Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

Mozilla have a new beta release of their mobile based browser Fennec.
If your interested in checking it out here are the install instructions at mozilla. http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Fennec/Releases
http://bp0.blogger.com/_jkXkicG2wVo/...600/fennec.png

I just installed it, and so far it doesn't seem very stable but it might just be my system. I will do a little trouble shooting and see what I can find.

Proposed GUI for future release...

Is this for N810 only? I seem to recall something about needing the hardware keyboard.

Mozilla says 800 and 810

Supposed GUI doesn't equal what it is. As much as I want yo play with this, the UI is so important to this project that I will have to wait on it. Thanks for this link though; its now a bookmark for me on my N800 Diablo.

Well, the Wiki says "Installing Fennec on Nokia N810" actually. I have an N800, but I downloaded it anyway. It seems that it is not properly set up for the on-screen keyboard to activate when the cursor is placed in a text box. You can open the finger keyboard by pressing the center d-pad button once the cursor is in a text box though.

Also, as crabolsky said, it seems extremely buggy (at least on N800). It just closed on my randomly while I was trying something.

Anyone try it on an N810? Having any better luck?

Awesome!

More mobile interfaces! Hopefully the transition between these states are fast and the browser responsive.

I'm all for this. It it works well, I might install it on my desktop.

The lighter the better.

YARR!

while it installed flawlessly on my now diablo-based n810, Fennec is crashing after running for more than a minute or so at a time. Not very usable at this point.

Calling it unreliable is charitable in Diablo on the N810. I've got a fairly clean install, stock kernel, minimal apps, and fennec 0.4:
  1. Won't load www.cnn.com without crashing utterly
  2. Will read mozilla.org site for at least a few pages before crashing utterly
  3. Is slower than microb - takes about 50% longer per page
  4. Jump scrolls rather than flows (page scrolls on finger release)
  5. Won't access the ITT forums (home page is ok)

I had about as much luck with their alpha release several months back. This software just isn't ready for the public, and testing it is painfully frustrating.

Unfortunately and can confirm all of the above. It crashes within a couple minutes of being opened (regardless of usage). Too bad really. I will be looking forward to future releases though, the video walk though looked amazing.

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

That seems really "alpha" for such a high release number. It really sounds like Fennec should be numbered as version 0.1.4 instead of version 0.4...

A "Beta" release numbered 0.4 should work most of the time for most of the people. This sounds like it works very little of the time for very few of the people. That's still "alpha" territory.

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

you can not access any sort of keboard, you have to use an on screen keyboard, from debian chroot or something, if you are using the n800. To me that meens EPIC FAIL. Damn you mozilla, trying to make the n800 obsolete.

Or use the thumb keyboard by pressing the center button on the d-pad

It works fine for me just they need to better implement the software keyboard for the N800.

Actually, the Wiki doesn't mention a version number or a status. It certainly doesn't claim that the release is a beta. In fact, the only way to even see a version number is to follow the installation instructions. (Well, the instructions themselves have a version number in a screenshot, but that's version 0.3, not 0.4.)

Actually, I wouldn't even call it alpha, but since there's no real definition for "alpha" and "beta" in software, it's all a matter of semantics. (My personal definition of "beta" is that it's 100% feature-complete, and fairly stable, but most people appear to have a much less strenuous definition.) Version numbers (particularly pre-1.0 ones) are even more ambiguous, so I don't personally see anything wrong with them calling it version 0.4. After all, that could imply that it's less than half-way to a 1.0 release. My suspicion for this is that it's actually just a number than keeps incrementing, so eventually they'll get to 0.10, then 0.11, etc.

Basically what I'm trying to say here is that the Wiki post itself seems fairly reasonable.

I installed last night and was completely unable to even get the thing to launch, much less tinker around.

I am having about the same luck. Installed fine and once i get it to open It runs great for about 30 seconds and then just shuts down? I would like to mess around with it a bit more but im just not patient enough to continue to open and close the darn thing every minute.

If you check out this page you will see that this is not even an alpha in Mozilla's view.
The alpha is expected " August 29, 2008 - Fennec Alpha 1 "

And it seems like M5 is scheduled to come out in two weeks.

Just got off the Mozilla #mobile IRC channel here is the info I got
Quote:

<mfinkle> ericdkirk: M5 will be code frozen at the end of today and a test build will be made tonight
<mfinkle> if it looks good the build will be M5
<mfinkle> so, there will likely be something to install sometime on Sat or Sun
Quote:

<johnath> ericdkirk: and we're looking into the crashes - it looks like our compiler is being overaggressive with its optimizations
Sounds good to me, I will be installing it tomorrow.

Right now M5 is not in the repo and there is no deb either, but there is a new version of the xul runner, but it is a tar.bz2 (if you do not know what it is you can not install this). If you noticed my last post, they said if there were no problems it would be posted, there might have been problems. You can ask in their IRC channel.

Negatory. This is not a usable update. Don't bother installing.

I installed both debs in the 'hourly' folder from here and they worked, well they still crash after about a minute. The hiding nav buttons have been implemented, the menu button hides/shows them, but still so soft k/b.

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

My install segfaults right away. Even with a clean profile.

Its a milestone though. Therefore, makes sense. I still remember running Mozilla (SeaMonkey) milestones years ago. And, at some point, they gotten pretty stable.

Speaking of which. Anyone able to run Sunbird on maemo? I tried to compile it in SB but not much luck yet.

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

I installed over my M4 installation and even had to ignore that my app manager wanted to upgrade the version of XUL runner I have installed from the deb. But I installed the XUL runner first and then the Fennec deb.
Letting the App Man update my XUL runner now. will report what it does.

Edit:
The XUL runner in the repo does not work with the Fennec M5 (unofficial) deb, you must use the one that is in the directory with the M5 install.

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

Hey just spent some more time on the IRC channel and found out that you have to use 'chinook' as the distro to get m5, it is only in chinook now. You need to uninstall fennec and xulrunner first. But just so you know they doubled the time you can use it before crashing, it will last for 2 minutes now!!!

Re: Fireofx Mobile Beta 0.4 (Fennec) Released for n800 and n810

I have discovered, well people on Mozilla's Bugzilla have informed me, that if you run 'fennec' from the terminal, the program is more stable and will run much longer. Don't expect days, but I have gotten 8 minutes out of it.

Yeah, I've been able to use M5 (0.5) for quite a while. It has the nice zoom in feature which is so useful on iPhone/iPod touch.
