Fujitsu U820/U2010 - Atom, 5.6" 1280x800 tablet/clamshell
OK, it's not horribly much a competitor, as it'll no doubt be major expensive and bigger, but it's coming to the US, and I figured it was worth mentioning. (Since everyone's comparing the N810 to the Atom-based UMPCs closer to it, this is a competitor to competitors...)
It made it through the FCC, and apparently now has 1280x800; I'm totally impressed, as that matches my 12" tx2000. It's even finer resolution (1/pitch) than the N8x0! It is missing the separate digitizer, though; just touchscreen. And they're clunking it up with Vista. http://www.engadget.com/tag/U2010/ When this comes out, there's a good chance I'd buy it if I had enough money. On the other hand, what wouldn't I buy if I had enough money? I can say with great confidence that this'll be way out of reach. |

My first question about such a gadget usually is "what's with battery life"?
I got severely disappointed by the eee PC battery life already. It's a great device (esp. with Ubuntu on it) but battery life is damn poor on it. What I would really like was a netbook like the eee with 1024x768 screen and mobile phone components like the NITs for best battery life. That would rock! :D |

EeePC 901 has 6600 mAh battery and can easily go about 5 hours with wifi... :)

if only they were offering ubuntu mobile on it. And had options for HSPA/EVDO/WiMAX cards for the CF slot.

Ubuntu mobile will be kinda pointless on an Eee. And Asus said they will be offering 3G addon cards for it (and there are menu icons and items for 3G in it even now :)
But you're probably talking about the Fujitsu :) |

I didn't say its useless. I meant what Ubuntu mobile offers more for it than what Asus already has? :)

To The fujitsu.. Putting Vista on it was a sorely mistaken and horribly stupid move. Let's put one of the bulkiest; slowest; most hardware caring OS's on a mobile device... Genius. |

To me, Fujitsu is a sub-notebook more than a mobile device. |

I'd rather full Ubuntu, or maybe Debian, than mobile, but if they've got drivers for one, I bet the others would be easy to put on. With vista, it's unlikely you can get even XP working with full hardware support, much less a decent UNIX. (I have yet to even try Cygwin on Vista, but from the performance on my laptop, I can't imagine Vista being workable in these hardware constraints with or without a UNIX layer.) |

OK, I'm gonna rip a couple shots from the manual here, but yes, it's got USB (qty. 1 on the unit, +4 on the port replicator). No, I don't think there's room for all the internal USB hacks people do on the Eee (though electrically, there's at least one more USB, on the port replicator connector), and no, I don't want a dongle hanging out the side of it all the time; I'd definitely hope CF are available.
(One other point of concern, were I rich enough to buy this, would be the SD slot; my current laptop leaves SDs sticking half-way out, probably to support RS-MMC, but that makes it implausible to keep an SD in it all the time. Then again, I've got such a big HD that another 16 GB of always-on storage space is not all that helpful. This probably doesn't, so I hope it's not like that.) |

Jeebus... $1300?! I'm thinking ~$750 is probably my personal top end price point for a UMPC type computer.
