Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

I've been spending quite a bit of time the last couple of days running down apps that broke since my Diablo upgrade. Some I've fixed, but many I've found that they are supose to be broken! The typical underlying culprit is the currently broken Python interpreter in Diablo.

In any case, wouldn't it make sense for us to make a list of apps that are supose to be broken under Diablo so that us mere users won't be bothering the developers asking them why there app(s) don't work anymore on their IT?

So I'll start the list:

:( Canola2
:( gpodder
:( homewifilevel
:( homeIP

Seems to me there are lots of others, but I either forgot about them or I have not verified that they are supose to be broken.

For developers, this thread might be useful for you to report when you get the app working again.

These are working fine for me in diablo and I don't use the other two. You may need to enable/add a few more catalogues for chinook to resolve all dependencies.

More useful info would be describing how your apps are broken. Do the applications run but there are regressions that were not in chinook? Can they install and then don't run? Can they not install at all because of needed dependent applications missing?

Two tips I picked up from the other threads that solved the majority of my outstanding update issues:
1) Add the chinook extras repo in the application catalogue:

2) Run an 'apt-get -f install' as root on the tablet

:D

I survived 2 days with Diablo before reflashing my N800 with 2008SE_2.2007.51-3. The last straw was when all of a sudden "Refresh application list" disappeared from the Application Manager's Tools menu.

I meant to suggest this before, but I think all the OS 2008 Diablo (Beta) threads should be put in a new forum folder.

@OSEmuTech: There's no refresh application list in Diablo, you have an always visible update button down there at right.

gpodder work for me (under Diablo) on my N810.

I have used it to register for several podcasts and played them OK.

What was the problem?

Same experience here, once I identified the proper repositories, and ran 'apt-get -f install' seems to have fixed most of my issues. They should have made those instructions a sticky.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

The paucity of 'broken' apps listed thread is actually demonstrating the opposite point. I want to make it clear that my experience with Diablo has been excellent and the developers are to be commended for a significant improvement (at no cost to us, btw) in the NIT.

I have had no* apps that are 'broken' under Diablo. Gpodder works fine. Canola2 and USB control work also. SimpleLauncher transparency has been broken since the previous firmware flash. AdBlock plus works for me as well (better, perhaps, since it doesn't seem to slow things down as it once did).

*OMWeather was 'down' for a week or so till the developer got back from vacation.

Several times now, already, I've taken advantage of the 'auto-update' (is that what we call it?) feature. This makes updating pretty easy, an, imho, it would be nice if developers would put their app in maemo/extras to improve the updating experience for the users. This is not a complaint...I'm just sayin...

Bundyo 2008-06-30 17:41

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

OMWeather has just been updated. Settings works.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

I'm with Greyghost... I've had no issues, other than OM Weather, but that one was quickly updated and I required more information for installing Mitter 0.3 and rotating the screen.

I was made aware about uninstalling the gizmo, skype and rhapsody-installer killing a portion of the system updates; again a place where this community came in and helped once I took the time to search.

The apps are all updating/installing for me... which reading the continued issues, I don't know if I'm lucky or just followed all of the hints that have been dropped here by helpful members like qwerty12, et al.

Good luck to all in this thread.

Yes, I have to add that I do follow the forums closely, so I was helped out by many helpful members here.

I may have been lucky but my owe my easy transition to many here who helped me avoid the pitfalls. Thanks!

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

I am a newbie to Linux. Last week I upgraded to Diablo. It was my third reflashing since I bought it last March. The only thing I had to adjust was the missing Chinook Extras repository. That was all. No problems getting all of my old apps running again within minutes (except for OM Weather, that continued working from the restore but crashed if I entered into the setting section. But now it is fixed too).

Very nice upgrade process, comparing to others I suffered in 'Windows World'.

Ah, thanks Bundyo. :o

It's a good thing I have 2 N800s so I can tinker with Diablo on one while still having a fully functional, customized, and decked to the hilt other one.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

Yes, messing around with the repositories a bunch mostly did the trick for me too. Thanks for all the help people.

The earlier tip about gpodder did the trick too, but not until I fought battles with "Incompatibe Package" errors I was getting in the application manager.

In some instances I had to browse some of the repository sites to figure out its structure and adjust the Application Manager's Catalog entries accordingly.

So now I have a lot of places where I have both entries for Chinook and Diablo for the same repository. This can't be good, but it seems to be what is needed at this time.

Being a Debian and Ubuntu user on my PC's, I feel I kind of know how apt-get and repositories, as well as 'upgrades' are supose to work. The state of affairs in this Maemo world sure seems to be a mess. Fortunately since this is mostly an open source and community supported project, I am very optimistic that things will get better. So to others getting discouraged by all these upgrade issue, hang in there, we'll get through this andthings will be better than ever.

I've only owned my IT (N810) for about a month now and I'm totally adicted to it! Some day I'll have to post list of all the things I've got my IT to do for all those potential newbies who wonder what these things can be used for.

Anyway back on the thead, Canola2 still doesn't work, but that's okay for now.

Try rebooting a couple of times and browse a little. The red ABP icon didn't show up for me immediately either.

Also noticed there was no /home/user/.mozilla/microb/adblockplus/ directory so I created this myself and copied my old patterns.ini into this. (chown user:users for directory and contents, chmod 755 directory)

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

Flashblock works fine. In fact, I discovered Flashblock when using Diablo, and I've never run it with other versions of OS2008.

But let me add this: The fact that there are many, many users who are convinced that this or that doesn't work with Diablo and have been unable to find solutions must mean something. I think it means that support for tablets isn't as effective as it needs to be. Maybe exhorting users to SEARCH! isn't the ultimate solution after all, because many users are giving up.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

Flashblock works on my internal boot, but not my boot from sd. it installs, but below the blocked flash object is another flash object, so it totally defeats the purpose. this happened to me in chinook as well. my internal flash os is a fairly clean flash, so it must be something i installed in my sd boot.

Flashblock has never worked for me, I think it's a dodgy port :/

I like to use a flashblock greasemonkey script instead.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

Thanks for your suggestion, I followed the advice, but it doesn't work.

Regarding restarting multiple times: I believe this is due to people starting the browser too fast again. Perhaps one needs to wait till browser and browserd are both really closed down. So thats what I do for now, although I still restarted multiple times tho.

I had no /home/user/.mozilla/microb/adblockplus/ either, and don't have old patterns.ini. I made both, now my patterns.ini is:
# Adblock Plus preferences

[User patterns]

[Subscription]
url=~il~

[Subscription]
url=~wl~

[Subscription]
url=~fl~

[Subscription]
url=~eh~

Gave them permissions 755 & user.users as you suggested.

Whenever I try to install or remove Adblock from the components list the whole browser crashes. This even happens on a fresh ~/.mozilla

$ pwd && echo NAME && grep em:version `ls -H */install.rdf` && echo VERSION && grep em:name `ls -H */install.rdf`

Even with all the dictionaries, greasemonkey removed & purged, and adblockplus removed and installed, it still simply doesn't work.

BTW, using 'check updates' finds a new adblockplus version using this one, or not, doesn't make any difference.

Edit: for some reason it works now, no idea why...

I installed Flashblock yesterday and I've had the same problem for some Flash objects. And I just have a standard internal boot.

EDIT: this problem has also been seen by tso.

Now I've seen that after restarting the browser, all components I installed have disappeared! EDIT: after renaming the .mozilla directory (to make sure to start from something clean) and rebooting my N810, the components reappeared.

Re: Let's list broken apps under Diablo?

I totally reflashed my NIT and started with a new .mozilla profile. Not used any backup. Then I compiled the extensions for Diablo in ScratchBox. Haven't had a problem since then. Yes, sometimes need to double click to get Flash working (Youtube) but 1) I don't watch Youtube a lot 2) Often Flash ads are crowded on webpages. If there is one thing I don't want on my NIT its ads... but I see the point of not wanting to download Flash at all too. I just think flashblock is a more user-friendly way to surf. I'd love to have NoScript on the NIT too, but that'd probably not be user-friendly enough to handle...

Funnily enough, the Greasemonkey script stopped working, so I decided to go back to Flashblock (same install and same .mozilla profile). Now Flashblock works like a charm o_O.
I guess it 'fixed itself' over time.

Could you try on http://www.cio-online.com/videos/lir...tiens-274.html? I had the problem on this URL (and on YouTube too). With this page (which contains 4 Flash objects), the second Flash object appeared below its container and wasn't blocked (this one isn't an ad, but this is a bug anyway). Note that I have no problem with Firefox + Flashblock on my Linux laptop. BTW, I wonder if the Flashblock port for MicroB is too old: it was announced in January while the latest Flashblock version for Firefox was released on May 16.

Also, all the components I installed have disappeared again!

EDIT: I eventually reported a bug: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3471
