Linus is talking to me?
This MUST have been discussed before, but I can't find anything about it.
I have just re-flashed OS2008 on my N800 and now I get a spoken message from Linus Torvalds as part of the start-up sequence: 'My name is Linus Torvalds and I pronounce Linux as Linux' I also just cloned the install to an SD card using Penguinbait's install-tool and when I boot from the SD card I don't get this message, I only get when I boot from flash. It is kind of spooky. |
Re: Linus is talking to me?
I have never encountered that... never heard of it, either.

Have you installed anything since reflashing? If so, what? |
Re: Linus is talking to me?
:)
Happens to me too. I was certain that it was related to the SD clone since it started after that. Funny that it happens when I boot to the normal flash. I've heard that recording many times elsewhere but only recently on the NIT. |

I don't have much installed on my N800 as I was just starting over again: RX-34_2008SE_2.2007.51-3_PRCOMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin becomeroot openssh then I installed Penguinbait's install-tool (several times because my SD card was acting up). Maybe Penguinbait laid a little easter egg? But I think I heard this before I tried cloning to SD. |
Re: Linus is talking to me?
When you install using my install-tools package
It adds my favorite wav If you boot to flash, it will fsck all available ext2/ext3 partitions on all available SD cards and play wav when complete. The wav that plays Linus, pronouncing linux. Additionally you can see the fsck output in /tmp/fsck.txt (might be /tmp/fsck.tmp My memory sucks) The wav is located in /root/.linus This was so I did not have to manually run fsck each time I crashed, which is often, since I am always doing things, I probably should not be :) I thought it would be handy for everyone else, I did document it in the post :) |

2nd favourite has to be "My name...José Jiménez" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%...nez_(character) :p |
Re: Linus is talking to me?
This reminds me how far things have come in a few years. I've called it Lye-nucks for years because when I started using it, I didn't have a sound card. Yeah, they used to be luxury options back then.
I know the "official" way (which has changed since the sound file was recorded, notice?), but since his name is Linus it was a logical step for a mute computer. |

From several sources of rules for men: "Christopher Columbus did not need directions, and neither do we" Most of us only read all the documentation if we think there is a good chance that somewhere it will say forget all the rest of the instructions. |

Read documentation:Yeah, it drives some people near to me mad. They give me a nice present, and I spend a half-hour in the manual before I finish unpacking it. (If the manual contained assembly instructions, I skimmed them, or skipped entirely, but I know how to reconfigure, rebuild, or anything else.) |

Re: Linus is talking to me?
Except that the .wav says LINN-ucks; the I is skewed a bit towards EE (on account of accent), but is still much closer to I than to EE; as for uks vs. iks, I'm inclined to agree with the author of that SuSE page that they're, in practice, indistinguishable.
I don't know how you, or the SuSE dude, would take that initial pronunciation as LEE-nuks; to me it's plainly LIN-uks, with a bit of an accent. But I guess we (you, me, and Linus) all agree now, so it's irrelevant... ;) |

Re: Linus is talking to me?
Wow. So, since 1992, i've been pronouncing "linux" correctly. I'd guessed it wouldn't have anything to do with how he pronounces his name. I'm so prophetic.
Maybe that's because i read manuals. For the record, i'm a guy. There is some evidence that Columbus did his homework and knew the world was 25,000 miles in circumference. But Moses led the Israelites around and around for 40 years because he wouldn't ask for directions. |

There's also evidence that Columbus had access to ancient maps that showed more than he was willing to let on. Another rule for men. ;) |

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5IfHm6R5le0 The Finnish pronunciation of the name "Linus" is roughly LEE-noose, and in Finnish the word "linux" would be correctly pronounced "LIH-nooks". (Little bit of language trivia here, Finnish tends to emphasise the first syllable of its words, so for example you should say "HEL-sinki" and not "hel-SINKI"). However, Linus is from the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland, and he works mainly in English, so the situation is a little bit complicated. :-) |

So it is the same as he pronounces his name. |
Re: Linus is talking to me?
Penguinbait is quite right, the "Lye-nuss" pronunciation is an Americanism, it's not used in Swedish or Finnish.
|
Re: Linus is talking to me?
Except in the video, Linus himself says his name in English is LYE-nuss.
But are you going to believe that joker? Who does he think he is? |
