Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Hi
I made a little application for my personnal use : Roadrunner It alerts You when You're approaching a speed camera (beeps and LED blinks) Speed cameras locations are available for United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Sweden. http://david.hautbois.free.fr/joomla...=108&Itemid=62 David. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Looks good, does the speed camera info include the direction (i.e. do you get false positives when going under/over bridges, or parallel to roads, or in the other direction?).
Also, does the db include the speed limit at the speed camera location? |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Ah, is the source anywhere, or is this closed-source?
|
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Actually, I've no internet connection at home.
When I get it, I can open a project on maemo garage. The application alerts You when you're approaching a speed camera and stops when You're going away. You can have false positives (I don't know the side of the road, bridges, etc....) The free database ( basic access on http://www.gpsinform.com) does not include speed camera. Roadrunner does not support the premium database. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Sweet application, I could find myself having a big use for this (shame I don't live in any of those countries though).
|
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Maybe You can find a ov2 file for your country.
It should work.... |

BTW shall we load all ov2 files each time from : "Mes\ POIs/Tomtom/" : RF.bmp RF.ov2 RFR.bmp RFR.ov2 RM.bmp RM.ov2 ZD.bmp ZD.ov2 -- http://rzr.online.fr/q/gps |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Hi David,
Do you know about FoxyTag? Quite a lot similar to what you have done... (http://www.foxytag.com/en/presentation.html) I'd love to see a widget or app on maemo using foxytag database ;) |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
rzr:
I 've added the sources on my website today But I don't think if it works (I didn't work on roadrunner since 1 year...) RF -> fixed speed cameras RFR -> I don't remember... RM -> mobile speed cameras ZD -> dangerous zone You don't need to import all ov2 files Kee: I will look at foxy tag I planned to rewrite roadrunner from scratch as soon as I receive the N900. I will open a project on maemo garage. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
For someone like me who a few years ago lost a close friend to someone speeding down a road an application like this that indirecty supports and promotes speeding is both sad and maddening.
Now you won't 'just' be speeding but also fiddling with a tablet in the car. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
It was just for me an idea to play with the tablet's GPS.
I respect speed limitations. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Hi
I can try roadrunner for N900 : https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=1164 First, You have to import speed cameras by the import menu. supported countries : United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Sweden Thanks for feedback. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Its hanging on the Import fixed speed cameras conformation screen, the first screen did work.
|
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Please wait during the import.
It's very long. I didn't add a nice waiting dialog window :( |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras

can i add the recent ov2 file after that? my file only got fixed speed camera in one file called it RF.ov2, just the place where it stands. not shift light cameras. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
You can launch the application in xterm to check if the application hangs on an error message.
The application download the lastest speedcam database (RF file) from alertgps.com. You can't import a local ov2 file. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
its loading red light cameras now, i think its almost done.
|
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
ok, a waiting windows should be a big improvement....

there are idiots out there who use detectors to speed down roads and be aware when to slow down to the speed limit but not the majority of us! |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Its all updated now, i will test it this week.
|
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
I added a progressbar in the last build
:p |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras

Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Thanks once again
Now it is possible to get local files. For Fineland you can get gpx file from www.gps-waypoints.net extract zip first and then use Roadrunner's import local file menu item koivjann |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Sounds like a useful program. Any way to have this for the U.S.? Thanks!

Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
ok it works now
thanks to use it i need only to executed the roadrunner in the background ? it has a sound to notify for a radar ? |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Thanks for this.
Comments: a) My phone only vibrates when the camera is nearby. No sound alerts b) It alerts me way before the camera comes (around 300 meters). Is there a way to change the distance of the alert? |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
is this a stand alone app or is it for maps app?

Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
used this app today ..... brilliant!
whats the chance of adding the following features? 1 - option to choose mph and miles (instead of kph and kilometres) 2 - do you have access to the speed limit associated with the camera? if so when the full screen camera alert appears can it also display the road speed limit in the corner? cheers. |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
ok for the miles
speed will be difficult, because all speedcams files have not the same format |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
it gives me the error "error when importing file" when I try to import a file in gpx(xml format) form www.gps-waypoints.net. does it work for anyone?
the file i tried was http://www.gps-waypoints.net/gps/gen...=Download+file It seems to be empty though. So propably no fault by roadrunner. |

Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
I found some US camera data here:
http://www.gps-data-team.com/gps-poi.php What POI file format is compatible with Roadrunner? |
Re: Roadrunner alerts You about speed cameras
Hi,
cardiff blues i have had email contact with the developer who is looking to implement the option to choose mph on the main screen and metres on the alert screen. He does not have speed limit info so he cant implement that. After further usage I would suggest a bit of optimisation in the application as follows: I use my n900 as a sat nav (albeit very basic sat nav at the moment using ovi maps 1.0) but when a speed camera is approaching roadrunner takes over the whole display way before the camera, this means ovi maps is no longer displayed so if my turn is before the camera i miss it - perhaps there could be an option to choose 'vibrate only' or 'beep only' so that ovi maps can continue to be displayed .... perhaps a voice notification could be implemented stating "500 yards" "400 yards" "300 yards" "200 yards" "100 yards" "50 yards" or 'small notification box' that appears in one of the corners of the display leaving ovi maps with the majority of the display (i dont know how hard that would be to implement though) Also at the moment after I have gone past the speed camera roadrunner goes back to its main screen ..... so to get back to ovi maps i have to do 2 screen presses which is not ideal when driving. but its a great app which i use a lot .... unfortunatly i find its not something i can use when i need it the most. I need it most when i am driving in an area i dont know - but when i am in an area i dont know i am using ovi maps for directions on the map. it seems the two apps are not able to be used together without creating difficulties hope my ideas help the app move to the next stage of development and improve usability. |
