2006 OS is here!

Download link to US Nokia site:
http://www.nokiausa.com/support/phon...61,770,00.html

Download link to European Nokia site:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4144790

Installer and image available at maemo.org:
http://maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770.php

Install new Windows wizard and download 2006 OS with it or download image from maemo.org and use Linux or Mac OS X flasher-2.0.

New version is 1.2006.26-8.

Edited to update information.

Milhouse 2006-06-30 14:22

That appears to be just an updated Software Update Wizard for Windows - OS 2006 has not been released (suggest you change the title for this thread).

The link to the Wizard itself doesn't appear to be working on that page either - this is a working link.

In addition, you need to install Windows .net 2.0 before you can install this new wizard. :(

NokNok770 2006-06-30 14:24

G-dammmit....got me all excited. Grrr

You need Update Wizard to download new 2006 OS. Try it.

Invicta is right. The new Update Wizard download new 2006 OS.

I just installed it. It says:
Internet Tablet OS 2006 edition
Version: 1.2006.26-8

and there are no "BETA" texts on the Home theme.

Can't see any obvious changes.

There is a "Speed contacts" applet at Home,
but I I'm not sure if it's new.

Milhouse 2006-06-30 14:39

There's been no fanfare... seems very bizarre on Nokia's part to be releasing OS 2006 without any song and dance - are you sure you're not downloading the Beta OS 2006?

Would prefer a direct link to the firmware if possible, mainly because I don't want to have to keep re-downloading it if I flash multiple times (the page for the "manual" update doesn't exist so I assume it's possible to update from a local file once a download link becomes available). I'll try updating later this evening.

If you've updated already, what's does "Version" now say in Tools->Control Panel->Device->About product? For OS Beta 2006 it says "0.2006.22-21" (and also says BETA in the bottom left of the task bar and again in the system tray). Do you see "BETA" on the home page of your newly updated 770?

Milhouse 2006-06-30 14:40

@Invicta - sorry for doubting you! :)
@milen - thanks for the update

Will try updating later this evening! :D

Invicta 2006-06-30 14:42

1.2006.26-8, no beta.

NokNok770 2006-06-30 14:46

Oh my god...my appologies to invicta. This IS the NEW 2006 OS. I'm downloading it right now. You have to download the wizard...and the wizard will guide you through downloading the OS. My appologies again....It seem that you have to update from nokia...you can't download it to your computer...at the moment. The new OS version is 2006SE_1.2006.26-8

Oh and I guess Nokia did deliver as promised

NokNok770 2006-06-30 15:01

Well, one thing I noticed right away is my 2 gig card isn't working. So I guess they didn't include the patch.

There are instuctions to manual download at http://tableteer.nokia.com, but I can access is only with my 770. I get redirected if I use Firefox from my computer. According to tableteer support, firmware will be available at http://maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770, but it is not yet there.

That is really poor - there has been no feedback from Nokia on bug #621, makes you wonder why we bother testing for them (and in this case, even providing a solution).

NokNok770 2006-06-30 15:12

It's already posted on engadget . That was quick.

NokNok770 2006-06-30 15:32

I like the tableteer thing they got. It nicely formatted for the 770. And you can download some themes and games. So-so....it's alright.

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like they listened to my (and probably others') suggestion for a Nokia-endorsed (and -supported) software add-on site. This is a better idea, in my opinion, than just stuffing all of the software that they can into the flash image. For example, instead of pre-including an eBook reader (like FBReader), users that are actually interested in reading eBooks can add it onto their device, saving file system space for those users that don't care about eBooks.

Is there an Application Catalog for this? Hopefully there will be...

Invicta 2006-06-30 15:45

Is Nokia trying roll this back? They have removed information of the 2006 OS from their site and are showing 2005 OS again.

Screencaptures from europe.nokia.com/A4144790
Before, 2006 OS
Now, 2005 OS

Yes, there is:
Code:

http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ mistral user
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ mistral user

But I can't get these to work.

frenchie 2006-06-30 15:59

Something's up. I wonder what's going on down at Nokia's end.

Bowie 2006-06-30 16:08

PLEASE, would SOMEONE post a direct link to the image?

kelmi 2006-06-30 16:11

mccake 2006-06-30 16:23

Anyone knows the steps to upgrade to 2006 OS with the previously released memory card extension hack? (swapping out files to SD card)

Milhouse 2006-06-30 16:24

According to my Squid proxy, the wizard initaited the following request when downloading the image:
Code:

CONNECT aec.online.nokia.com:443 - DIRECT/84.53.154.240

fanoush 2006-06-30 16:24

firmware is downloaded to
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\fiasco.bin

While it is downloaded and flashing, one can copy this file elsewhere. It gets deleted after flashing is finished.

Bowie 2006-06-30 16:28

Would. Someone. Mind. Posting. A. Link. To. The. Image. Please.

(ugh!)

:)

NokNok770 2006-06-30 16:28

Whatever you do, don't flash your 770 to support 2 gig card. It gave me the white screen of death. I'm going to try and reload the 2006 image again. Good idea fanoush...I'm going to try and save the image this time.

NokNok770 2006-06-30 16:37

Oh crap...my download stop at 20 seconds to go....what is the deal here. I'm stuck with a whitescreen 770 right now.... :(

Milhouse 2006-06-30 16:58

Can't install osso-xterm 0.13.mh8 :( - installation fails due to a missing GLIBC_2.4 symbol in libc.so.6.

Bowie 2006-06-30 17:16

Good news.

The image is still available via the wizard as of the time of this writing (see date above..heh) ... It flashed cleanly, and looks quite good. :)

Incidentally, I copied off the fiasco.bin image, and will be making it available should Nokia kill off the last available route to get to it.

Hedgecore 2006-06-30 17:28

OK seriously. What is this? Besides the 'Here ya go - - just kidding!' approach Nokia took with this, nobody can complain about bricking their tablets if they're sneaking in the back door and picking up the goods. For once I'm going to exercise some restraint and stick to the Beta for the time being. I don't believe that a few weeks was nearly long enough for a proper bug-fix cycle given all the issues I've noticed (crashes, connection mgr not finding any APs after being in sleep mode, complete lockups, less responsive mini keyboard, etc).

Milhouse 2006-06-30 17:30

Image (and updated Wizard) now on maemo.org:

http://maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770.php

Quote:

Filename: SU-18_2006SE_1.2006.26-8_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin
Size: 63297647
Brief Description: Software Edition 2006 version 1.2006.26-8
Notes: This is the final release of the Internet Tablet OS 2006 edition published now for maemo developers. The final release will also be published at nokia.com shortly.

i installed it without problems. what for repositories do you use?

Bowie 2006-06-30 17:37

WOOT!

I dont have a WiFi connection where I am, so, I cant test Google Talk or the browser yet.. But the beta worked perfect for me, so, nothing bad to expect here.

Good things so far:

They fixed the video player. :) I'm really, really picky when it comes to the video player, so i'm glad they did a good job here. I'm watching full-screen, TV-quality, paper-smooth 30FPS, high-bitrate MPEG goodness here played directly off the MMC card. Glitchless!

For the unbathed, always encode with low resolution and high bitrate. You'll manage about 120MB per hour of video... Thats like 8 hours of video on a 1GB MMC card.

Bad things so far:

Still contains a really, really weird list of cities to choose from when it comes to the clock. How many people do you think live in Andorra, versus Phoenix or St. Louis?

Fonts are still too damn big. But thats what themes are for. :)

Have to agree - the beta was remarkably short lived (5 weeks?)

Note sure if this happens for others, but after restoring my backup (settings and bookmarks) from the Beta OS, if I reboot my 770 (which is running the "final" image) the word "BETA" appears in the system tray for a few seconds, then disappears. It's a minor bug, but irritating and once again raises a question mark about Nokia QA...

The two default tableteer catalogues;
repository.maemo.org, mistral-beta, free
repository.maemo.org, mistral-beta, non-free
maemo.hackers.org/apt, mistral, main

Edit: Seems to have installed successfully after I disabled the second of the two tableteer catalogues:

catalogue.tabletter.nokia.com/non-certified, mistral, user

Weird...

NokNok770 2006-06-30 18:02

I think that Nokia did the right thing by fixing some of the bugs and releasing it. Even though it's not tottally "fixed". I rather they keep their word and do what they said than pull a Microsoft or a Sony. That is delays, delays, delays. This way, we can enjoy what has been fixed and I'm sure they'll continue to fix those reported bugs.

I still can't get this working. I disabled 2nd tableteer repository, but I can't edit 1st to disable it too.

I get lots of errors to log:
Code:

E: Failed to fetch http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/dists/mistral/Realese.gpg
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com mistral/user Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com_certified_dists_mistral_user_binary-armel_Packages) - stats (2 No such file or directory)

kimmoj 2006-06-30 19:11

Looks like things are moving right along... too bad I can't upgrade because this closes too many doors to get software into the machine (ie non-standard arm binaries etc) but as soon as that changes I'll be joining you. ;)

dattani98 2006-06-30 19:20

Virtual Memory

VM still only allows for upto 64MB and NOT 1GB as they promised.

Does anyone have a script to extend rootfs & swap etc??

I used the flasher-2.0 one since that was what was required for the beta. It worked for me without any problems. :)
