any modifications to the actual program at all, I'm not a developer.

Although, what I did do is that I made a desktop file so it shows up in the application menu of maemo and used your icon for the menu entry.

That's a good modification! ;) I got the "modified" in the name and thought you made some changes to make it fit better in Maemo.

Can you send me your name, so I can put it on the credits/THANKS?

qwerty12 2008-05-28 09:37

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Hehe, my name is Faheem Pervez (anyone who goes on #maemo will know anyway :)

(if you do add my name, i'd prefer it on the thanks, IMO, just making a desktop file doesn't make me eligible for the credits :))

It's a script I use to repack deb files, it adds modified to the end of the package.

The desktop file, is in the /usr/share/applications/hildon/ in the deb file and the icon is in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/

:)

BTW: You may want to edit the control file to change the package maintainer to you if you upload it on your site.:)

No way. I mean, when I started Mitter, the plan was write it to Maemo, but I never actually got there. You basically did what I was planning since the very beginning of this ;) But I'll respect your wishes and just add in the THANKS file :D

Ok, now I have to admit: I'm a complete noob in creating packages. Will install fail if someone downloads it form the project page?

No, it will install fine. I'm just saying, if you wish to. Atm, the package has my name in it, if you want, you can change it to your name, but it makes no difference to the package who's name it is :)

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Any chance to get latest release for OS2008 ?

rkopper 2008-06-15 18:24

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

See the first page, you should be able to find a packaged deb there. Double tap on it within file manager to install or when the dialog comes up to save the file, tell it to open.. :)

maillaxa 2008-06-15 20:51

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

No it is not the latest release. Latest is 0.3

dick-richardson 2008-06-15 21:14

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

does .3 support direct messages?

maillaxa 2008-06-16 22:30

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

dunno ;) I hope that latest release will fix the problem of freeze I have with current packaged revision.

Sorry about that.. I didn't look at the fact that you are probably familiar with how to install things... I figured you may have missed the early part of the thread. :o

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

No problem :)

qwerty12 2008-06-29 05:45

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

0.3 package added. It now uses simplejson, good luck finding it for maemo ;). (If someone else can't do it, I'll package it up later)

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Do it. It seems like the current version won't work in Diablo. I'm holding off installing until I see a success story.

qwerty12 2008-06-29 06:31

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

It's already on here, I found it somewhere actually.

Package can't be installed here :(

0.3.0 Works for me in diablo and I don't even have a use for this wonderful program.

Where did you fetch the json python dependencies ?

geneven 2008-06-29 13:01

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

When I try to install, it says it is missing simpljson stuff.

maillaxa 2008-06-29 13:10

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Found the solution. You must use the dpkg -i command to instrall this package. Using the application manager is likely to fail with problem of dependencies...

I am now enjoying latest mitter onto my n810 and even better, it works now. Phew ...

Thank you qwerty12

qwerty12 2008-06-29 13:31

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Cool, interesting, I just installed json from : http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20740 and installing with app manager worked.

maillaxa 2008-06-29 14:08

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Weird, I just installed json and dpkg -i mitter and it worked like a charm. I also tried through app manager and it failed.

I will try your solution.

Maybe you should update the first post to tell the new users how to install latest vcersion on Diablo ?

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Is there any reason why the only Mitter icon, even after a icon refresh is still smaller than the rest?

maillaxa 2008-06-30 10:22

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Dunno. Is that really important ? :)

geneven 2008-06-30 11:56

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

When I tried the dpkg -i merhod, having installed json in red pill mode, I got

Package python-simplejson is not installed.
dpkg: error processing mitter (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:

which is basically the same as I got when trying to use app manager. But when I used qwerty's link to install simpljson, app manager worked.

So Mitter works fine now, thanks.

not important, but I'm almost OCD-like when it comes down to my app list.

:) Maybe you should ask the developper why it is so with the maemo port ?

This one is my fault, I'm not a gfx designer so I just took the only mitter logo present and used that for the menu icon.

maillaxa 2008-07-01 06:11

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Boooooh ! :)

Kidding, the principal is to have mitter right on our tablets. As for the icon, if anybody is intrested in making a cool looking one, we could ship it right into the package.

gerbick 2008-07-01 15:57

Re: Mitter: A Twitter Client

Tell me the format and sizing(s)... I could do that.
