Erminig no longer being updated
I'm not sure this is the place to post this or not, but here it goes.
(I apologize if this information should not be made public.) Last week I wrote the developer of Erminig (David Hautbois) to inform him of a reproducible bug. Basically, when you "Delete Only This Instance" of a repeating event in Google Calendar, that event does not get deleted in gpe-calendar. I emailed him the steps showing how to duplicate this behavior. Here's the response I got: Quote:

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
:( This is not a good news...
I really liked it and found it very useful oh well...maybe I should really restart doing Python code and take a look at Erminig... |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I got the same message in response to a query I had sent him quite a while ago. if you're seeing this, best of luck David & thanks for all your work.

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I was working with David on a problem with re-occurring event and just received the same message.
I appreciate all he did with this app. I hope somebody can continue the work. I do not have the skills needed. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I may consider picking up erminig to continue the work, but before I have to check how well it would fit in my schedule...

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
OK, I exchanged a few mail with David Hautbois, and it's OK for him if I take over the maintenance and developement of Erminig.
I will open in the next few days a garage.maemo.org project and import everything there. I will need a few days to read the code, but afterwards we can start fixing bugs (if any) and adding new features... (edited for spelling) |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
Thank you lorelai, this app is easily the most useful on the tablet for many people.
|
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
Hmm, this is good news. I would like to request the re-occurring event problem, that "rone" mentioned in a previous message but on the list of bugs to tackle. I suffer from the same problem and as a result, ermining is useless to me. So, if that bug was squashed, I might be able to use it again.

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
That really is good news, thank you David for the work he's done so far, and to lorelei for taking it on from here.

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I would like to see some of this functionality rolled directly into GPE. Is that possible?

I take the opportunity to announce that a garage project has been started: http://erminig.garage.maemo.org. The project is still empty: I will put there the latest version released by David, and his documentation hopefully by the end of the weekend. I invite everyone who has bug reports to file them into the bug tracker of the project. Or if you prefer you can also write about them here and I will file them myself. I spent the last few days setting up the development environment and I'm finally almost all set to start working on Erminig. The first task (after reading the code and understanding the logic behind it) will be to fix the problem where erminig will not start if there's no active Internet connection and make Erminig report some more error conditions to the user (especially in the case of a wrong password for Google Calendar, which is silently ignored Edit: not true...but should be a little bit more visible with a dialog box IMHO) Once these two things are fixed, I will tackle the more challenging tasks (there was a report of recurring events not synchronized or something like that....) |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
Yes I realized this is a whole different developer and project... just dreaming. I think that would be a massive advantage for GPE to sync to online services - possibly via plugins.
In the meantime, I'm glad someone is continuing with erminig, it's desperately needed. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I think its great someone is picking up this project. Need to look at adding some features down the road, like contacts sync, too.
I found GCalDaemon which would be a wonderful port and possibly replace ermining as a more app neutral sync solution if someone would pick up the project as I cannot code to save my ... unless it light php or bash scripting.. lol. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
OK, apparently the startup problem occurs only in scratchbox: everything is fine on the device, so this is not an issue anymore...
|
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I have seen the startup problem with the latest version that was released. Maybe it was fixed in the code but never released.

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
In response to working on the issue with re-occurring events. To provide a small amount of further information, the following is from my initial note to the original author on his site:
"We have a lot of events that are re-occurring on a weekly basis and these are not sync-ing properly. For example I have an event that happens every Monday until a future date. This event is showing up on my gpe-calendar on Tuesday." Another example taken from the author's site: Copied without permission from original poster - rone... "One example is that I created an event in Google calender that started on March 17 2008 7pm and ran for every 3rd Monday with no end date. It came down to my IT as starting at 2 pm on march 17th and 1pm on each Monday there after. I then changed it to weekly on Google and the update changed it to Tuesdays at 7 pm on my IT. I changed it back to every 3rd Monday on Google and after the update it went back to 2pm on the first Monday and 1 pm on every Monday there after. I am using Chicago as my home city with DST on." I can provide the cal from Google if it would help. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I might be missing something here. But I used to use Erminig. I had loaded gpe-calendar on my N810. One day I was looking at it and thought 'I wonder if I could just point it to my Google Calendar'
Here's what I did. First you'll need the public or private URL of your Google calendar. Make sure its the iCal one. Next, in gpe-calendar click on Click on Tools->Calendar New. Title and all is self explanitory. Then click on 'Type' and click on 'Subscribe' This will then give you the URL, password, etc in there. For me I just wanted a one way sync from Google to my N810 and this works perfectly. I see there is also an option to create a publish calendar as well. So I'd imagine that works too. Maybe I'm missing something obvious that others need. And not to be dismissive of this project. But once I found these options in the gpe-calendar I haven't had a need for anything else external. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I think its the two way sync that makes erminig so great. I carry my n810 everywhere and so when I get a new to-do or calendar thing I can enter it right away and syncing with google puts everything across my Desktop and mobile phone :)

Erminig did a much better job with deleted events. It's still not perfect, but I use it in one-way mode since it does a "better" job than the subscribe function built into gpe-calendar. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
Good point. This does work, but is one-way, or at least as far as I can tell. I tested this sometime back, but hadn't tried since a re-flash so i thought what-the-hell and gave it a go.
Indeed, the "subsrcibe" feature works (but I used the private since my 'public' calendar isn't 'published'. Then the 'Publish' feature in GPE did not work at least not to that url....more tinkering required For now, I prefer Erminig because I want the two-way sync. I do sometimes make appointments on my IT and snyc up later when I'm connected to the net. Kudos to the author, David Hautbois for paving the way, and to those who have picked it up and put it in the garage. Thanks. |
Re: Erminig no longer being updated
Gotcha. Well, I just wanted to post just in case. I know sometimes I've missed the obvious before and it wasn't until someone spoke up and said something! Anyway, I was just putting in my .02 but I see why erminig is needed. And even though I don't use it, I'm glad to see someone else has picked it up to keep it going. I wish a lot of projects where like that :)

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I guess I'll have to revisit this, because the last few times I've tried erminig hasn't been able to add an entry that to google that I entered on my tablet. Just haven't had the time to look into the problem yet. Now that you guys are reporting that it works for you, it must be a problem on my end, so at least I know where to start. tx

Re: Erminig no longer being updated
I've been a user of erminig for several months now and have found it very useful. Recently I tried adding a new calendar on my N810, but the application unexpectedly closed. I have been unable to load the program from my application list. I have read they you can load erminig in xterm, but I don't know xterm language. Can anyone help? Sorry if this is too newbie of a question.
Thanks, bmy |

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...hlight=erminig ...simply delete the erminig config file in home/user and it will work, or at least it did for me. BTW, when it wouldn't load, I used xterm to run it to see the logfile, and posted the results, which is apparently how he knew what to suggest. Also FYI, I just tested Erminig (0.2.9-1)again and can confirm, the two-way sync works perfectly for me. Of course I don't have any recurring events...;) |
