Connection with blue tooth from palm

After updating my n800 i cannot pair may palm centro via bluetooth... The palm recognizes the trusted device but cannot make connection.. The n800 also has the palm in memory, but still doesn't connect.. A brief connection occurs but immediatly disappears.. You folks know about frustration.. Anything please, don

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Are you attempting to pair to use the Centro as a modem (i.e. DUN, dialup networking) -OR- are you attempting to pair to transfer files?

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Thank you sparkling.. I am trying to use the centro as a modem, a conduit via mutual bluetooth connections to access google and email, etc..

I did update my n800 with a n810 upgrade..

Any advice? But thank you so much for asking...don

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

To test, I just paired my N810 (OS2008, Chinook) with my wife's Centro. If you had previously paired the tablet with the Centro, I would delete the existing profile from both devices and start fresh.

On the tablet this would be done at Control Panel > Bluetooth > Devices > Delete.

On the Centro use Prefs > Bluetooth > Setup Devices > Trusted Devices > Details > Delete device.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

I think the problem lies with the Diablo build of OS2008. I posted what I'm experiencing here with my n800/Treo 755 combination, and the solution worked perfectly under earlier OS versions.

I did try what you suggested sparkling, but to no avail. :-(

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Hi sparkling.. to no avail! I did everything mentioned and the Palmuser96 registered as discovered trusted advice.. but the N800, with the OS2008 messaged "Connection failed to Palmuser96".. I enterd the password numbers and followed the prompts, but would not connect.. Sparkling, i appreciated your input very much. thanks, don

I have the same problem. This use to work just fine with the old build - but now it does not seem to work after the OS update on the N800.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Thanks Dp.. and also to the Captain and Sparkling... I went to the Palm Chat and talked to a technician, because another person says that after the Palm Centro upgrade , of which i also did, their bluetooth connections were also shutting down. The Chat person consulted with another and didn't seem to know the answer and suggested i do a soft re-set on the phone. Nada Zilch.. I feel, like you, that the OS update killed the deal.. The question being would purchasing the new N810 cause the same problem?.. the N800 connectd to the phones bluetooth was always used.. I hope this thing can be resolved. thanks for your comment, Don

I am using OS2008 (Not Diablo) and I connect fine with my Centro. I use the USB Modem software from mobile-stream.com. I believe it's offered as a trial to see if it works. I ended up buying since it made the connection with my N800 and Powerbook pretty simple.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Thanks Scrabbler, I will give it a try when i get home.. I don't know if it is Diablo or not.. I did get an update to my centro last week, version 1.07 from version 1.05.
I am glad you had some success.. many thanks, Don

Scrabbler 2008-08-05 18:00

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

My Centro is running 1.05 with the USB Modem. I hope it works for you in 1.07.
Did the 1.07 get pushed to the phone, or did you have do so something manual?

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Hi Scrabbler... I followed the directions via Palm and thus corrupted my SD Card via formating.. it appears all was Okay, but I decided that Sprint should do the upgrade themselves.. I primarily was looking forward to the My Location feature on Google Maps, and faster access to YouTube as well as opening attachment..

Sprint upgraded without the SD card and everything was working as expected until I attemped to pair my Centro with the upgraded Noki N800 with OS2008..

Prior to these problems, the N800 could scurry over the internet and would recognize bluetooth instantly from the Centro.. Anyway, perhaps there will be a solution.. Thanks Scrabbler for the message..Don

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

You need USBModem, in my experience. I am working just fine with the latest (1.07) of the Palm software and Diablo.

Google Maps worked great with my Holux GPS, as soon as I upgraded from the ancient version of Google Maps that was on the Centro.

Unfortunately, the Centro is working well enough in general that I am taking my N800 with me less often. For example, I am about to go pick someone up at LAX and I probably won't bring it, just the phone.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Hi Geneven, I appreciate your decision to wean yourself from the tandem of phone and N800..your affirmation of the marriage of 1.07 and Diablo being compatible means a lot. I decided as well that the Centro has enough goodies to go solo.. thanks for the Holux GPS tip.. have a safe trip within the traffic madness.. thanks, Don

Ok, here is my experience:

1. I have a N800 but I didn't had a Bluetooth enabled phone until a few weeks ago.
2. Today, I upgraded the N800 to Diablo. When the tablet rebooted, it asked me if I wanted to pair with a Bluetooth device.
3. I looked at my Palm Centro nearby, and said "Why not?". enabled Bluetooth in the Centro (keep it off people, it's a battery killer), and selected OK
4. The N800 asked me to select my country from a drop-down list. I selected Argentina
5. The N800 then showed a list of the 3 local cellular providers, I selected mine ("Telecom Personal")
6. It asked me to pair the unit and gave me a 4-digit PIN. I quickly changed it to a 8 digit pin :-)
7. The Centro was added as a trusted device to the N800 and vice-versa.
8. On the list of connections available, my Palm Centro shows up on the N800.
9. I can select that connection, connect, and browse, seamlessly.

I never had to select "modem" or do any other fancy configuration other than what has been described above.

Guess I'm just lucky?
FC
PS: I expected the Centro to show a small delay or show "connecting to GPRS..." as often happens when starting a TCP/IP enabled application, but there's nothing displayed... it sorts of does all the connections in the background.

PS2: I *WISH* the N800 browser could show a "packet meter" (bytes sent/received) somewhere (upper-right corner of the browser window would be nice, with sugar on top, please :), to keep track of how much money we're burning while browsing over Bluetooth/GPRS...

Hi Fcassia.. What a terrific and concise explanation.. I am thrilled for your seamless connection isn spite of the subtle anxieties hidden in each click.. i thank you so much for your step by steps.. your idea of the packet meter never occured to me, a great idea.. well I am going to give it another try. thanks again, Fcassia, Don

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

fcassia also has a gsm Centro that didn't have the Sprint upgrade. I upgraded my Centro as well and haven't been successful in pairing it up with my new pre-Diablo n800. I had no issues with my 770 and 700p until the WSOD of my 770.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Thanks again dbaddler, the revelation of private frustrations seems to lift the feeling of "What did I do wrong" to my units.. It was so convienient wearing my Bluetoothed Centro on my hip and going anyplace on the web with my N800.. Now the N800 seems useless. My phone contract expires December.. but I want to thank for clearing up the issue that fcassia didn't have the same Centro, i am glad his works.. Take care, Don

For what its worth, tonight I upgraded my Centro to 1.0.7 running USB Modem, and can still successfully access the web with the N800 OS2008.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

not that I've tried it yet, but I'm sure it works via 3rd party such as USB Modem. It just isn't right that you should have to resort to 3rd party software for a basic DUN connection that used to work out of the box. Will definitely drop a quick email to palm.

Scrabbler, it'd be interesting to see if you deleted USB modem and tried to connect natively.

I agree. Especially since I can connect using the same phone using an old 770, a Mac and a PC with no problem. It's definitely an issue that's unique to Diablo.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

well if it is a Diablo specific problem, then at least it could be a quick over the air fix.

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

I am a new member and new N800 owner, but I have had palm smartphones forever.

Isn't the whole point in getting a 3rd party app like USBmodem or PDAnet - to mask the data from the N800 (or laptop) so that to your mobile provider it appears that the data came from the phone?

For my plan with US:Sprint, I have an unlimited data plan for all data coming from my Treo 755p. But if anything links to that phone, I believe I am charged 2cents ($0.02) per KB. Those pennies add up.

Again, I am a newbie - but am I missing the point? Do some of you not get charged a PAM (Phone as modem) charge?

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Hi WildCard... That is what I thought as well, I recently converted my plan and retained my Unlimited Data plan with additions, for a more economical all inclusive package.. The PCS tech told me that the bluetooth connection was all that was needed to pair to the Nokia N800. It connects for a second then disconnects. He suggested to get hold of Nokia.. This was the same PCS Technician that paired my N800 with my Centro when I bought it... Thanks for your thoughts... Don

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

It appears that USBmodem for Palm OS is on sale for just today for $9.95. You can do it for free supposedly on many phones, but this configures everything and masks the fact that you are using your phone as a modem.

$10 is pretty cheap insurance.

Saw this on slickdeals.com:

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

I think you guys need to troubleshoot one step at a time. It seems the original post indicates that the phone and N800 can't be paired. That is a bluetooth issue whether due to the phone update or the Diablo update. A bluetooth connection to the phone should be able to be created independent of whatever data plan the user has, or how they are connecting to the cellular network.

adonybus 2008-08-26 20:33

Re: Connection with blue tooth from palm

Thanks leedog77, that does make sense. My Palm Centro immediatly paired with my Garmin GPS, last night, without any intention of pairing from me.. Don
