Mplayer, for better video quality and more formats/codecs.
Canola, for an improved multimedia experience.
Camera, to make use of the camera.
Gnumeric spreadsheet, for brilliant spreadsheet compatibility with both viewing and editing.
Pidgin messenger, for Instant messaging on all accounts including msn.

Re: Post the best applications for N800

Xournal - Great for writing small notes
GPE Calendar - Keeping track of your appointments

I think that just about covers the MUST HAVE applications... unless you have a grandcentral account, in which case:
Grandcentral Dialer - Easily make calls using grandcentral

Re: Post the best applications for N800

This is what I currently love using on my tablets:

Advanced Backlight - combines brightness and volume control in one applet and gives a very fine grained brightness control

Power Launcher - provides icons on the home screen for launching applications

maemo-pan - connects to the internet via cell phone with Bluetooth PAN (unfortunately no longer working out of the box on Diablo)

FB-Reader - THE eBook reader for the internet tablets

MediaBox - finger friendly snappy media player with support for a wide range of multimedia formats (through osso-media-server and mplayer) and, on the N800, FM radio

And if you're a developer or power user, there are two essentials:

becomeroot - enables "sudo gainroot" to become super user without the need to switch to R&D mode

openssh - log into the tablet from a computer, browse the filesystem via SFTP

Diablo Feature upgrade, obviously. It'll single-handedly update yoour tablet to the stability of a brick.

Wow! Thanks for heads up... I've read warnings elsewhere about the Diablo Feature Upgrade being a "bad thing," but since bricks seem to be extremely stable (as opposed to straw and sticks,) your recommendation just cinched it... I'm off to go stabilize my n800.
Thanks!:D

Re: Post the best applications for N800

...oh! You meant both the stability and functionality of a brick. Well... at least it's stable now... ;)

FBReader
Advanced Backlight (otherwise screen is too bright at night to read books)
Garnet Palm OS (waiting for an update to make files accessible)

Or you can install Videocamera

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=16867

which allows you to use the camera to make video recordings. I believe it is by the same developer, and the still camera functions are included. So there is no reason to install both apps (I think)...

Re: Post the best applications for N800

We're missing one application: It would hunt for and find the half-dozen threads on ITT about the best applications for the N8x0, and aggregate&sort them into one single list! ;)

Who's up for it? :D

Hey, you didn't include the code with your post! If it's only one line, it should be easy to include in a code block.

Indeed. But, this isn't a Perl programming forum, or a Regular Expressions symposium, so I spared you all the 'gibberish'... ;)

Re: Post the best applications for N800

Most powerful combined suite of apps IMHO Debian(all versions), KDE!
Most useful apps daily Emelfm2, Becomeroot, Quiver, Skype(no video though :( )
Games I play often Barrage, AisleRiot.
The new Diablo update is pretty good, especially the speedier web.
Just don't understand why Nokia doesn't integrate the dual boot setup we have into Diablo updates. Overall now most apps work well with latest Diablo update.

Just in case you hadn't noticed: It plays merry hell with the HWR. Then again, what doesn't?

Re: Post the best applications for N800

bunanson's worldtv is excellent too if you have reliable wifi

xgalaga is a great shoot-em-up

marbles is quite a challenge

maemo blocks aka tetris is a favourite

maemopad+ is a good but basic painting program, the key thing is it makes use of the pressure sensitive screen.

Can someone advise why I am unable to download Power Launcher? I've tried to download from Maemo and it says page not available. Can someone advise where I can get this application.

Thanks.

There is a chinook or diablo install link to choose from.

Re: Post the best applications for N800

It has been pretty much covered but...
Wordpy, for blogging on the go and upload to picasa/flickr
Transmission, the bittorrrent app
Mytube, to watch Youtube videos
Skype of course
Vgba, with Zelda and Advanced wars
Vagalume, for last.fm playback
Personal menu
Load applet
Other maemo weather

And I think these are just the very first if my favorites (excluding the ones already mentioned)

I've just discovered bun's VCUrls which makes VideoCenter far more interesting... means that mplayer is a vital application.

Re: Post the best applications for N800

I'd vote for:

GPE Calendar
Erminig

and Google Calendar Sync (installed on my work PC)

With this setup I can enter appointments on my N800 and they show up on my work computer (Microsoft Outlook) or I can enter appointments in Outlook and they show up on my N800. All I have to do is remember to run Erminig.

Re: Post the best applications for N800

The single best application for the n8x0 HAS to be gcc.

without this I couldn't have written liqbase :) which is the single best application for any system.

if you want instant memory recall and rapid sketching there is nothing faster.
