HowTo: Aim using Google Talk on the 770

If you don't mind relaying through an extra server, here is how you can your AIM contacts onto Google Talk.

Check out this tutorial on how to do it: http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/go...msn-yahoo.html

*NOTE*: The AIM server on that page, ursine.ca, didn't seem to work for me. Instead I connected to jabber.anywise.com and registered the AIM Transport from there. I'm sure there are more servers with AIM transports on them. Thats just the one I used.

I now can talk to people on AIM using the 770's Google Talk.

I keep getting an "Authentication Error! Incorrect username or password." However, I know for sure that my details are correct. Have tried a multitude of servers and get the same response, yet can log into aim express or directly into ichat for example. Any ideas?

Worked fine for me, except all of my relayed MSN contacts show up as offline. I can still chat with them just fine though. I too had to use anywise.com.

Was anyone able to get ursine.ca working?

Also, do the aim contacts show up as online in Google Talk? When using Psi, the aim contacts can come up in my list as online, away, and offline. In Google Talk they always come up as offline but you can still send messages to them.

I added a little step-by-step tutorial on the wiki page. Does it matter which server you're using?

I used this list http://www.xmpp.net/bycountry.shtml to find a working US transport server which bgmn.net is working for me. Anyone know of a way to access an AIM hosted chat room? User created room on top of that. Likewise my aim buddys arent showing if they are online or not.

I did this earlier, here's how:
http://www.jabber.org/user/userguide/ , sections 3, 5, 12, 13. For section 12 I used prolly.org.

I think i'll just wait for someone to port gaim :D

So has anyone gotten AIM contacts to show up online? I linked my Google talk account to my aim account and all shows up offline... Kind of curious if setting up another jabber account and having it linked to aim will work anybetter... anyone tried this? I would, but I am off to a movie.

mike9285 2006-06-12 04:05

Same problem with jabber. I think there not coming up as online because Google Talk on the 770 is only connecting to the google server and not to the aim transport service, so it can't pull each contacts status.

I have registered a Jabber account at jabber.cd.chalmers.se, and then registered with their MSN transport (msn.jabber.cd.chalmers.se). All works fine on the 770, my MSN contacts show up as online, but I have to wait around 5 minutes for them to do that.

They also have an ICQ transport (AIM), at icq.jabber.cd.chalmers.se, and an IRC transport at irc.jabber.cd.chalmers.se.

Solace 2006-06-12 22:54

jabber.cd.chalmers.se Doesnt appear to support AIM... Since this is the big one that everyone i know uses (Although i wish they would use IRC or Googletalk) I'm hoping maybe its a problem with the servers I'm using as to why they arent showing up

maba 2006-06-12 23:00

As I wrote, the address for the AIM transport is icq.jabber.cd.chalmers.se. I haven't tried it myself yet so I don't know if it's working, but I'm using their MSN transport and it's working fine, so I don't see any reason why the AIM transport wouldn't be working too.

Solace 2006-06-12 23:15

This looks like strictly an ICQ transport... Other servers that suport both will give you the aim/icq option... this is just ICQ... trying to register with it, it will not log in my aim s/n wheras other servers that support aim/icq will

infinitespecter 2006-06-30 07:44

I set it up and it sort of works, but none of my AIM contacts are showing up. Any suggestions?

mallard 2006-07-03 00:24

Im using 2006 final and a jabber account at tuff.org.uk, set up the MSN transport with Psi on my Mac (except that the mass of authorisation requests then crashed Psi, so I had to (labouriously) accept them all with iChat) and it all works perfectly, status shows up, everything. There may be some minor problems with starting a conversation, but this could be due to my wireless network and Mercury (on my Mac) not being able to hold a stable MSN connection.

Maybe they improved Jabber support for 2006 final?

Well, I tried the AIM transports on both prolly.org and tuff.org.uk, and both had all contacts show up as offline on the 770, final 2006. Maybe MSN transports have more luck for some reason?

Toshi 2006-07-06 07:00

after several attempts i finally had success with adding my AIM account (as in getting the hundreds of authorization mesgs, one for each contact + a confirmation). i used a server from this list: http://www.xmpp.net/bycountry.shtml working my way up in my country until i found one that had open registration (as evidenced by Register not being greyed out and having proper response when right-clicking it in Psi after entering it in under Service Discovery). deepdarc.com was what i used, fwiw.

AIM contacts not showing

I've had similar issues with Google talk. Not all of my AIM transport contacts want to show when I use the google talk, but they work fine when I use Gaim (on the PC) or any other jabber client. I think it's a google talk client quirk. I'm using tapioca for now.

janjansenbe 2006-08-12 11:37

Gaim is now available on the OS 2006 porting page (http://maemo-hackers.org/wiki/MaemoGaim)

Cheers, Jan

It's working great!
Thanks!

Tested ICQ, AIM and IRC.

Re: HowTo: Aim using Google Talk on the 770

*bump*

Now that the N800 has a more comprehensive Google Talk client, has *anybody* gotten AIM contacts to show up (status and all) using Google Talk on the N770/800?

:D
