N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

My N800's screen just started constantly rolling, like when old TVs had issues with the vertical hold adjustment (hopefully at least some of you are old enough to remember that!!!). The rolling screen image makes is fairly difficult to use! There's a noticable jitter to the screen image also.

Has anyone experienced this type of behaviour? Any ideas as to how to fix it? The tablet is right around the 1-yr mark - I'll have to check if the warranty still applies...

Appreciate any thougts you might have.

Thanks,
TJ

Funny (well, actually it isn't), not the same problem (a different one), but the same 1 year mark.
Sorry, I don't know the cause for either, though I'm pretty sure I'm out of warranty (both for the age of the device and because the us warranty doesn't apply in the eu).

I have the EXACT same problem that started about a couple months ago. The unit will be a year old in December.

Have you found a solution? I went through Nokia tech support, and after a firmware upgrade, I was advised to send it in for repair. I haven't done that yet as I hope to be able to drop off the unit in person but haven't had time.

Exact same problem here, also after one year.
Reflashing didn't help.
I have ordered a replacement screen, hoping the fault lies with the screen and not with the motherboard.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Holy, I hope it is NOT the motherboard. I went through hell and back with the tablet and I don't want to abandon it (at least not until the next one is released :D)

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I have an interesting observation. If I open a terminal, without virtual keyboard pops-up, the screen jitters. But as long as the virtual keyboard pops up, the screen is stable (no jittering). Next I open matchbox-keyboard, and the same happens. As long as the keyboard is active (on screen), the screen is stable. But as long as I closes it, it jitters.

This leads me to think it is not purely a hardware problem (though I have not seen this in past 9 months). Hopefully there is some software fix possible (I will try to see if I can make some keyboard hidden but active).

Edit 1: Keyboard cannot be made hidden. More observations: some apps have no jitter problem in full screen mode (e.g. terminal, stardict, eggtimer etc), but not in normal screen mode. 2 apps appear to have no jitter problem even in normal screen mode (galculator and maemopad+). FBreader has jitter problem even in full screen mode. Any system expert can help to fix this with software patch please?!

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I guess it's good that I'm not the only one with this issue. Since my original post, VISA has pulled through for me with their purchase protection plan. Even though the Nokia warranty had expired, the credit card plan extended it for another year. Thus, I got the original purchase price of the N800 credited toward the purchase of an N810!

However, the N800 is still sitting here and would be great if it could be fixed. Thanks to everyone who is trying to find a solution to this issue!

nemner Thank You for your post about VISA protection plan, you see I have the same problem with my N800 that I had bought with American Express ($399.99 on FEB 09 07). I had given up on it until I read your post which made me look to see if my N800 was also covered, the coverage had expired but American Express still honored it because the screen problem had started while it was covered!! :D This forum has saved me some $$$$$$. Thanks again nemner

I have not ever seen a device with this problem myself, so everything in this post is just a random guess. It probably could be that it is some kind of hardware failure related to partial screen updates (applications use partial screen updates when run in 'normal' mode). A workaround would be to modify X server not to use partial screen updates and always update full screen. This workaround will reduce performance, especially for video, but probably can make device usable for a bit longer.

I would recommend to try installing Mer on problematic devices and check if this problem can be seen in it. Because Mer currently uses a new version of X server which is missing lots of performance optimizations (it only uses automatic fullscreen updates), it may not suffer from this supposedly hardware fault.

But this is only a guess, I may be completely wrong.

Did replacing the screen work for anyone or was it a mainboard problem? I just got this and am presently fighting with Mastercard to get the warranty service, if they fall through I'd like to know if a screen replacement will solve the problem

Sorry about your luck joining this unfortunate club! I didn't try any further fixes since VISA covered,me for a replacement N810.

The N800 is still sitting in a 'someday I'll get around tuit' pile, so interested in hearing about any other fixes...good luck!

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

In my case replacing the screen fixed it, but yours may be a different problem.
Today I wouldn't replace the screen, I'd simply buy a moses smartq 5 (that costs less than an n800 replacement screen).

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

When the problem occured on mine 5 months after purchase, it was sent into Nokia for a repair under the warrenty. They could/would not repair the unit and instead sent me a refurbished N800. Within 30 days had to replace the battery. All's well now.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I guess this problem is still open. Mine just started the same scrolling effect like and old TV set that has a bad vertical hold problem. I'm no longer cover by warranty but I'm still hoping someone will come up with a solution I can implement. I miss my N800 a lot but would probably resit buying an other Nokia device after this.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Mine is doing it, too. A year to the month since I got it. No warranty.
That really sucks because I liked the n800. But now that I see that this is a common problem with this device I will NOT be replacing it just to have it fail again. I can't afford to buy anything right now so I guess I'll be getting my pocketpc out of the drawer and charging it up again. The browser on it sucks. The speaker on it sucks. But at least it can do PIM, internet radio, ebooks, and audible stuff which is what I do most anyway. Not to mention accessing my orb stuff. Say what you want about my old pocketpc, but at least it's still working! I even have an old Ipaq 3630 that STILL WORKS.

BTW, at least I can still use the n800 on the nightstand as an internet radio. I just leave canola running all the time. Set the display to black out right away. Because it seems the screen is ok for a few seconds when you first wake up the screen. At least long enough to select my station.

Other than that. It's now useless. What a shame!

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

my guess is that the LCD cable is faulty or loose inside; perhaps the ground pin is detached, and the data lines are floating.

Once sign for this is that different screen patterns can make the problem worse according to the average voltage on the data lines which makes them float/drift to a different voltage and means the sync or clock will trigger or not

just a hunch.

I've seen this sort of behaviour on my zaurus 6000 when I don't connect the LCD cable correctly.

There are photo journals around of dismantling the 800, so I would carefully follow one and carefully clean any connectors and reinsert cables to try and cure this

And now it's my turn. Luckily the N800 is now mostly employed as an alarm clock, and so the trying to hit a rolling alarm stop button is actually something of an improvement. :-)

It's kinda shocking though that Nokia lousy hardware can't survive the rigours of sitting undisturbed on a bedside table without falling apart. I was almost able to understand the touch-screen of my heavily used N810 failing, but this case is something else.

Meego buy my next hardware from someone other than Nokia.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Mine just started to happen a few days ago, I turned it off, took out the battery, rebooted, then it would be Okay for after 30 minutes, then happen again. So I think this is it, after my 770 and now my N800, this is the end of maemo for me.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Since yesterday I have the jittering problem.
This jitter was stronger with black background and white foreground, for example with N800 off and charging or with the security numeric pad logon.

However, I managed to login and the desktop was displayed without jittering even I work with some apps, afterwards I turned off the device and the jittering problem came alive.

I'll check the symptoms with more time

I'm sorry to say that your screen is dying :(
I think it's almost impossible to find a replacement screen now.
The one I replaced 3 years ago is still working fine, though I don't use the tablet very much nowadays.

I hope to find which is the wrong electronic component, and replace it.
I will disassemble the N800 in a short time and I will see with more detail.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I just fixed mine. There is nothing to do with the cable, just the LCD screen. I got a cheap used one from ebay, took out the LCD screen from it and put it back to my old one. Now, everything is working again. I put a new screen protector on it, and my N800 looks like a brand new one. I am so happy to get my N800 back, even though I have an Android Tablet and an Ipod touch 4. The N800 feels so solid in my hand.
I really hope more people can develop the programs for 2008OS, but I doubt it.

Where on Ebay did you find a cheap screen?

racky 2011-10-11 02:39

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Not just the screen, a whole used N800. You don't need one with nice case or any other accessories. Just be sure the screen is nice and working.
And the disassembly is very easy, just follow the video on youtube.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

If the screen was in good shape, then most likely the whole tablet was also in good condition.

So what was the point of switching the screens?

racky 2011-10-11 03:35

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Not always, I take good care of my N800, so no big scratch on my case. But the one I got from ebay, the case has some scratches, and the speaker is not working. But it has a screen protector on the screen from day one, so the screen is at perfect condition.

paulm64 2012-02-02 13:49

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

Hi everyone. Been away for a few years after my n800's screen started rolling, and I got rid of it. I used a ipod touch for a few yeares but the speakers sucked! But now, I just ordered an N800 off of ebay for about $40. I'm HOPING that if it has lasted this long it will be ok. I loved my old n800 because of the speakers, mp3, fm radio, internet radio, web browsing, and rss, which is mostly what I used it for. I bought two 32gb sd cards for about $54. So I have a nice little 64GB internet tablet/media player for under $100!
My question is, do ALL of these screens fail? Or am I probably gonna be ok now? Also, I think the screen failures have to do with heat. I remember that my old one would get pretty hot in the upper right corner near the screen when I would be charging it up from a low battery and using it at the same time. But it stayed cooler if I let it charge when it was in standby. Once the battery is charged up, I could use it while plugged in without the heat problem. It seems to mainly happen when charging the battery from low battery state AND using it (having the screen on) at the same time. Another thought occurs to me. I'm wondering if I should take it apart and drill some little vent holes near the 'hotspot' to help keep it cool and protect the screen. What do you guys think?

Paul.

speculatrix 2012-02-02 21:39

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I don't recall mine getting really hot; can get somewhat warm charging the battery, but not in the corners, and not especially hot when its in use and on charge.

I haven't used mine much since I bought my Fujitsu U820 except when I flashed it with nitdroid, and after a few weeks reverted.

At some point I am to create a(some) simplified health view(s) of our monitoring system at work which will fit nicely in an 800x600 screen, so I can make use of my 770 and n800 again.

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I just thought of something. They're getting so cheap now, I should just buy a few spares. Just start buying the $40 dollar ones as they show up and then throw them in a drawer. LOL! Who cares if the screen goes bad! Just pull out a spare! I know there's newer better ones out but I really like the n800. I like the speakers and the two sd card slots! Especially since the 32GB SDHC cards are getting so cheap, too!

Well, mine did get pretty warm in the upper right corner area. Mostly on the back but it seemed to be in the general area that would be behind the upper right corner of the LCD. If it got pretty warm on the outside I can only assume it was much hotter inside.

Hey Paul.

If you find any more, I'll buy one from you. :)

I had a brand new back up just waiting to be used until my neighbor decided to take it for himself, including my pocket pc with all of my med apps after raiding my fridge of beer.

On top of that, I previously let him borrow hundreds to help him and his 7 member family.

Strange, all I really care about is wanting my N800 back... well that and maybe some of my beers.

I absolutely adore this thing. http://www.christianforums.com/image...nion/flat4.gif

Just keep an eye on eBay. That's what I did. Seems like most of them go for like around $80-$100. If you're patient, you'll find a cheap one on there. Good luck! :)

Re: N800 Screen Rolling and Jitter

I have the same problem than others.

Is there N800 schematic or diagrams containing the electronic components?

I opened my device, checked the wires and components but I still having the issue.
Someone said that the issue is located in the screen, in that case there are few components there but two are integrated circuits, anyway even if the component were detected to solder there is quite difficult.

In my opinion we should try to find the screen technical details and manufacturer, and try to find it directly in electronic components shops.
