Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I left the windows open in the Jeep for 5 minutes. I went into Burger Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan, to oder some lunch. I could see my jeep from the resturant, but
I guess they must have done it exaclty when I was ordering my food and not watching. If anyone in Michigan runs across a sale on a used 810, please let me know I have my WLAN number. Can I report it to Nokia? or maemo? Oh well, I am deeply saddened by my stupidity. I did not notice it immediately and thought maybe I misplaced it, but I have desparately searched the entire house and its not here. Last I remember seeing it was in my cup holder in my jeep. This will bring some of my development efforts to a HALT! I am praying its lying around the house somewhere still, but I have looked everywhere and I can't find it. If I have to replace it I hope the n900 is coming out soon! |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
My heart is with you, PB. I know exactly how it felt. I cracked by Toshiba e740 (a winCE with wifi when people dont even know what is wifi) screen, when I turned around to fetch something. The screen cracked between my shirt pocket and the steering wheel. I felt like a pet was found dead. Hope you find it somewhere in the house,
BTW, I think you should report to the police and have it listed as a stolen/lost property and, maybe, claim catastrophic thief lost on next year tax return. bun |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Hopefully u had a lock code on the device so that the thief can't access the full potential of the tablet.
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
There should be a way to track the IP of these devices so that if they are stolen, we can see if they ever pop up online. I always thought this about iPods as well. Since they have unique IDs, it would not be difficult to report a unit as stolen and prevent it from being used for many things -- and perhaps report where it is being used.

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Definitely report it stolen to the police and definitely DO NOT go to pawnshops and look for it/warn them about it!!! Sounds counterintuitive But I have a friend who is a pawnbroker and here's how he explained it to me-
In the cops vs. crooks game of stolen merchandise, the pawnbroker plays the part of the goat tied to the tree. Pawnbrokers purchase goods, the serial numbers of those goods are run through a police database. If the SN matches, the goods are confiscated and returned to their rightful owner. If that happens the pawnbroker is out the money they spent on said goods. If you go around to all of the pawnshops and warn them about your stolen 'whatever' those brokers will not buy it when it walks in the door and you won't get it back ever! You stand the best chance of retrieving your tablet if the police know what's up and the pawnbroker is ignorant. Go look for it. But if the pawnbroker asks why, just tell him you're shopping for one. By all means though, check classifieds, Craig's List, eBay, etc... You could get lucky. If you find it and the SN matches, having a theft report on file will allow you to call the police and have a uniformed officer with you when you confront the thief. good luck, kernelpanic Quote:

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
With the prevalence of NAT type routers giving access points, most portable devices are pretty opaque from the internet. Unless, there's a phone home service..
Anyway, PenguinBait, did you leave any accounts in the device that the thief might be able to use without knowing the password (maybe email acct or social sites that you save the passwd on the device)? Maybe you can check the login times (start taking notes) to see whether the thief is actively using the device without resetting it. If so, that may be used as a vector of attack.. maybe sending yourself a trojan into one of these accounts hoping the thief would execute the binary... which would in turn take his picture thru the webcam, capture a few pertinent system info (ifconfig, some logs and whatnot) and send the parcel back to your new email account (this will show his smtp trails as well.. hopefully). If Nokia cares, maybe giving them the serial number may help. In case the device shows up for service in the future. Getting in touch with local wifi hotspot providers (with your police report as supporting document) may be worth a try, as they have the technical means to detect the item via the mac address if the thief plays with the device in a nearby wifi hotspot. Calling nearby pawnshops maybe? If they don't have it, maybe leave a request for them to contact you if they have any n810 for sale in the future.. That's all I can think of for now. I really hope you get it back, man. |

More than likely the thief has no clue about the potential of the tablet locked or otherwise... The shame is they pro'ly saw it as a GPS unit and after realizing it's not a new Magellan, TomTom, or Garmin, will not be able to quickly unload it and it may never be heard from again. |

I was wondering if there would be a way to give it to maemo and be notified of IP address of user trying to upate flash in the future? It seems like it would show up eventually? Oh well, how do you say "C'est la vie" Its times like this the serenity prayer fits nicely God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. |

I wonder if the maemo application store can be used somehow to detect\interact with your specific tablet... |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Is there a Penguinbait donation place?
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I second.

Look at the bottom. That sucks, PB. I'm sure Nokia will chip in for the N900, though... |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Awwww Man! That truly stinks! My heart goes out to you... :(
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Awww That SUCKS! I'm sorry PB
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
i guess its a reason why one keep ones IT on ones body at all times while out and about...
and yes, those thiefs can be highly resourceful and fast when they first decide to steal something... |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Hey thanks guys, I really really appreciate the support. If you feel like donating for some projects of mine you use, I am all for it. But if you want to donate to me to replace my 810, because of my stupidity, you should keep your money, as many more people are deserving of your help.
If anyone has an extra 810 they arent using feel free to donate that ;) |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Do you have homeowners or renters insurance? Your policy might cover it. My coworker had his laptop stolen recently and his renters policy got him a new one that cost the same as his old one originally did--it made for a pretty nice upgrade, given his computer was 4 years old.

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
it was stolen from a car so i dont think a insurance like that covers it. but then im not familiar with usa insurance policies...
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Home Owner's might, since your car is an extension of your home (in the US, atleast)?
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
in us homeowners/renters/condo policy would cover theft from a vehicle - subject to your deductible (i sell insurance- i should know) but making a claim might increase your premium over 3 years....unless you have a very low deductible- it might not be in your financial interest to make a claim if the only loss is the n810- talk to your agent tomorrow am and take his/her advise- that's what we get paid for and if they dont know the answer or wont help get a new agent and/or policy at renewal.

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
From my perspective, regardless of your contribution to any project, your spirit is a major contribution to the lifeblood of this place, and we can't spare you. So, if you accept something easy, you can expect a (tiny) sum from me.
Edit: done. |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
In my experience (having things stolen out of my car including a load of rare CDs), renter's / homeowner's will not cover it unless it was physically and permanently attached to the vehicle (ie the radio). Anything transportable does not fall under the policy and is usually excluded in a clause.
This particular oversight made me get a really cheap ($50/yr for 10 grand) policy to cover all the stuff I needed to transport to and from work at the time (phone, PDA, laptop, clothes, etc). Not saying PB's particular policy or company doesn't cover it, but that was my experience when my vehicle was broken into. |
Penguinbaits 810 Stolen - SUGGESTION
EDIT... Events have overtaken this suggestion. PB has secured a replacement. So don't just jump to the donate site for this reason. I believe he will happily accept donations specifically for his work though.
Nevertheless, the response shows what a great user community this is - thanks to all who donated. Ok, here is my suggestion. If 40 of us would donate $10 each, PB would be able to get a replacement. He has done a great deal for this community and we can say thanks in this way. I'm sure many would be able to donate more but by limiting it to $10 each, no one really gets the glory. This is community support as it should be. When we get to $400 we'll call it a day. Here is how I suggest we do it. Go to PB's donation site as follows: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/we...010bfb00cf3c64 and donate $10. Then return to this thread and add $10 to the previous total given and post the new total. Also add the donation link to make it easy for the next one who wants to donate. A couple of points I think I should mention. There will certainly be others who are perhaps deserving and wonder why they were not 'chosen'. Please do not feel dismissed, be glad that we are able to do this for one person. Your day may come in a completely different way. Also, PB, you say that there are others more deserving. This may well be true but grace is not depenent upon the worthiness of the recipient. My only concern is that this thread could get lost and be missed by those who might want to contribute. Anyone have any suggestions on this? The total is $10 (if you have already donated for this reason, just add to the total your donation amount and repost) And thanks to all who contribute!!! |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Okay, total is now $20 :)
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I'm not adding to a donation list. When we hear about PB taking a Carribean cruise AND buying an N810, we'll know to stop donating.

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
Total is now 40$.
Come on! Think if it happened to you! |
Penguinbait maybe you can do the following
Penguinbait, if your tablet automatically connects to a sip server or to googletalk when on the net, you could find out where it is.
For example, my tablet automatically connects to sipphone.com (and google talk too). I got a gizmo account ages ago and simply use the built-in sip client now. When I log to: https://my.sipphone.com/mysip/app?cl...ipRegistration from anywhere on the net, sipphone will report back the i.p. of the tablet. This would be sufficient for the local police. |

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I was very saddened and upset when I read about your loss earlier today Penguinbait.
Having just installed the awesome KDE deb installer for the first time last night, and used your SD cloning package, I donated $10 for now as your work deserves more than that. Thank you so much for what you have given us. |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I've just donated, too... I agree with everything Dfinch said. KDE alone is worth more than this anyway. :)
|
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
I make the total $60
Thanks Irdn & OSEmuTech |

I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am for your donations. Its a humbling experience and again my intent was not to come out here and beg for money or for a tablet. I think the best thing to come from my tablet being taken is the software lojack idea of KP. OK so here is the deal, Lets just say a person who wishes to remain anonymous has pledged to kindly donate to me an extra tablet that they have. I have since retruned all the donations I recieved since yesterday. Please only donate to me for my projects :) Thanks again for the overwhelming support! |
Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
good to hear you got a new tablet coming to you.

Re: Penguinbaits 810 Stolen
indeed. ...and, good to know the "community" here is willing/able to help out other members in situations such as this...
