Scientific apps on N810?
What I've read about the N810 has impressed me greatly, and I popped into a shop to try one out today. Nice machine! And what a screen. Since I use linux exclusively, both at home and at work, the opportunity of a handheld linux machine is an added bonus.
However, I can't find out what apps will or won't run, or can or can't be ported to, the N810. An especial interest for me would be scientific apps: calculators, graphics and symbolic software (like Maxima, Axiom, Yacas), or numeric software like Scilab or Octave. Has anybody got experience running scientific/math software on the N810 - and does it do this job reasonably well? Thanks, -A. |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
While I wish I could run Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, or Matlab, there are a few math/science applcations that run nicely on my N800.

ANNOUNCE: Mephemeris - Astronomy Program Just here! my new Reopository for chinook New port : TiEmu 2 (Screen rotation or real keyboard requiered) etc. |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
I got GAP (http://www.gap-system.org ) running on the N800, see here:

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Most of the stuff I usually need runs nicely:
emacs23 with tools and extensions maemotex R (Statistics and graphics) gnuplot, phreeqc (geochemical) and cxtfit (hydrogeological simulation) Due to space restrictions all packages reside under /usr/local which is symlinked to a ext3-formatted partition on the external card. Do expect some delays for initial startup, after that even simulations run reasonably fast. |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
I ported a new version... of wxMaxima for maemo... this uses wxwidgets 2.8.8, I working on have wxwidgets 2.9.0-svn ... working... because it has full hildon support
I ported NSP2, this is a Mathlab like application... not a clone like Octave... NSP2 is very fast.. and have better functions... deb http://maemo.vivaphp.net/ diablo misc All it o my repo... read more on my blog http://anunakin.blogspot.com |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Please use maemo extras. Especially wxwidgets 2.9.0-svn would be great.

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
There is also x48, an hp48 emulator http://yannbng.free.fr/Maemo/x48_0.4.3_armel.deb It runs slow, and it doesn't seem to work after the diablo upgrade. Anyone with Diablo want to give this emulator a try?
I got maple v3 for DOS running under DOSBOX, it runs slow and is difficult to make inputs with. EDIT: wxmaxima is great! I had some trouble adding its catalog though. What worked for me is: Catalog name: Anunakin Web address: http://maemo.vivaphp.net Distribution: /pool/ |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
I updated one of my N800 NITs to Diablo, and since then have lost the Free42 app. Things I have read state that Free42 will work with this OS, but after numerous different attempts, I have had no success installing it.
I really love Free42. Any assistance / advice in getting it running again would be greatly appreciated. M5 |

Your installation problem may be because of maemo was down in the past, try again now. I just did it. I am running 4.2008.30-2 on N810. Not much of a help, uh? bun |

Is this the method you used? Frustrating. |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?

AppManager>Browse installable apps>Free42 installed 1.4.40-hildon1 May be add the catalogue 1st from the home page and choose from app manager. bun |

Actually, appmanager>browse installable apps>all I look down the list of them in alphabetical order....no free42 shows up. (which is why I went the route I did). Thanks |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Add catalog
maemo Extras http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ chinook diablo free non-free That should do it bun |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Any chance anyone will compile a diablo version of maemo-stars?
|
Re: Scientific apps on N810?

I did verify that the repository.maemo.org/extras (with chinook and diablo, free non-free) was in the catalog listing and that the catalog was enabled, but still no Free42 in the listing under ALL. I updated N800 (unit B) to Diablo and edited the repository.maemo.org/extras added the parts about chinook and diablo (this now matched my N800 unit A) and Free42 was in the list on N800 unit B. Free42 is installed and running on unit B, but not unit A. Like I said, weird. |

As someone suggested before, using the extra repository would be an excellent way to distribute them :) |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
You got Kstars there, but it looks like its running on er- windows? I did not find any port for it. And it would be nice to see some package.
(BTW octave is sill not in the repository). |

Anyone know where I can find the maemo port of Maple? Edit: nevermind, realize it has to be ran under the Mac Emulator Basilisk. |

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
When I try to install ( from http://maemo.vivaphp.net/pool/ )
Maxima or wxwidgets or wxMaxima , I get the error "Incompatible application package" from the App Manager. ( N810 with OS .43-7 ) A dependancy problem ? Please, what am I missing ? ( Also, calling this repo, as suggested, Ananukin http://maemo.vivaphp.net /pool/ in the App Manager showed only one app. but not these. ) Any help appreciated, this app. looks so promising ! |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
If I remember well apps from that repository needed to be installed in red pill mode...
Edit: I was right, add the repository, then enable red-pill mode in the application manager (be sure to have Extra-devel disabled and return in blue-pill mode as soon as you have installed the desired app) or in the terminal as root type "apt-get install wxmaxima", either one will install wxmaxima and all the dependencies needed ;) |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
@ JustNick !
Reading about the pills on this forum has scared me a bit of taking such medicine , so . . . I used your second tip and , Thanks, that did it. ( Perhaps I'm lucky to run maemo fram the int. card, considering the total size.) I (new to Linux) begin tto understand why the app. manager isn't designed to do this, the consequences might overwhelm a NIT-beginner I guess it's time I read the apt-get manual on the net . . Thanks again ! |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Don't mention it ;)

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
boys, can you help me with installing nsp2 from same repo?
Red-pill mode isn't workin in my case (when i choose "red" option in app manager - nothing happens) imho it is broken by installed bootmenu when i try apt-get install nsp2 as root i xterm, it gives "couldn't find package nsp2" error thx in advance, sorry for my eng.. |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Just being curious about NSP2 .
A google search for NSP2 left me ignorant, except for a reference to Mat(h)lab, which seems to be a high level math progr. lang. ?. I would welcome a short comment on what NSP2 is. TIA. |

My google kung-fu is better than yours :-P

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Oh , didn't think of truncating the 2, I just searched for nsp2.
Thanks ! |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?

Anyway I had problem installing nsp2 because it needs libg2c0 which seems to be deprecated when you try as root the following command Code:
apt-get install libg2c0 |
Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Home and sources for NSP 2:
http://cermics.enpc.fr/~jpc/nsp-tiddly/mine.html libg2c0 can be found at maemo chinook extras, you need add this repository before try to install nsp2-cvs Quote:

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
I compiled the new version of nsp2, it is very fast... I can rotate a 3D graph, on real time... :P

nsp won't open for me....
Code:

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
Also get gcc with gnuplot. This allows you to test out embedded algorithms and stuff like that. Also can do math that is unique and may not exist between R, wxMaxima and octave.

Re: Scientific apps on N810?
GNU bc (basic calculator) would be also a nice have.
http://www.gnu.org/software/bc/manual/html_mono/bc.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bc_programming_language It work's on N810 in Linux, but there is no package of it in the extra repository. |
