2007HE or 2008HE

I dont know whether to upgrade to OS2008HE from OS2007HE on my 770. I was wondering if you more advanced users could help me make a decision. I would like to know which one is more stable but has the most features. I use my tablet mostly for internet browsing and as a remote for Media Center and PhoneLink.

Thanks, Avery

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I opted for 2007HE because, just at the moment, it's the more robust choice. Maybe diablo-HE will become a reality and then I'd take that. I'm using Fanoush's high speed MMC kernel, his initfs and the OS in on half of a 1GB MMC card.

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I heart 2008HE. I don't know which is quicker speed-wise, but just having the sexy interface and the ability to play with the latest files/programs wins for me. It does have its problems though, no sound is a big one, but it's pretty stable once you kill metalayer-crawler with fire.

Bunanson has listed some of the working programs here http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20161 and I have to agree that Maemo Mapper is super speedy on 2008HE.

I have been using it on standard internal flash, so I will have to follow speculatrix and try it on mmc with the high speed kernel, as I also have a 1GB mmc.

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I'm with Atarii, I like 2008HE. But since it is quite bad for media playing (you can hear sound with headphones, but the playback is not all that great), I have both OS2007HE and OS2008HE installed in a 2GB card, using Fanoush's kernel (I have OS2006 in the internal flash for charging , as it is the only one that detects when the battery is full, and I like that ;-)).

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

It's weird everybody report sound problem with 2008HE. It sounds just perfect on my N770. The only patch I applied was the fanoush SDHC kernel patch so nothing to do with sound.

BTW, to stay on topic, definitely 2008HE, especially since I have no sound problem ;-)

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I tried the softvol trick in mplayer, but it did not seem to make a difference (between softvol=true and softvol=false). However, I installed ogg-support (0.7) before (instead of mogg), and it did seem to make a big difference in the volume!

Now the media playing is working decently (, so I'm thinking whether I'll get rid of OS2007HE to free up some space.

Where did you get the 0.7 version of this? I can only find version 0.5 on gronmayer.com

Edit: Found here: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/ogg/

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I have one 770 that I played with a little bit. I have OS2007HE on it and it works pretty good. I got skype working on it, but could not get the built in SIP client (RTCOMM beta) to install. Anyone got this working on OS2007HE?

On the other hand, does Skype run on OS2008HE and how about the SIP client? (It should be already built in?) Any experience how well these work?

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

Skype has some problems with the recording codecs in 2008HE.

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I installed 2008HE but my 770 was freezing and rebooting with everything (browser, media player etc) the virtual memory was set to maximum (64mb)
I don't know what's wrong. (any help to make it work is really appreciated)
After one hour I installed 2007HE and it looks a bit heavier than 2006 but seems to work. Again veeeeery low sound without headphones on some streams.

@p900, just done mine today but immediately transferred OS to 2G MMC (using penguinbait deb). So far looking good.

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

Does anybody know what are those files on the 2008He folder from Nokia,

INSTALL 67 "One liner"installation intruction for the FIASCO image
hacker2008-patches.tar.gz 4326 patches for OS2008
hacker2008-sources.tar.gz 10897820 sources for OS2008
hacker2008-tools.tar.gz 1098 perl script to find vfp compiled binaries
18 2008HACKER 4.2007.50-6 OR F5 MR0 ARM.bin Hacker Edition for Nokia 770 Internet Tablets

And what does it do and how to use them? TIA,

bun

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

I vote 2007HE or OS2006 (to be controversial)!

After having played with OS2008HE over the past week and installing it on the MMC with the fanoush speed patch I'm impressed with how it looks but it's very clunky.

Skype doesn't work, I haven't been able to get any media players working, I've had a number of instances where the application manager and browser have crashed and a few unexpected reboots too.

Sound is the biggest issue. Fine through the headphones but not through the speaker.

The browser is well-featured but sluggish. I installed flash 9 although some video works, there's no sound and it often crashes the browser.

I don't care about flash that much but I do want a useable Internet Tablet and the sound issue combined with lack of skype and slow browser means mean that OS2008HE isn't for me.

I'm sure in time some enterprising people will figure out how to patch the issues with this release but it's only a curiosity at the moment. When the issues are fixed I'll be the first to upgrade...until then, once you know what your device is capable of it's impossible to go back - even for eye-candy!

Interesting - I too flashed to 2008HE on my 770 and there are no sound issues...

Different hardware builds?

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

Not fair. My 770 also has sound issue. Please do all 770 users a big favor, how did you upgrade and what is in your app manager? I would clean the 770 from top to bottom to get the sound. No sound is really a big problem. TIA,

bun

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

It's pretty disappointing that more hasn't been done or discussed on the os2008 front, especially regarding this sound issue.

There doesn't appear to be one bit of vaguely useful information on tweaking this version of the OS to make it more useable or any coherent threads on fixing problems that people have.

There doesn't seem to be a defined way to refer to the OS (2008HE , OS2008HE, 2008 Hackers Edition, Chinook on N770) so it's even a big hassle to try all the combinations of words to see if there has been any new developments on this forum.

Is it finally the case of OS2008HE/N770 RIP?

Re: 2007HE or 2008HE

Missed the update to this thread - sorry..
I dont have the 770 with me, so I will reply back later tonight...

Didnt do anything special though - just a flash reload and go.
Sound worked without adding any apps/patches.
