[Canola] "Off topic?" Carman news! Now closer to Canola, EFL based and more!

Hi Guys,

Sorry for this Off topic :) but the new version of Carman is getting so close to Canola that I think it belongs here as well :)

http://www.marceloeduardo.com/blog/d...pcoming-update

Let me know what you think :)

Fully opensource, as it already was in august more or less the release !

really good to hear that carman is getting (more) development time. I have found that there are a few bugs in its current version and hope they are addressed in the next version.

the roadmap shows that GPS integration is forthcoming, and that will be a nice thing to see. The UI looks pretty snazzy, and even in its current form is easy to navigate.

what i do wonder about is the ability to create a vehicle-centric profile and use vendor specific error codes without having to code them out in an XML file. is this kind of functionality a possibility?

Ohhh Handful, you tease! God I'm excited - when....?

Looks stunning. I take it that it all integrates using GPS. Will the maps app be in the final release? What maps does it use? Wayfinder or Google etc.

I like the trip report feature, reminds me of Nokia's sports tracker, which I use on my cycle rides.

Brendam, I am inviting Eduardo, the lead dev behind carman in the forum, so he will be able to answer precisely your questions :)))

Well, we cannot use google maps :) licensing problems you know, so openstreet maps is the default. BUT it's just like maemo mappers if you know what I mean :)))

It indeed have this similarity with the sport trackers and in the future we want to be able to add even more (actually is already working) like real time communication between peers over Gtalk accounts :)

Update: The expected release date is August (second or third week) We expect to have it on the website working, tested and ready to be used at that time. Also fully opensource.

Carman's looking pretty sweet! Definitely would be interested in this. By the way, would it be compatible with bluetooth devices such as this?

Red: I can almost swear that we do have some of those here on the development team :) I think it's the bluetooth one. (that was the goal, you use some OBD2 to bt converter.. and we connect to BT to do the app) Again I am just waiting for the tech guys to joing here to answer better.

:)

At the bottom of the software page Carman and the tablets are specifically mentioned. Still a little too pricey for me though.

Wow! Thank you!
Sad that N810 doesn't have an acceleration sensor, so you could release the ultimate driftbox (www.driftbox.com).
Or can we use a N82 over bluetooth to get acceleration data into N810? (like ExtGPS)
This would be awesome if Carman supports acceleration data from a Nxx phone over bluetooth and work like a driftbox with GPS logging...

Ahh thanks, I didn't see that as I only scrolled through the menu. Sweet!

With regards to the price, most of the car enthusiasts I know use ScanGauge II, which costs the same as the OBDKey with Bluetooth module. The benefit of using Carman on a tablet would be more extensive logging and analysis. I think it'd be a great tool to optimize driving habits for increasing gas mileage.

Hi folks,

since version 0.6 carman supports Obdkey.

In this new version we focusing on the EFL UI and on the data comunication daemon. The version 0.7 will have 3 new modes:

- Gauge (already available in the current version, but with a better graphics and interaction)
- Map view - integrated with GPS
- Trip report (see the obd recorded data crossing it with geo location data - OBD x time or distance X geo location data)
- Follow ( using pidgin to exchange geo location and obd data with a buddy) - nice to see where your buddy is ;)

We are working hard on it and we expect to have a release soon.

Re: "Off topic?" Carman news! Now closer to Canola, EFL based and more!

folhabranca,

you're saying that i can now see what my air/fuel mixture ratio is based on altitude, given the same speed and engine load? now those are datasets...

i digress...

i have the elmscan 5 bluetooth device. the data that is reported by carman is done so in a serial fashion. that is to say, one sensor is updated and then another, and so on. are there obdii devices that allow for a more parallel operation that will allow updates to occur in a more real time fashion?

is the serialized data collection a functional limitation of the elmscan device or that of carman? i am really interested in getting a device that more closely shows the data in real time, as i figure its the elmscan and not carman.

i may have an elmscan 5 BT up for sale in the near future...

Carman Update Coming August

Quote:

Marcelo (aka handful) of INdT has announced that the new version of Carman is coming August. Carman is an on-baord diagnostic analyzer for the internet tablet that lets you monitor and detect problems on your automobile by accessing the data stored on your car’s on-board computer, the same data that service technicians use. The new version gets a user interface overhaul and mimics the interface of Canola. A Trip Report feature has been added that lets you graph your trips so you can find the fastest and most econimical route, based on engine stress. It also adds simple navigation using maps from OpenStreetMaps. Some screenshots below. You can find more at Marcelo's blog.

Re: Carman Update Coming August

Hi Brendam,

Eduardo is going probably to answer you in more detail, but as I was aware of this detail since the beginning I can talk about it :)

It's indeed serial, and you need to get the values in sequence, but the improvements made by eduardo and the team (Folhabranca is his nickname) is giving now 100ms reading time, what you will give you aprox. 10 values / second, and those can be of different sensors. As altitude and others comes from gps you will be able to have ~13-14 values / second :) I believe it's a good data set!

This delay was really annoying and now I think it's much more improved and responsive :)

ADDING : screen for the Follow feature
This is really nice feature: Imagine being able to set routes based on your friend, not a place? Well we actually are not going to deploy routes live tracing now, but it can be done easily.

i have a few posts ( here and here ) that go into a bit more detail about the vendor specific engine codes and the functionality that would be really neat in carman. i would love to hear from eduardo or his team on the feasibility of implementing a more user friendly way of showing those codes and their description.

i really cant wait for the new version to come out, as it makes "shade tree mechanic" diagnostics that much easier.

The DTCs description is in the dtc.in file (https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scm...02&view=markup)

This file contains a general error description that can be edited by the user. The UI reads a python gdbm version of this file that is created by this script https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scm...02&view=markup

Re: Carman Update Coming August

i just read a little more about the "track your friend" option and, aside from the comparative drag racing that it will induce, it seems like a cool little feature. undoubtedly, users of the new version will be chomping at the bit to get a real, fast data-type plan (wimax or cell radio) built into the NIT's to take full advantage of this feature.

this can also help when stranded due to auto failure. one could possibly diagnose the issue, stop at the auto parts store to pick up the needed parts and meet up with the person who is stranded. kinda like a custom "on-star" without the governments ability to hack into it...

Yeah brendam,

There's a lot of good, personal and comercial use for that. It would be great to see fleet controlling and monitor on the go, security usages, convoy of friends with live communications so on and so on :)

Regarding "track your friend," that should be a Canola feature. It sounds more of a Social Networking feature. ;)

Reggie : yeah, but the track is more for Imagine you're going together to a place where only your friend ahead of you knows the way. The traffic can make you lose each other, so what if your device (Canola+Carman Edition) "Navigates" using him as guide :)

to that track your friend point, there is also the possibility of mesh based real-time traffic data, if an open, platform independent architecture could be formed.

Re: Carman Update Coming August

Yes brendan, that would be the ultimate, but then I think it's a little bit bigger than we could handle ourselves... but with carman reamining fully opensource, maybe if a community forms around it can make it happen :)

Well, if you have the two points (friend ahead) and your location, I guess a usual generate direction query can be performed. I see the point of using a different route though to avoid traffic.

Another case if you are in a certain meeting place, you can query how far are your other 10 friends from you, or who among your relatives are within a 5km radius. ;)

I have received this kind of product :
Ebay
I tried it with carman but I have a connection error, seems that carman is not compatible with diablo.
I will give you my feedback when it works.

This is a product based on ELM327 and bluetooth so if it works for me, there's no reason why it should not work for you.

Carman is compatible with Diablo, infact I have the exact same model of scanner. It does have problems connecting some times but when it does, it works fine.

Thanks for the information.
I tried about 20 times but I still have the connection error.
Maybe my key has been broken during the delivery, I should try with a laptop.
Looking at carman's garage, it seems that another user is experiencing the same connection problem ( bug #2667 ).

There are definitely issues with establishing the connect but when it connects it works continuously after that (until you disconnect). I think the best bet is to hold off until the new version is available.

Having looked at the "roadmap" from the carman webiste I would be very suprised to see a new release in August. The roadmap shows that 0.7 release should have been done in may, and 0.8 is "not started".

No idea how uptodate they are but it doesn't look good.

To keep with this thread what scanners are people using that can be purchased from reliable US sources?
I've got to support:

1998 Chevy Cavalier
2004 Honda Civic
2008 Honda Fit
and
when it comes in
2009 VW TDI Jetta Sportwagen
any suggestions welcome.

I think that what was expected for May was postponed to August. They achieve 90% on most of tasks.

so the folks that are having issues with carman on diablo, how did you get it to finally connect? I keep having a "connection error" messages as well. i deleted the profile from carman and re-created it, to no avail. i even deleted the elmscan 5 bluetooth profile and re-created it.

i can find no logs for carman, and would like to see more on that front in a future version. if i could do any troubleshooting, i might be able to figure out what is going wrong.
