32GB SD adapter for N810
Update: The adapter for people with the MUGEN extended battery can be purchased here. http://www.remotefactory.com/32gbn810sd.html anyone wanting anything other than US priority mail should email first Update: The Adapter with the stainless steel cover can be found here http://www.remotefactory.com/cravesone.html Leave a post or email cgraves256@optonline.net if you think you would want something like this. Attachment 2368 I purchased a N800 quite some time ago when Comp USA was closing in my neighborhood and since OS2008 and Xournal was installed on it I have not gone a day without it. I first installed 2 8Gb SD cards in it and soon found that was not enough for my music and other files I needed each day for work. I then received 2 16GB cards from my son for a present and found this was just the right balance for what I needed. I used it as a music player and found that the different upgrades to the music programs caused problems that I could not have since I used it everyday for work. So I purchased a Nokia 770 for my music on ebay for $99.00 not knowing that it was limited to 2gb and used a special version of MMC card. Since this could no hold enough music I created a 8GB card with the MMC form factor. Under N770 see N770 8G SDHC card without hacking MMC slot http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=17679 I also sell these cards to others with no problems reported yet. I was very happy with the N800 for work and the 770 for media until my children gave me a N810 for my birthday in July. Since July I have not been able to trade my N800 for the N810 because of the memory limitations of the N810 which is 8GB for now. I also received for my birthday a 32GB PNC SD card to make things worse. Now with 48GB on the N800 it is even harder. I also realize that there will be someday a 16GB Micro SDHC card but it will be very expensive when becomes available. As for the N810 the built in GPS and the keyboard was very tempting. So I am saying all this to say that I decided to upgrade my memory on the N810 to 32Gb which I can live with. I will also be producing a adapter that will allow this to be done to any N810 without voiding the warranty ( no real reason why it should) and can be easily installed and removed should you want to go back to mini SD 8GB only. I am making everything needed to extend the memory to 32GB or to 64GB when the cards are available. I am a self taught engineer and this is what I do to keep my mind working on new designs and products for my company but this problem was easy to solve. The N810 will work with any card that is SDHC compliant and I have already tested it with the PNY 32GB card on my current unit Attachment 2364 As you can see from the included photos it is completed as far as using the card goes. I am waiting for my supplier to send the parts to me for assembly and inspection before it is available to others. The parts come with a special cover that will maintain the integrity of the N810 and I am pleased with the design. I am considering adding additional features to it but I have not decided what to add yet. Attachment 2366 Also since this is a slow year for my company I have to use my own money to complete this project. This is why I am posting this Thread to see if there would be interest from others to have this adapter for their N810 tablet? Progress Update: Completed design, Just wating for delivery of metal cover Attachment 2639 The adapter for people with the MUGEN extended battery can be purchased here. http://www.remotefactory.com/32gbn810sd.html anyone wanting anything other than US priority mail should email first Leave a post or email cgraves256@optonline.net if you think you would want something like this. |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I'm interested. How about more pics showing the adapter itself and how it all fits together? I just want an idea of what kind of footprint change is necessary.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Not to bust your bubble or anything, but an SD card reader can read SDHC with a simple firmware upgrade. The structure of the card interface is no different. The only thing that changes is the controller chip in the card itself.

Lord Raiden
I dont think you understand. This is a replacement for the internal 8GB card. This would maintain the current power requirements for the tablet. I can easily attach a 32GB Flash drive in that case. This is a solution not a quick fix. Thanks |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Im extremely interested in this product(as long as its not too high a price).
Could you provide pictures of it though. Also would it be available in the United Kingdom? |

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
definitely interested.....
urmm, if you are talking the internal card, don't you mean the internal 2Gig? or are you talking about the additional card, that we already insert and remove? thanks |

You should team up with the guys who sell the extended battery w/ bigger battery cover. It'd be a hell of an upgrade!

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I am definitely interested. Sucks that you won't release details .. now we all get to see your cool n810 with 32GB and we're still stuck with nothing =-(.
Hopefully this comes available soon. |

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I don't have an N810 yet, but this is a feature that I would be interested in--I've been holding off getting an N810, thinking that the Gigabyte M528 MID might be coming out, but I'm getting tired of waiting. (I understand about not giving too much detail if you're applying for a patent.)

Does this mean that the form factor will change? Will it affect the way the N810 is attached to the vehicle mount?

I'm in!!! I definitely appreciate a true craftsman that only wants to reveal the whole package when it is finished!! Can't wait for the final result.

Just think for the next 2 years at least you will never need to wait for memory chip releases unless it's a 64Gb SD card I do not use the current holder due to the way it must be forced in it. I also do not like the way it rub the top section of the tablet. It will ware the tablet with excess use so I would like to re-design it anyway. Thanks |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Yes. Interested. Can you give a ball park price? $10, $50, $100, $200...
|
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I've planned on skipping the N810 for just that reason! So I am interested. And if I want for the N900 and they fail to provide full SD (hopefully two!) for it, will you do the same for the N900?
|
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I am interested also!

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I must be missing something. I really don't understand what's being discussed here. How can an adapter overcome the memory limitation? Isn't that a current limit of addressable memory? What would this adapter look like? Wouldn't the memory card form factor still be MiniSD?
Maybe alzheimers is setting in, because as a former electronics designer and tech (and especially N800 QA engineer) I feel I should get this right off (as others have), but it makes absolutely no sense to me... :( |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I Don't think it's a memory cap that is the problem Tex..
Just like the N800 only advertised like 8 or 16GB i think but when 32GB came out they were still usable because they use the same SDHC technology.. The N810 can "read" SD cards all the way to however big they will make them in SDHC.. it just doesn't have the hardware to insert the full size SD into.. (at least this is my understanding) Now how he Shrunk an SD card to fit it into the mini slot is beyond me.... Just like, for example, an external SD card reader reads just fine in an N810.. if you find some manner of hack that allows you to jam a full size SD into the N810 without killing it I imagine it'd read like any other card. *shrug* |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
In this case it is a physical limitation... Right now there are no Mini SD cards with a capacity greater than 8gb. So, this solution would allow us to use full size SD cards, which are available in 32gb sizes..
|
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I'd really love to see how he's pulling that off without voiding the warranty... that's where a lot of my confusion is coming from.
And if I recall correctly there were issues at one point with the N800 being able to read the larger cards... |

If you don't want to disassemble the card to fit under standard battery cover you need cover with extra more space (at least near minisd slot). Also instead of real wires maybe one can get that flat cable similar to those used for connecting LCDs (not sure about proper name). The crack between minisd slot door and cover could be enough for it to get mmc signals under cover. EDIT: According to wikipedia such cable is called Flexible flat cable or FFC or FPC (flexible printed cable). Any place where I can buy few centimeters with 9 wires inside? |

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Everyone
Why all the speculation I just need to know who wants one? Read all of this thread and you will understand. The N810 can read anycard the N800 can read. So far as you can see 32GB is no problem. I am making a new battery cover and the full size SD card fit under that cover with no problem and you do not see any wires. The cover is less then 5mm thick. For another version there is no cover, it is for those who alreads have extended covers. While you all are speculating on how I am doing it think about this. As I currently see it barring any unforeseen problems, if I wanted to I can add many features to the tablet in addition to the full size SD card. I can also connect to the USB port with the same parts I am making for the SD card. There will also be no wires showing to the built in micro USB connector. I have been thinking of the possible features to add? Tilt sensor Built-in flash drive 8GB to 32GB or more IR receiver RF Receiver A2DP transmitter Anything that can currently connect to the USB port and be recognized by the N810 (available drivers) is possible I have been spending many hours thinking about this and it can be extended but I only have the money to do the full size SD adapter for now. I will make additional feature add-ons later Thanks all |

Actually, I have tried a variety of SD cards in 2 different card readers attached to my n810 via the USB-control/FF usb attachment method. I can't get any card to be read or even recognized. (other USB devices connect fine with this setup though). Anyone actually had success with a SD card reader in their n810?? |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I am interested in the adapter as well. Would you give an estimate of the cost(20s, 40s, 60s ....?).
thanks |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Fanoush,
In the UK flat cable can be bought from Farnell and RS components. Farnell do a tyco flexstrip that has a max thickness of 0.63mm but if you are building something like craves1 then individual insulated wires about as fine as human hair are quite common. |

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Tilt sensor would be very nice :-)
Depends on price but I'm definitely interested in slightly thicker cover with sd/mmc and usb interface under cover. And also just in the SD/MMC cable alone for usage with normal cover (I hope you don't plan to attach SD card via USB too). |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
craves1,
couple of points about your extension. Is the memory upgrade going to connect via the usb or via the MMC slot? if you do extend via the usb, is it feasible to do so without interupting the kickstand? is it feasible to add a passthrough usb connector onto the base so we don't lose the functionality? I think people are clamouring for tilt sensors even more than extra memory. It sounds good whichever way you manage it. All the best with your venture. |

You would not loose the kick stand in any way. I know how to make it so you do not loose the connection to the external USB connector when it is needed. Thanks |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
This is making me wonder if the four test points on the left side underneath the battery cover are usb lines. IIRC the 770 had serial lines under the battery door.
|
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
gultig, there are apparantly 2 kinds of pins on the underbelly of the n810
http://www.bu3sch.de/n810.php there is an actual serial port and an additional usb port. |
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
usb is there for all tablets but it is not additional port it is the same port duplicated
|
Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
Mmmmm...personally $60 for the adapter alone maybe a bit steep. Iam sure you find a bunch of people on here that would spend that, but for a wider appeal, I would think that $30-50max would be easier to swallow (when you consider the cost of memory on top of that. I am not suggesting that this isn't reasonable for a high quality adapter (which it sounds like you are creating) just giving you my thoughts on what would be worth it for me.

Re: 32GB SD adapter For N810
I still don't know what to expect, I do not want to open up my tablet.
If you wont provide pictures what about a diagram. |
