Google talk in the new 2006 OS discussion
So I thought I'd kick things off with a problem I'm having, though I'm posting with the intention that this turns into a general Google Talk on 2006 discussion (I mean the VOIP part specifically I guess).
Works fine between me and a friend when either one of us is connected to the desktop client. 770 to 770 just isn't working. [] Although we both have pictures set up, they don't appear. [] Calls get through, i.e. the client rings no matter who initiated the call, but when the other party answers, it says 'Connecting' until it times out. Now it occurred to me that it might be a firewall issue so we disabled them at both ends, and added port forwarding for 5222 - still the same issue (though I'm not certain 5222 is for the voice part - it's on Google's help pages, could be just for the jabber text chat traffic..?) Could it be that the desktop version uses some kind of port forwarding, maybe using UPnP? (that maybe the Nokia client can't do yet?) |
I can't even get Google Talk connected to the server, are there others experiencing the same problem? I've got linksys wag54g adsl router and I can connect using my desktop. I even disabled the firewall but nothing changed.
|
Well I I'm fairly certain we've now tried every permutation of who initiates the call, who's on 770 and who's on PC, with and without firewalls and port forwarding...
Works fine when it's a PC and 770 regardless of who initiates the call and which of us is on PC/770, even with firewalls turned on and without port forwarding. 770 to 770 voice call just doesn't work no matter what we try :(. Text chat works fine 770 to 770 in the same environment (firewalls, no port forwarding and all...) |
there are so many bugs.
. sometimes or some account can not connect (can not pass athenticate) . when connecting wlan or change presense of gtalk online state, 770 will reset (delete and change account may solve, but it may apear again) . when received a call, 770 may reset . when take a new call, it may always say "no answer" or other error . contact application may generate may strange contact under gtalk group . sometimes, internal mic is too sensitive. sometimes sensitivity is too low . when gtalk is active and backlight is off, 770 may usually halt and can not come back again (sometimes, backlight will not light again). i have to pull out battery to restart the machine. . (not a gtalk bug) fullscreen keyboard is too hard, we must press with much pressure (set pressure to lowest level). press characters near backspace will always triger backspace. |

I'm having an issue w/ no contacts showing up in quick contact applet. Otherwise so far I've been able to have a few chat's w/o issue.

Firewall... and gtalk don't mix...
Hello,
I'm behind a firewall and neither gtalk nor chat work... (I only have access to http, https and ssh ports) I've also got a socks proxy running, that can help me bypass the firewall... but... how do I configure the Nokia 770 to use a Socks proxy?!?! (so that i can use Gtalk.. and chat...) thanks. |
Guys - please report your bugs on maemo bugzilla so they get seen & dealt with

For each one you want to see on the Speed Contact menu, just tick the checkbox on the right. Or did I misunderstand your problem? Brad. |
Voip from my 770 to a PC and vice versa worked great. I may be able to test 770 to 770 today if my buddy ever wakes up.
I dislike how contact management works. Ya have to be able to sort online/offline... you *have* to. I don't want to sort through several hundred contacts (even with the [A-D][E-H] quick index buttons) just to find the one or two people that are online. Think about it. If you're sending them a chat/call request, they should be online. |

I agree with hedgecore, the contacts should at least have an option to hide offline contacts in the chat application.

I am using jabber accounts and have no problems with voip 770<->770 (router, firewall).
Quality is of course not like skype but ok (A server near me could raise quality a bit I guess). Googletalk is still beta, so they might have problems with their Server. Btw. I would not use gmail accounts, but I know, I am here alone with that opinion...;-) |
duey: I didn't even play with the contacts app yet. It's easy to sort the online ones and initiate a chat/call from there.
|
you're right. anyone on gtalk whos online appears in the contacts app.

770 to 770 google talk worked
I just tried a 770 to 770 Google Talk session and it worked. The call was a bit choppy, but not bad considering this is Beta and the call was from Berlin to Toronto. (so internet latency and lag may have played an issue)
I had tried previously with someone on a dial-up connection and it did not work. Perhaps it will not initiate the call if both parties do not have a decent amount of bandwidth? Just a thought... -Sandstorm |
Im getting frustrated...how come google talk and chat work for some people and not other people (including me). I've tried to connect to different access point even. Still no joy.
Quick question who has it working. When you are in chat or talk, and you click "start chat" or "select contact" does it tell you by the contact name if that person is online or not? Or does it only tell you when you are in "contacts" only? And I see you can only have 4 "speed contacts". It would be cool if you can have more than 4 and be able to arrange it the way you want and it's scrollable. And on top of that, it will have a status by the name if they are online or not. |
Yes, it tells you the persons online status on the "Select Contacts" page.
Let me know if you would like me to test it with you, as I have had it work with at least one other person. Take Care -Sandstorm |
To view the online status for a contact you have to obtain authorisation from the contact - there's a menu option to send a request for authorisation. People who have imported pre-existing contacts may have imported the "authorised" attribute and so it's already working for them, but contacts created "new" in the 770 will require authorisation before your 770 can determine the online status of each contact.
One "bug" I've found is that the 770 sometimes disconnects from the Jabber/Google network (possibly due to the auto-away/10-minute timeout function) and once this has happened it's not possible to reconnect to Jabber/Google until I disconnect and reconnect the WLAN. |
Slightly OT - how does one setup a chat room, perhaps we could create one for the Nokia 770 or OS 2006?
Also, when viewing the list of available chat rooms - has anyone found a room with more than zero people, or is this just me? I'm yet to find a room with anything but zero members. :( |
Sand: I'm not the only one in Toronto with a 770??? Awesome! Toronto Hydro is going to blanket the downtown core with Wifi soon.
|
Woah...my google talk just mysteriously started working. Of course I never had a jabber account, but I assume it created one when I sign on on the 770? I don't know...but I had a google account already, but only now appears to be working. Do I have to sign up for a jabber account somewhere else before it works? Geez..now that I have it working no one is online for me to test!

Someone test me. narongpung@gmail.com

I find the best places to find open wifi connnections is near condos or apartement buildings. So many people with routers, that someone inevitably leave theirs open for use. Getting back to the topic at hand, has anybody made a call that has not been choppy at all? I've had it work several times, but the call is never 100% perfect. Hedgecore: If you want to give gtalk a try let me know. My addess is gumscan at the gmail domain. -Sandstorm |
Well, I've tried the folks who've posted their gmail addresses here, and nobody's answered. Either my timng sucks, or there're some ports I need to open on my router. Off to Google to investigate.
If anyone wants to give it a shot, my gmail address is dfbrothers at the usual domain (I avoid posting anything that even resembles an email address; harvesters are getting entirely too smart). - Dennis Brothers |

>>gtalk is returning no answer when I try to call you. Do you have your presence set to connected?
Might be that I was talking to somebody else - I've had two conversations in the last while: an outgoing to neoredux on jabber; and an incoming from narongpung on gmail. This damn thing works! Both were 770s at the other end; 770 at my end. I'd try calling you back, but you haven't given your gmail/gtalk address. - Dennis Brothers |
brothers that was me narongpung@geemaildotcom is my gmail account. I spoke to you for a bit...first successful call. Pretty neat. I'll be sending everyone gmail invites now and try to get them on gtalk...hahaha.
|
Just use jabber! you don't need an invite and its open source! its even compatable with gtalk! try:
i'm neoredux@jabber.org try to message me |
FWIW, I got my gmail account without an invite - signed up through their cellphone deal.

I have been using my 770 to plot out all the free wifi around. Nearly all Futureshops and BestBuys have free wifi. The Hotspot consortium ($30 a month) chased away most of the free wifi coffeeshops but there are a few Bridgeheads that have them around yet and some independents that will give you an hour or so with a purchase. I have not found any good unlimited dataplans from cell providers up here. The only one that I found mandated that you use a Crackberry and it was *expensive*. Quote:
I was doing some experimentation while talking to myself on another system (sad, I know). It seems that the 770 gtalk has some pretty agressive background noise suppression and echo cancellation. So I would imagine that in an environment with inconsistent background noise, things would get rather choppy when the squelch kicks in. I also found that the noise suppression takes quite a while to recover after a big spike in the microphone input like a tap on the case or clapping. Best results seem to be had when talking at a consistant volume with a background noise at a steady level and not talking when the other speaker is talking. I found the external speaker volume output a bit low. I had to crank up the master volume and application volume right up to hear ok. I would imagine that it would be nearly useless in some street noise unless you had a headset. Anyone try out a bluetooth headset yet? |

I would propose that people join the "770" chatroom directly. Don't bother searching for it as I suspect that that feature is broken as I get all the chatrooms listed as zero people too. |
for those of us using jabber, what is the address of the chatroom? to see, go to Chat / Room Settings / Room Addresd

More gtalk experience
Just tried calling the two folks I talked to earlier, switching from WIFI through my cable modem to DUN through my cellphone (115 Kbps). Connected to both, but voice communication was essentially unreadable.
This was unexpected - I've had previous experience with VOIP through cellphone. I'm a state RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) operator in MA. We had a hurricane drill in MA last week, and internet was down in the state emergency operations center. We communicate with NWS/SkyWarn using a system called EchoLink, which is a hybrid ham radio/VOIP system. I ran EchoLink on my laptop, bluetoothed to my cellphone, and it worked as well as a broadband connection - perfectly clear copy, no gaps in transmission. The fact that gtalk doesn't seem to work in the same circumstances is somewhat disturbing - I had hoped this was the <hyperbole> ultimate </hyperbole> communication solution - voice communication anywhere, even outside the range of WIFI. Guess not. - Dennis Brothers |
Do I just create a jabber account on the 770 or do I have to get a pc client first and do it?...cause my jabber connection still isn't working, but my google one finally did.
Oh and everyone go to "770" chat room :) |
