My wife stole my tablet!
The title says it all.
She has been using my N800 for the past few days, and has said things like: 1. "I love your tablet" 2. "What else can this thing do?" 3. "Don't you need to upgrade soon? (wink wink)" She is at home, recovering from recent knee surgery, and finds climbing stairs difficult. Since our desktop computers are in the basement, I thought I would be chivalrous, and offer her my tablet while she is at home. Yesterday, I received about 3 calls at work from her - for tablet support. She wanted to know how to reconnect to the internet, where the charger was, how to close multiple instances of MicroB that were open, keyboard questions, etc. Her embrace of the product, and the ease with which she has learned to use it for its *intended* purpose, has reinformced in my mind that Nokia has hit the nail squarely on the head with this combination of hardware and software. It looks as though I will not have to prepare much of a case to upgrade to the latest-and-greatest tablet in the future. I am pretty certain that my N800 will find a good home in my wife's hands. |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I love it when you've got an excuse like that to upgrade your toy :D
|
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Must be nice my wife would want the upgrade and make me keep the old. Atleast that is what happens when I traded my Truck for her New Car.

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I'd take either situation and be happy. At least then I'd have a co-conspirator in my technolust. As it is, it seems any time I pick my IT up in her presence, the immediate response is, "Haven't you played with that enough already?"

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Thanks for the responses. I'm secretly loving it. It's practically a carte blanche to upgrade at some point. At one point, she hated my tablet, as I was spending so much time on it. I had to go into rehab, and now look at the situation - it's better than ever.

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
:D
My girlfriend (with whom I live) states the same. She even goes as far as lying stating that the first thing I do in the morning is using the tablet! That's true...but only to turn off the alarm clock!!! I swear ! |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
My wife is more like "Oh, geez, not the stupid tablets again!"
 |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I'm in the habit of walking around the house or do the dishes with the tablet in my back pocket. This has induced my wife to slap my *** more often than she otherwise would, in the hopes that she'll bust it.

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I'm secretly laughing at all this. :p

I remember an interview with a famous game developer called Richard Garriott where he was asked which games he played at home, and his response was something like "You think I play computer games at HOME?". |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I must be a freak...
I'm the one who wanted the tablet (N810). My husband's the one who got gadgetlust after seeing mine. We bought him one recently with our "Economic Stimulus" check. It's great when geeks marry. :D |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Well, my wife's a geek, but it manifests in ways that are odd even for geeks.

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
As I aluded to earlier, I had to go into tablet rehab. The offense.... my eyes glued to my tablet while my wife was conversing with me. My 'oh really' and 'yes dear' and 'ahh man' interjections continued after she stopped talking - OK, well after she stopped talking!!

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I opted for another way to get my wife to use the N800, I bought for her (for me to experiment with in reality).
On the long trip to Maine, I downloaded some Childrens videos and nursery rhymes for our daughter from Youtube. This kept her company very well on the long road trips. Now my wife is taken to the N800 - since it enables her to keep the child quite and busy with video and childrens songs when she wants a bit of peace for herself. As a result she has learned how to get online at wifi spots, check out Youtube (thanks to Canola) and also rip childrens CD's and DVD'd to the IT firnedly format (she is very tech averse in general). So much so, that I have entrusted my modest video ripping functions to her now. And I get to to use my N810 as a regular device and experiment on bleeding edge or new software on her N800 :-) |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
lol, my sis is sooo technological impaired, yet she is just obsessed with mahjong and can play it for hours. She went to college right after i got it and whenever my family and i would go to pick her up, i would let her use my tablet for the 6-hr trip back. At one point i would start bringing an extra stylus so that i could play too. We would finish mahjong games in like a minute. I swear the tablet must have a nicotine gas dispenser because i'm hooked.

My BF bought a sidekick and regrets it because tmobile has terrible reception. But he's not keen on a 2 device solution - maybe someday if and when there's an integrated cell modem (sigh) or wimax actually works :)

That is not a very nice thing to say about your wife, and women in general. This being said, my experience has also proven that the N800 is quite usable for people not very keen on technology. Let me count: -my 11 years old son -my sister -my mother (who needs help for basic maintenance of her PC) -a friend of mine and her mother -a friend's wife and father (just to show that there are technology-impaired men... ;) ) Those are people who only use a computer for basic tasks (word processing and a bit of web surfing). The least able person is my mother (unfortunately) and I should say that she is sometimes a bit lost on the N800 (but less than on her PC). There, the huge advantage is that the N800 does not need regular maintenance. We use video chat regularly, so that she can see her grandchildren. We tried to use skype at first, but her PC kept forgetting about the camera, and she was not able to reconfigure it. After less than two months, skype stopped working alltogether, and I can't maintain her PC, because I live 1000Km away. The N800 has proven to be a much more stable device... |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
My wife uses an 8Gb iPod Touch so I can have my N800 all for myself.
Except when we're out home and I use my cell to connect to the internet that's when the fight begins I've to do some research about using my N800 as an ad-hoc access point in order to share our mobile connection, that should solve the issue. |

My wife doesn't usually take up new things quickly in the tech area, so I was both impressed by her, and the tablet. <getting out of trouble> No comments were made about women in general. As we can see by the members of this forum, there are many techno savvy members of the opposite gender. </getting out of trouble> :D |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
To avoid future trouble ;) I think it's best to talk about techies and non-techies. So we're all agreed that the tablets do a good job of attracting non-techies?
Incidentally, in case anyone missed it, I got some rather surprising demographics for who was watching the videos on the Internet Tablet School: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20164 For example the 55-65 age group was double the size of the 18-25 age group. |

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I wonder if it's not so much the tablet itself as the size?
It's just somehow more casual to hold a book-sized object, rather than sitting in front of a large computer. And because the tablet screen is much larger than on any phone it's also much easier to read sites. |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Don't sweat it EIPI. You didn't say anything bad. Some posters here are just... touchy.

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
I remember posting here that I was buying a Chumby. It is now called "The Bedside Buddy MK2".* Now there are Youtube, Gmail and BBC News widgets available for it, my wife has wholeheartedly embraced it, and it is both late night info fix and morning alarm clock. It was just in the nick of time though as Erin** was eyeing up my N800 suspiciously after I let my kids play Numpty Physics on it (for 2 hours straight!).
* No I am NOT going to tell you what Bedside Buddy MK I was, use your imagination. ** as in "Erin Doors". |

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
My wife actually ended up getting an n810 first - the day that it arrived, I managed to steal a couple moments with it and ordered my n800 that same day (the keyboard wasn't worth the $200 extra - and I could care less about GPS). Although I times, I am still envious of her screen and wonder if I could have learned to type with my large fingers on that little keyboard. *shrug*
|
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
heh, they keyboard may not be worth the extra money, but what about the screen? ;)
meh, i would rather see a N800 with its 2 full size SDHC slots and the N810 screen, then a N810... |

Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Ahh, the reflectivity. Point taken.
I don't normally use portable devices in direct sunlight but obviously some people do. |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
you dont even need direct sunlight, just that the primary light source is the sun.
i have been inside but in a sun lit room and had to turn up the backlight to have any chance of reading the screen on my N800... |

I honestly don't notice that much difference between the tablet screens, but maybe it's just because I'm not usually in a room without some form of artificial lighting. |
Re: My wife stole my tablet!
Just curious, you wife didn't steal my tablet too?
Sorry, I just had to ask? |
