MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Hello, All!

I have ported MasterGear 2.6 to Maemo OS2008. MasterGear is an emulator that runs games written for 8bit SEGA consoles: SEGA Master System, GameGear, Mark2, Mark3, SG-1000, SC-3000, and SF-7000. To read more about MasterGear and download Maemo version (as direct .deb download for now), go to

http://fms.komkon.org/MG/

In a short while, you should also be able to find it in Diablo Extras.

Thanks!

Quick note, on install I'm getting the following:

File '/usr/share/applications/hildon/mg.desktop' contains invalid MIME type '/application/x-sf7000' that starts with a slash

Here is the relevant section of the mime types file:

Quote:

<mime-type type="application/x-sf7000">
<comment>SEGA SF-7000 disk image</comment>
<osso:category name="documents"/>
<glob pattern="*.sf.gz"/>
<glob pattern="*.sf"/>
</mime-type>
As you can see, it does not contain a slash. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I had a look in the file listed by dpkg and it did seem to have an extra / in it.

From /usr/share/applications/hildon/mg.desktop (highlighted in red):

Code:

MimeType=application/x-sms;application/x-gg;application/x-sc3000;application/x-sg1000;/application/x-sf7000
Though I don't honestly know if this will make a difference. It may be that dpkg reports it but then it's auto-corrected in the mime files?

The whole message from dpkg on install:

Code:

Unpacking mg (from mg_2.6.0-1_armel.deb) ...
Setting up mg (2.6.0-1) ...

Hopefully get a chance to play with the actual app soon - currently got too many cycles busy using rsync to back up everything on a 16 GB card to my desktop ;)

Oh, it is a typo in the .desktop file! Thanks, I will fix it right away.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I have fixed the problem and uploaded the new .deb to the homepage. Unfortunately, Extras is no accepting my ssh login at the moment, so it may happen that the repository version will have this glitch for a few days. It's not life-threatening though, so it can wait until the next release.

This emulator runs great. Better than the NES I would say. Thanks!

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Type 'game gear roms' into google - bingo!

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

what are the file extensions supposed to be? I've tried sms and not working or should they be gg?

stobbsc 2009-12-10 16:41

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Thanks for the help guys.

I've found some roms to test, and I select the files but then nothing happens. Am I supposed to do something after selecting the file or do I just wait? or how do I load and play, I can't find any instructions anywhere..
Thanks
Chris

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

you need to install mastergear then open it from the application menu, it then asks you to select a file so choose your game file and away you go.

stobbsc 2009-12-10 16:48

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

yeah I have installed mastergear then I select one of the games files for example Bubblebobble.gg

then nothing happens all I get is a black screen :-(

andygt 2009-12-10 16:50

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

are you selecting the game file through mastergear?
gamegear file extensions are .gg - just tried it with Sonic and works fine.
Try a different rom and see if that works.

stobbsc 2009-12-10 16:58

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

this is exactly what I did:
1 - open mastergear
2 - I get prompted to open file automatically
3 - broswer to Nokia N900/Documents/Roms
4 - select file "Robocop vs. Terminator (ue).gg"
5 - a Blank screen apper and nothing happens.
6 - Click on menu bar at top of screen
7 - SElect open file
8 repeat steps 2,3
9 - select file "Double Dragon (UE) [!].gg"
10 - Nothimng happens all I get is a blank screen.

Nothing something I have noticed is when I browsing files the icons are question marks?
Also for all the games I have tried to load there is now a file called .sav for that game.

So is mine broken?
Do I need to put roms in a special place?
Are my roms broken?

What should do now?

Thanks in advance for the help :-)
Chris

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Try uninstal the emulator and install the emulator again, all the times the emulator got crazy and show the black screen of death, this resolve the problem.

andygt 2009-12-10 17:04

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Sounds like you are doing everything correctly - just tried with the same files you have mentioned and they work fine for me.
I have question marks for the files too and they are just stored in Documents/GameGear Roms
I don't see any save files though.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

1) maybe the ROM is broken
2) maybe the ROM is not compatible with MasterGear
3) maybe the special characters in the filename cause trouble with MasterGear

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Ok I uninstalled the emulator, reinstalled it.

renamed one of the games to only have letters and underscores, tried to load it and nothing.

I have just read here:
http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...el/mg/2.6.5-1/

that the package is missing dependencies do you think this will have an impact?

stobbsc 2009-12-10 17:18

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I've just received some rom files that work for someone else, and they don't work for me.

Just for reference my version of MasterGear is :2.6.5-1

Is this the latest version I should be using?

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Hmm... the emulator doesn't work for most european keyboard layout.

We have the up and down keys only with a modifier. And games are so unplayable. Only Wonderboy and games like this works. But Sonic is unplayable. :(

It is possible to remap the keys?

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

could some do me a favour and in the menu it the debugger button. Do you get an error saying the screen is too small?

I still can't get this working. all I get is a white square in the middle of the black screen when trying to load files. but if I try load the debugger I get an error saying the screen is too small.
I've contacted the author but nothing yet...

What's the Difference between the Versions 2.6.3-1 and 2.6.5-1?

There is on-screen joypad as well.

It is possible if you use the version from Extras-Devel.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

The 'screen is too small' bug happens with a few rom files. The shining force games being one of them. This Emulator is no where near polished or complete yet but its really not too bad. It needs better compatibility and the author should implement an easy way to configure user key bindings(cant be that difficult)

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

Ive yet to find version 2.6.5.1 Even on the official site the last version for maemo posted is 2.6.2.1

Got a link for the newer file by chance?

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I have no trouble remapping keys 'Menu>Maemo Settings'.

FYI to some newbs, you need to unzip those ROM files.

Games are not full screen and it would be great if the title bar faded away for more screen real estate and possibly wide screen "stretch" mode.

Other than that the emu is running great.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I havent been able to get MasterGear to work for any ROM

stobbsc 2009-12-23 18:54

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I've never been able to get this working.
I've written to the guy who wrote this app, and he wouldn't help me either so I have no idea what to do.
I think it's time someone logged a bug and got this error public.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

My only problem with the Emulaters is that all keys that I dont set to have a function has a function. I like to set W = up A = Left D = Right and X = Down. But S is set to do something or other. I wished there was a way to clear all buttons except the ones you Set.

Oh... and Fullscreen seems to work... not streched though. Just press Ctrl and Enter while in game I think.

Re: MasterGear 2.6 Released for Maemo

I'm also unable to start any game... Black screen of death (lol). In master gear i try to open, select the game, hit open and nothing...
