OS2006 Released! (out of BETA)

Engadget is reporting that its out!

Quote:

As promised, Nokia has just posted the Internet Tablet 2006 operating system for download -- although as of this writing you get redirected to an error page -- giving 770 owners access to those handful of new features announced last month. You'll recall that instead of dropping a QWERTY-equipped version of the tablet as we were hoping/expecting, Nokia disappointed more than a few fans by only unveiling a software upgrade that adds an on-screen keyboard along with the Google Talk client. Even worse, Nokia warns that "installed applications designed for OS 2005 will not be compatible with OS 2006 edition and will not be restored even from backup," so kiss your old apps goodbye if you're planning on upgrading. Still, current 770 owners will probably want to take plunge just so they can run programs developed exclusively for the new OS, and hopefully the software 'board will suffice until Nokia takes our advise and changes up the input style in the next generation of WiMax- and webcam-sporting tablets.

I was just on the Maemo website and there is still nothing about the full 2006 update.

phi 2006-06-30 15:23

yeah, i don't see it either, I just saw it posted on engadget. Maybe it'll be up within the hour.

fanoush 2006-06-30 15:29

looks like false alarm, I still see 'Latest version: 5.2006.13-7 (April 18, 2006).' on the page http://europe.nokia.com/A4144790 and no download link

Invicta 2006-06-30 15:32

Not false alarm. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=2317
New version is 1.2006.26-8.

maxilogan 2006-06-30 15:33

Is this guy drunk?

"You'll recall that instead of dropping a QWERTY-equipped version of the tablet as we were hoping/expecting, Nokia disappointed more than a few fans by only unveiling a software upgrade that adds an on-screen keyboard along with the Google Talk client."

I'd think users would be far more disappointed if their 2 months old 770 were replaced by a brand new device.

Mah!

Mah!

Engadget's bloggers all need to take a class in Journalism. That is the biggest problem I have with them. Unprofessional, slanted, and downright rude.

Bowie 2006-06-30 15:56

Still not seeing the link!

WTF?

Bowie 2006-06-30 15:59

Someone mind posting a homebrew link to the image they downloaded while the page was still up?

This "available then suddenly unavailable" crap smacks of both asshattery AND douchebaggery.

Try "Working download link from Milhouse here" -link at 2006 OS area at this forum.

Install and run the wizard and follow instructions to download new image.

Karel Jansens 2006-06-30 16:52

So all the bugs have suddenly been resolved?
And I can use my BT keyboard in 2006 ITOS?
And all those applications have been ported to 2006 ITOS overnight?

Really??

frenchie, Engadget is a blog, not CNN. Our readers read us as much for the spin we put on the news as they do for the news itself. We do not, nor have we ever, pretended to be sterile in our reporting, because, well, that would be boring. If that offends you or you find you don't get value from what we bring to the table, we encourage you to look elsewhere.

OK, now I /know/ you don't write for Engadget: there's not a single rude word in this entire post. Not one, dammit!

I know,

Just another example why blogs need to be held to some standards especially when blogs like yours are used for public opinion from major news outlets such as CNN. And as such from your previous comment you obviouly have never taken any such class. The sensationalism is left for the reader not the "blogger".

And since this isn't the place for such a debate I'm ending this now.

Funny how the promised Q2 of 2006 and they're releasing it on the last day. Good job guys!

I love the sarcasm offered by Engadget (I'm not being sarcastic myself, I really do like it). I just don't feel that the majority of us wanted to chuck our < 1 yr old tablets for something with a thumb board. :)

True, and yes sometimes sarcasm in reporting is warented. Granted Engadget is nothing like NPR or The New York Times, but please when I read every article I don't enjoy being blasted with sarcasm and sensationalistic (is that even a word?) arictles.

Engadget

READ SOMETHING ELSE.

Simple.

If you don't like the Engadget style then get your sarcastic tech news from another source.

Seriously, the audacity of some people amazes me.

djs_tx 2006-06-30 18:09

This thread is drifting waaaaayyy off topic but I got to give my 2 cents....

FREE SPEECH! You don't like the style or the content or the way they part their hair, go somewhere else.

David

penguinbait 2006-06-30 18:43

well as long as were off topic

Was'nt this supposed to support .wmv files? I can not open them, did they not add that feature?

Xyzo 2006-06-30 18:48

Linux/MacOSX version available!

The .bin file (Software Edition 2006 version 1.2006.26-8) can now be downloaded from here:
http://www.maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770.php
Ready? Go!

Hedgecore 2006-06-30 18:54

Ah yes, freedom. You don't like it? Go away. If I followed that narrow minded philosophy I'd be high on a mountain top beating Big Mac toting iPod carrying republicans with a crowbar trying to keep them off of the last square foot of Earth I could retreat to.

So in other news, anyone find any differences with the 2K6 Final yet?

donovan 2006-06-30 19:03

Neither the Flasher770 GUI app, nor the command line version, flasher.macosx works for me. I get this error: Invalid FIASCO subblock count (2). I'm on Mac OS X. Wish I had access to a PC or Linux so I can apply these updates "officially" but I don't. Any ideas on how to make it work with a Mac?

As I've already done. ;)

@the poster who mentioned freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech becomes much different when you begin reporting something. It's not as simple as people make it out to be. There are expectations that the editors and reporters should work up to. Sure there are slip ups as in every business, but do your best to maintain it and there isn't a problem. But if the reporters and editors don't live up to it you get yellow journalism which is what blogging has slowly become.

Has anyone found any changes from the beta to the final release (speed or features)?

dattani98 2006-06-30 19:27

Can't see many changes - some of the bugs reported (like 'updating' appearing in the top right corner when using the file manager) seem to have been resolved...

one annoying thing for me is that the virtual memory still only allows for 64MB and NOT the 1GB as promised.

Anyone have a script? (like wolframs old one?)

Final yet?

There's a link to tableteer.nokia.com, which has some downloads of themes, radio channels, and tha Maemo Blocks game. Nothing drastically different from the beta version. I noticed that the browser is more stable than before though [less crashing, no forced system resets so far]. I was able to restore from a backup of my beta settings, but passwords are reset in the browser.

My initial impressions:

- The Media players are much improved over the Beta (but I haven't noticed any difference over the v.2k5 yet). The video and audio that I could play on the old OS I can still play where I couldn't play them on the beta.

- new "tableteer" web shortcut on desktop instead of old Nokia one

- repository is now catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com

- can play mp3s and browse pictures at the same time again.

- the promised SIP doesn't seem to be included ... hopefully can be added later.

- Opera version 8.02 build 1.1.46 system armv5tejl, 2.6.16-omap 1

So it is pretty much functionally the same as the Beta but actually functional. It hasn't crashed on me yet and it isn't choking on the memory ceiling so it looks like they have been busy polishing.

Can someone list all the links in the 2K6 Final for those that want to see what's new? I would do it myself, but I restored my bookmarks which deleted the new ones. Thanks.

Can you save the kernel image from the 770?

If so can someone send me a copy? I used the "apt-get install nfs-common" this worked great, I tried to use the kernel image on maemo, to add nfs and ipv6. That was apparently not a good idea.

&$%^&, did anyone figure out how to grab the image out of a temp file or something on windows when you download the image?

I really dont want to spend another 2 hours reloading my 770, I had just finished, what a maroon!! :D

EDIT 1
I guess I should have read the whole thread, I can download the bin now :)

EDIT 2, I downloaded the bin file and unpacked the kernel from the image and reflased it, worked great. I guess I have to wait for someone to put out a new kernel to support NFS

zetsurin 2006-06-30 21:25

Lovely, this is out to coincide my screen fecking up... I have the colours all bleeding vertically across the screen problem. I'm saying buh bye to Nokia now forever. No device should a) crack and b) have the screen die in 3 months of light use.

Bill 2006-06-30 21:37

Well I still can't browse the contents of my N80 or my old T630 via bluetooth, this used to work fine with the '05 OS. Pairing for gprs access works OK.

Presence seems stable so far.

well, AFAIR, this is a OS2006 beta issue, not a hardware one, and I remember that who experienced this was able to solve by flashing the old 2005 image back

so are you telling us that neither the final release has NFS working? That's quite disappointing 'cos we weren't asking fot anything new but just to keep the working features as they were

fbreader

Anyone else having difficulty with fbreader with this release? Doesnt work on mine.....

Are you kidding. We bite before they even feed. So we'll probably know it's out way before nokia people know to notify us. hahah. Look at the OS releases...we got it before it officially shows up on nokia websites. So if it's anywhere close to being out...we'll have it.

Unfortunately, it's definitely hardware related. I know this because I tried 2005 and the 2006 final. Plus a 200MHz CPU can't do graphical effects like this in realtime ;)

Anyway, back to being

haha. Actually, it would be the gizmoproject people who will be informing us, but yeah, I know what you mean. And I'm sure they will release a beta first as well.
Can any graphic art gurus tell if the screenshot is an actual screenshot or if it has been photoshopped/gimped?

Historian 2006-07-01 01:09

just noticed that the four new themes don't have matching backgrounds.

xargs 2006-07-01 01:18

Has anyone else noticed the WiFi disconnect problem seems to be fixed?
