Wonder if we will get this in the US.

Not really great look though...comes of looking a bit fragile.

Why? Reports say that it runs linux too :)

It felt pretty solid.
Based on an existing X5 PMP design they have.
HSDPA and GPS inside too.
Linux/XP variants.
I liked it a lot.

Detailed pics here.

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

I have been looking at this, and I must say that it looks pretty friggin sweet. If I could grab one of these for like 5-600 it would easily replace my n800. I, personally, would love to have a full desktop OS in a pocketable device but with the n800's specs it would be difficult. Not to mention the ARM processor... But with 1.3Ghz? GEEZ! Add in the 40GB of HD space and this thing is a monster. Another think that really bugs me about my tablet is the battery life sucks. If this really gets 5-6 hours, then that would be amazing. I don't know, maybe it's just me. But how can you argue with it's specs? The only thing I would prefer would be a SSD over an HD, even though you would lose capacity. The hard drive will probably keep the price down, thouh. Oh, and it's be REALLY nice if it came wiith at least one full sized SD card slot. I wish more companies would make full sized slots.

Hm. According to those pages (and this page), the only one that has a linux option is the X70. Too bad, I would have liked to see the S7 with some Ubuntu variant on it.

6 hours of movie playback with a atom chip, pretty interesting, too bad it comes with Windows :( .

Maybe another benefit of the 7" screen is that something like this would work

Android might work well? It took to the Eee PC pretty easily

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

A video preview of the S5 is available:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/11/v...ow-with-video/

The good: Quite snappy and lasts pretty long (not ARM long, but hey, it's still only an Atom).

The bad: Apparently no SD slot or mic in, mechanical harddrive. Regular windows is a bit tricky without mouse + kbd, but, who in his right mind would use windows XP on his MID, right ?

The ugly: Will cost around 700 euros (ouch, not sure if it's the price for the 3G version or not), almost twice as thick and twice as heavy as your trusty N810 (you better double stitch that pocket :) )

Size/weight comparison:
N810 Dimensions 72 * 128 * 14 mm, Weight 226 g
S5 Dimensions 84 * 154 * 24 mm, Weight 436 g

A small number on sale soon in US. A preview indicates that the claim to 200 hrs of true standby mode might hold up:

http://jkontherun.com/2009/04/18/vil...view/#comments

To my mind, standby was one of the biggest unknowns (and disqualifier) of atom based MIDs. The Viliv in this review at first sounds like a possible successor to my N800 + BT Stowaway, but still, it has a Windows XP and HDD and has no SD slot or 3G or camera.

attila77 2009-04-19 17:44

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

In x86, standby means all activity is suspended but memory contents are retained. It is NOT to be confused with IDLE mode on ARM processors. In standby, your IM is not running, email is not checked, etc. you just don't have to reboot to start using it.

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

I was suprised to see the size of the S5 is very close to the N800, but the screen resolution on the S5 is 1024 x 600!

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

given how windows does desktop, i fear that will not help much as most of the "gained" space will be wasted by having to bump the font size to readable...

<cap's opinion>
First off let me state that I have no loyalties.

Second, that I think it's an interesting platform, but too many flaws that far outweigh the benefit of screen resolution, processor speed, and memory.

The problem (for me) is that shrinking down the desktop to the size of a handheld results in a handicapped desktop. Tiny menus and an on-screen keyboard (??) is not my idea of increased functionality. Considering that the majority of windows apps are designed that there will be a mouse and a keyboard in mind, it almost demands that you carry these around with you to have full access to your apps.

Maemo is designed as being a mobile OS whereas Windows isn't. When I'm playing music on my tablet, and I get a call, the music pauses. Many of my chosen apps can be manipulated with the finger. I don't need to shut down the NIT or put it in stand-by when I stop using it. The NIT has a stand built in (I use this feature OFTEN).

Additionally it's a bit too fat to be 'pocketable' and size is a characteristic I look for. Honestly, I think the N810 is around the maximum size I can tolerate, but I couldn't see lugging this beast's thickness around along with a keyboard and mouse, without some sort of man-purse... or maybe a European carry-all :D. The moment I'm forced to carry my device in a bag, I'd rather have a 12 or 13" laptop/tablet.

It's a fine idea, just a little green behind the ears. As a mobile computer, the NIT stands untouched. It's a wonderful combination of mobile-size and mobile-function. This unit *almost* has the size down.

In response to my above quote:

With Android being installed on netbooks, it would be a great operating system to put on this MID and alleviate many of the portable OS problems.

I still give Maemo the edge, and prefer the form factor and features of the NITs, but I admit that with Android (or other mobile OSs), this platform isn't far off the mark. This is why I assume that in one generation or so, the field will be quite different. With the current MIDs being released, it's likely that the mobile OSs evolution will make the choice of platform one based on hardware rather than software.

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

out of the first round of intel based MID/UMPC type things that don't fall into the "netbook" category, this one seems to be the best put together with the best hardware selections of the group. The Aigo/gigabyte/compal device is the form factor i want, but doesn't have the battery life that viliv ended up with.

johnkzin 2009-04-27 20:55

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

There have been several intel based MID/UMPC designs that don't fall into the netbook category. Most of them predate the Atom, however.

Samsung Q1, Q1 Ultra
Sony Viao UX
OQO's line
Gigabyte's older slider (that's similar to the OQO and Sony)
WiBrain's brick/tablet (now owned by iKing I think)
a few other non-sliding/non-convertible tablets of varying sizes from lesser names than Sony and Samsung.

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

The device looks great. I've played with one in Singapore recently and I really like it but besides having a larger screen, I'm wondering why you would want that and an N900?

shinkamui 2010-02-05 13:35

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

I've got an S5, bought it before I bought the N900. Its not fragile at all. Battery life is pretty amazing, and performance is WAY up there for a pocketable PC (better than my oqo model 02, but not as good as my late sony UX 280p). It runs windows 7 with compositing quite well, though the drivers are still a bit immature for the touchscreen. Only very very recently has anyone been able to create a utility to turn on the SDIO devices (wifi, bluetooth, 3g modem), so I still haven't tried that yet. Nice device, however between the N900 and the S5, I find my N900 more useful.

happymonkey 2010-09-27 05:58

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

Took the plunge today and bought an S5 a real pocket pc - as an N800 owner it's perfect for me - for all you N810 folks who need a physical keyboard, techy. conservatives, check out the Viliv N5. For one thing now that EMGD drivers are out it will be a short time until some form of Linux - Meego - will work very nicely with the evil GMA 500. In the mean time I'm happy living on the darkside with Windows 7 and real portable power.

I wish I never purchased the N900 but well I'm human. The screen was always a tad too small for anything but making calls on and watching a few videos. The N800 w/4.2" screen was nearly perfect for reading ebooks, and taking long detailed notes with xournal and what not. It had a wonderful thing called a D-Pad and could easily be paired with a nice BT keyboard so that even keyboard shortcuts to Maemo desktop were available.

IMO the N900 should have been something like the Dell Streak and even more like the Viliv S5 a piece of awesome portability and even though it wasn't I went for it - what a dunce. The Viliv can easily be used with external monitor, keyboard, and mouse for my work needs and so portable that I can take it everywhere my wandering feet go - I'm basically a nomad so that's the kind of hardware I'm looking for. Yay!

I am selling mine 32GB 3G version. ~£450

happymonkey 2010-09-27 23:48

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

Imperiallight any reason for this? I don't have enough cash for the 3g model however I got a steal for a little more than $400 for the 32gb ssd non-3g. The community is nothing like a mostly open source project like Maemo but well my main occupational interests are not techy enough for me to justify the type of effort I feel I need to put into open source hardware projects, unless they're low budget like Ubuntu, using the N900 as a phone and now of course to tether my N900 to my S5 for 3g access.

imperiallight 2010-09-27 23:53

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

You can use it as a normal phone as well (as long as its always on) and Android can be installed on it as well.

Main reason is I am finding so much evolution in iphone apps e.g pdf readers with annotation, voice dictation etc etc and I can just shake my iphone 4 and it logs into my home computer via RDP for everything else. Also I have a UMID umpc (with keyboard) and my iphone 4 has its own insurance for loss and theft!. The Viliv s5 is a great device though!
