Optimize forum page for tablet use

I dearly love my little n800 (os 2008). My wife thinks I should marry it. But ironically, one of the hardest things to do with it is to read and search this forum. Kudos to the forum gang, this is a GREAT forum, a real community, as the recent tale of penguinbait's lost nokia iillustrates. That said, there are a couple of minor but annoying problems that could be easily fixed by the all powerful webmaster.

The teeny tiny numbers marking the following pages (1, 2,3, etc) in each thread are ok on a big pc, but devilishly hard to hit with a stylus. Bumping up the font size on the numbers a notch or two, maybe adding a little more space aroiund each digit, would really help.

Search function is very tricky. On the tablet, the search box opens way down the page underneath the virtual keyboard. Worse yet, tapping inside the box does not bring up the keyboard. I finallly figured out that only advanced search actuallly works in this fashion, but also adds another page load which makes searching less efficient time-wise.

Thanks again to all the gurus who have helped to make this little box of miracles the best invention since sliced bread!

Check out the themes selection at the bottom of the page. One of the Mobile's just might be to your liking. hth

Re: Optimize forum page for tablet use

Well, the mobiles might work, but some of them leave important things out; a lot of us use Classic, with some custom CSS.

Thanks for the tip, grog. I never noticed that little drop down menu box for skins. That solves the search problem nicely. But the mobile skins have the same itty bitty little numbers to advance through the thread.

This is being worked on.

The custom CSS only works properly with the classic skin, but it does give big fat page numbers. The itT CSS was adapted from what I rigged up on my own tablet, as seen in this screenshot, it uses screen space better than Classic normally does, and has finger-friendly navigation:

Re: Optimize forum page for tablet use

Hey Benson - how do we enable itT CSS on our N810s?

TIA,

Steve

PS last night got google talk with video working between the N810 and my home computer. I had my 14 year old daughter on the home computer in the other room. I put the tablet in front of the cat and he was very interested - his ears would perk up, and with my kid's face filling the tablet screen and her voice coming out of it, he did not know what to think!

Loving the n810 more every day (today is day 4).

Re: Optimize forum page for tablet use

In post #3, I put a link to the thread where brontide is maintaining a bundle of css; #1 in that thread has general info, and the download; #2 has the question how to install, and #3 has your answer...

Note that I have not tried brontide's stuff yet. I use my own stuff, and haven't got around to merging his in, so I don't know exactly how they compare for itT. Brontide has CSS for a lot of other sites, too, though; I'm not saying it's worse or anything, just that it may not look exactly like mine in the screenshot.

How about telling us all the particular steps or a link for what you did to get google talk w/ video working from n810 to PC?
I tried gizmo recently and google talk a while ago, and they did not work.

I second this. Please give us a brief what-I-did.

My experiences with video on gizmo and googletalk have been unsatisfactory to say the least. I used GoogleTalk once with my N800 and not at all on my N810.

I have Gizmo5 and use it for the GCDialer app. Honestly I haven't tinkered with Gizmo Video in a while, tho, they may have improved the app by now.

Gizmo Video works to the PC. Not beautifully, but it works. Just checked their web page, looks like the video has gone from beta to final.

Hi,

I second that!

Using the "mobile" themes is not really an option, as they don't show links for quoting posts and they don't show links for attachments to posts...

Using the classic theme (or the other two n8xx ones) is really slow on my n810.

Not being able to use ITT properly on the tablet is kind of sad.

Cheers

Franko, welcome to the world of inexcusable problems with the NIT in general.

You'd think a device LABELED and sold as a quote un-quote INTERNET tablet you could expect a rock solid browsing experience WRONG !

The NIT is a great little device that does many things for many people but not having a reliable browser is just sad. I can crash mine on command in less then 15 secs, reliably strangely enough.

Ah, now there's a fine example of an incredibly subjective opinion.

Reliably reproducible you say? Had you ever considered filing a bug? Or do you just want to ***** and moan about it here where it has zero chance of ever getting fixed?

TTgowings 2008-06-11 09:51

Re: Optimize forum page for tablet use

Yup, just want to **** and moan thank you.

I have filed and voted on bugs TYVM, on several diff problems and nothing ever seems to get done or Nokia has deemed them not a big enough of a problem to do anything about it.

And how or why is it the browser seems to get worse with every update ??

Plenty gets done, you're just not paying enough attention, or maybe you expect them to get fixed immediately. I don't know.

Mind linking me to your 15-second-crash bug?

Another incredibly subjective opinion that doesn't seem to hold water based on my experience with MicroB.

Re: Optimize forum page for tablet use

Like the bug with the keyboard repeat rate, it just semmingly randomly repeats out of nowwhere, how is this not a major problem that should have been fixed months ago ?

Yup, np at all, for instance load ITT, then change it to or from fit width to view and reload the page. It will either crash the browser immeadietly, will sit on connecting or will randomly reboot.

I don't want to sound like a chump or have hard feelings on the tablet especially with you as you are very helpful person on these forums (as this is about the only reason I've not gotten rid of it yet) I just dislike when ppl don't or won't admit there are some serious issues with the NIT.

And as a matter of record, I've recommended the NIT to several ppl, (a budy of mine just got one a couple of weeks ago vs buying a laptop, he said he loves it and is extremely happy with his purchase) and when I've had it out in I've shown them what it's capable of they are very impressed especially for the money compared to other devices, though most ppl are oblivious that this device even exists. it's a great investment if you have lots of time and patience, also some knowledge of Linux really helps.

It's still really annoying how some ppl seem to want to sugar coat or not to recognize at all some of the big faults that it does have.

I have no problem reading this forum on my N800. I have installed the CSS which Brontide posted here a while ago together with my own fixes. I don't even need a stylus, I do everything with the thumb.

While there is a solution to every small problems users find, I would prefer that Nokia adds a menu entry for "Optimised" browsing on a small device, basically adding the CSS hack, setting minimum font sizes, configuring the D-Pad etc.

That'll never work it just makes too much sense. :D

I have no problems with the forum and no CSS too. I have only problems with the front page.

Now on a different tune - strangely enough with the new browserd daemon in Diablo my browser crashes less. That at least justifies the new bugs introduced with it (at least for me).

I can't reproduce your problem, maybe its the Diablo...

The NIT is a great little device that does many things for many people but not having a reliable browser is just sad. I can crash mine on command in less then 15 secs, reliably strangely enough.

We're starting to mix up 2 things here: various bugs in general (which might be considered severe or not, depending on your point of view), and the fact that ITT is hardly usable on the tablet and makes browsers choke.

About ITT: I have problems with this site not only on my tablet, but also on my laptop and on one desktop PC I use every other weekend. Both the laptop and the PC are old, but they do what their meant for - except on ITT. So I guess blaming the tablets for this is simply not fair. It's the HTML design, not the browser/hardware.
