Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

Window Maker for 2008OS (Only tested on Diablo)

The DEB is about 14MB and will take up about 25MB when installed

This fits right in flash no boot from SD needed

It can be removed but will leave about 6MB behind

Whats included? This covers the majority :)

./usr/bin/wmagnify
./usr/bin/grep
./usr/bin/xdaliclock
./usr/bin/xdesktopwaves

This is still a work in progress, but its very useable. There is a bug I can't seem to get rid of. When you close your last window you have open, then "keyboard shortcuts" stop working, if you use the stylus to switch desktops they will work again. Please anyone with any ideas, let me know??

Make sure to set a password before using xlock

Also add sudo ALL = ALL to /etc/sudoers for user user

xmodmap (if you run this from the menu)
Please note this is based on US layout
It will add the following additions to the keyboard
FN + Backspace = [
Shift + Backspace = ]
Shift + Minus = {
Shift + Plus = }
Shift + ? = `
FN + < = |
FN + > = Tab Key

Shortcuts
ctrl + x = xterm
ctrl + t = telnet
ctrl + f = ftp
ctrl + n = connection manager
ctrl + b = browser
ctrl + k = xkill
ctrl + (window key) = next desktop
ctrl + (zoom +) = maximize window
ctrl + (zoom -) = minimize windows
Window Key = Switch Mouse Buttons (Right Click)

Right click on desktop to get application menu, also desktop 2 has some app icons, double click the paper clip.

Battery-status

Whats not included, there is a battery-status WM app running, it will not function unless python is installed.

To install python from a fresh system. This is the way I did it, not to say only or right way. Open application manager, open applications catalogs, enable maemo catalog, now close application manager. open xterm, become root, run "apt-get install python2.5-runtime" I dont see it in my list using application manager, thats why I do it this way?

Additionally there are some other applications listed in the menus, that you may not have installed, like maemo-mapper and skype and mplayer...

HOW TO INSTALL, just install the deb

deb can be obtained from penguinbait.com

Just go to penguinbait.com, right click on "Window Maker deb" link and selct save target as

Then install it, I reccomend saving the deb to SD card to install. The deb will install and use 25MB.

http://penguinbait.com/WM-installer.deb

-------------------

I installed fresh flash with 124.2MB free
After install completed I had 102.6MB free
After removing the deb, I then had 118.4

So installing this and then removing this will leave about 6MB behind. It will not hurt anything and nothing will be running, but some of the libs will not be removed. Sorry, its just the way this works at the moment.

I wanted to do more work on this, but its slow goin, I have some new equipment at work, so I need to spend my time on that. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think, what needs fixing or adding?

Perhaps someone can provide some screen shots. Hey I figured I would ask before someone asks me :)

I tried to install this and it died trying to replace /usr/bin/pico from the nano package. I removed nano and then it died on wget. I couldn't remove wget by itself (it had deps I didn't want to remove) so I ended up force-all'ing the install.

After that it installed fine and ran without any issues. Looks pretty good :)

Here's a screenshot :)

http://qurgh.wizage.net/wmshot.png

It seems to run fine, although it creates some windows that are bigger than the screen (eg firefox).

I'm a big Windowmaker fan so I'm going to be playing with this for a while :) Thanks!

A window manager is a window manager.. Except for the wallpaper/backgrounds everything will be pretty much the same.. (so a google search shows many screenshots for Window maker)

Whether you use Keblet or KDE for Maemo it's still pretty much just KDE.. but Maemo has a zelda on it :P.

BTW: VERY AWESOME JOB PB!

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

Sorry, I missed something. I have a broken link for ls, whoops and su doh!

open xterm
run
sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/ls.color /bin/ls
sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/su /bin/su

or if you want the original ls

cd /bin
sudo ln -sf busybox ls
sudo ln -sf busybox su

If you are already root, just drop the "sudo"

----------------------

I will update the deb to wm-installer-v2 shortly. in the mean time you can use the above

Here are some more screen shots

Great!!
Few things after a bit of playing (freshly installed diablo on n800)
wmnetload doesn't start: libdockapp.so.2 not found
wmnet throws a badmatch because it cannot find its font.
I downloaded the deb with wget. As wget is also in your deb, it wouldn't install. Doesn't really matter for me.
I'll play more, I like these small WM.
Now I have to download a virtual keyboard :(
Thanks a lot!

Yes I know about wmnet,I am still thinking I can make it work, but just not figured out why its freaking out all the sudden.

Anyway, the libdockapp libs can be installed manually if you like, I will need to update the deb again later.

As root install from root
cd /
sudo tar zxvf /media/mmc1/libda.tgz

Anyone else got any input, I noticed (CTRL-X) in pico does not work, it just opens xterm. hehe

Any other issues, anyone find this useful?

adding applications to the menu is not oo intuitive. Also getting it to display an application list is not apparent. Any guidance would be appreciated. Nice work.

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

I guess I have to dig out my bluetooth keyboard to use this at least till I get a replacement.

From my use of windowmaker in Linux proper, once you open somethng you will see an icon for it on the lower left. You should be able to drag that over and add it to the dock thing easily, Just a matter of dragging and letting go.

Also there is a windowmaker config tool that should be accessible on the dock by default for most windowmaker startup situations. I don't see it yet.

This is great, though!

Oops, I didn't realize I could just pull the wharf up, so I was just seeing one box. Duh! Windowmaker preferences are the third box down, the one with a screwdriver. Going thru that is essential for figuring out what is going on. You can probably edit the right-click menu from there, if there is a right-click menu!

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

You should be able to dock things on the paperclip too, by the way. I haven't been able to try that yet.

My Windowmaker preferences selections don't work now, though they did at first, and I can't scroll the preferences bar, though I could at first. Close on the preferences doesn't work now, though the x does. Closing and reopening the preferences doesn't solve any of those problems, though rebooting probably will.

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

Rebooting gave me access to some of the windows I saw in the screen shots that I hadn't seen the first time! But now it looks like I can't change the preferences on the preferences menu.

Now all the windows I saw have gone away. I don't understand how I am toggling them.

However, I discovered one strange thing.

If I drag one of the Wharf-boxes under the paper clip, it appears to be ready to dock to it, but instead it disappears! Fortunately, rebooting gave me back the original Wharf.

But this is great and could indeed woo me from the Hildon environment.

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

In regular Window Maker when you want to add something to the Wharf you can just drag it over to the Wharf because there is an automatic icon created on the lower left corner of the screen. How do you add stuff to this Wharf? Or to the clip, for that matter?

I have four workspaces created, and I guess I'll dock things to the clip on all four of them as well as to the one Wharf, which will give me lots of very easily opened programs.

Re: Window Maker deb available from penguinbait

I haven't figured out how to press Enter in xchat from my bluetooth keyboard. I've seen something about this somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

I'm able to dock things in several places now, including on the Wharf.

A Windowmaker FAQ might be nice, and I might put one together myself, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

What are people using for a virtual keyboard? I find the virtual keyboard more convenient than my bt keyboard sometimes.
