Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

So "OS2008 Feature Upgrade" came up on in "updates" on my N810 Diablo today. So I blindly told it to go for it.

Bad idea, I got an error about the Browser Daemon could not be found in the archives or something like that. So I thought I would reboot and see what happens.

Worse idea, Now the N810 just cycles a half bootup sequence, and reboots again and again.

I seem to remember having this problem once before and re-flashing wiped everything clean and made it boot again (which was a pain of course because I lost everying on the root file system).

This time, however I get an error:"
Finishing flashing ... Sending request 0x52 failed!
Unable to get error strings: Connection timed out.
"

(Oh yea, was using the Linux flasher, which had worked twice before, and on the exact same RX44... Image that I had used previously)

So still my N810 will not successfully boot.

So now what do I do? Anyone know what the "Cold Flash" is?

It would sure be nice to know how to get into a single user shell or some other "safe-boot" mode WHEN certain updates corrupt the OS like this. Maybe I should rebuild it as a dual boot (assuming I ever get it working again) so I can use one OS to repair the other.

Here exactly the same :(
Any idea?

Guys, providing the EXACT command that you used for flashing the device would be very helpful! ;-)

and "or something like that." comments also don't help me to reproduce the issue... :-(

My N800 Diablo took the Feature Upgrade (33 MB download) and worked fine after the reboot.

Problem might be confined to the N810?

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

Exactly the same thing here. N810, took the upgrade (33mb) and now it won't load at all. Nokia screen and the blue bar gets to about 90% and restarts.

If anyone has any thoughts at all I would be enormously grateful.

My N810 took the update without problem, only the same bugs still exist. Would be GREAT if they finally fixed the Modest E-mail issues. Maybe for Christmas, 2010. I just LOVE when it silently randomly crashes and I have to reboot to get it to open

Advice for next time, wait a few days before you do a major update. (not being sarcastic) If you search the forum there are alot of people that have been having the same problem since the update came out a few days ago. I've been watching, seems alot of people have had to flash thier devices to get them running again.

Honestly, this was the first time I didn't check the forums first. :o

I sort of assumed the update was minor and told it to proceed. Silly man!

If I can get it working again, I guess I'll write this one off as a lesson learned. Thanks anyhow.

And what would be the difference? Eventually, you will have to upgrade and the problem will be there anyway.

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

Technically no. Quite a few people choose not to update. Quite a few are running chinook. Nobody holds a gun to your head and says "update or die".
And the problem wouldn't still be there. My point was, if there is a bug in the update, you will find out by reading what other people have had to say. And they can fix it, and you can update say in a week or two after everything has calmed down.
I haven't updated because I wanted to see if there was a problem with the update. And obviously there is. I do the same thing with my windows machine. I wait to see if there are any issues that might come up with the update then I choose to do it.

Tapping the "More new email" notification now launches Modest.

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

My main point in starting this thread was to ask how to go about fixing this kind of thing, especially since it is the second time this has happened to me and I'm tired of rebuilding my NIT.

I am a person that has been running Debian "Unstable" on his desktop PC for many years and updates on it sometimes go bad too. The difference is that I have always been able to go in and fix it (ususally by just adding a few extra flags to the package manager commands). I would love to come up with a proceedure for doing the same with the NIT so I won't be so terrified everytime I do an update.

Is there some kind of better boot loader where I have the option to bail out of the normal boot procedure when it fails? How do I fix my NIT now or is it a doorstop?

Oh and as far as the upgrade command, it was the 33mb "Feature upgrade" that I just told the application manager to install. The command I used to attempt to re-flash the NIT, which was exactly what I used last time with exactly the same files and it worked was:

./flash -r RX=44_DIABLO_4.2008-23-14_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

It is possible that I flashed it from a different Linux last time however. My Desktop dual-boots into either Slackware or Debian and I'm unsure which one I used. I tried it from Debian this time, but then I also tried it from Slack with exactly the same result. Also both of these Linux installs have had many updates too over that time but did appear to be doing USB related things just fine.

My desktop also has W2k on it (I lied about "dual-boot", it actually "triple-boots") so I can try the Windows flasher too, but I suspect it would have the same result, any comments?

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

Just Re-Flashed and it's fine now.

Re-installing the programs only took me about half an hour, so it wasn't so painful. :)

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

@wartstew

I was having the same problem that flashing didn't work. However, it turned out that I was using the wrong command, and from what I can tell, you are too. The command should be:

./flash -F RX=44_DIABLO_4.2008-23-14_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

After I used that, it flashed fine. Hope that works for you.

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

You were right! Now where did I find those instructions again? I guess I need to hunt them down and see if they can be changed.

So now for part II, trying to come up with a system by which I can fix non-booting problems without having to do a full re-flash which is a real pain to re-install and configure all those apps!

Hi I have just experienced the same problem you were having. My Nokia N810 just reboots and reboots after upgrading. I am not familiar with these thing and I hope you could help me by sending an instructions on how to reflash my Nokia.

Where do I start.

Thanks in advance.

To summarize the other 200+ message thread on this issue:

There seems to be an odd problem with the documentation package that is part of this update. If you have removed all of your User Guides from the Documents folder on the built in memory, the scripts that run when the package is installed fails halting the installation half way and leaving your tablet desktop in an unstable state.

The way to recover is to just fall back to the old firmware flashing method, do the two pending SSUs (unless there is already an updated firmware out ... there wasn't when I ran into this issue) and then restore from backup using the backup utility (you did do a backup when prompted to before the SSU, didn't you?).

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

There are several causes to failure.
See this post: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...&postcount=304
My advice:
Before applying a SSU make a flashable full backup of the system (see http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...8&postcount=31) and save it on your PC.
Better advice:
Run the system from mmc, you can make a full backup trivially with tar, and restore it by simply unpacking the tar.gz file. You do not need to install bootmenu to boot from mmc, just configure the tablet with "flasher-3 --set-root-device mmc"

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

maacruz could you provide real links to the posts?

My problem with N800 is different but looking similar. After feature update bootmenu has disappeared as usual. After reinstalling bootmenu my NIT boots from internal flash only. When I try to boot from mmc it passes bootsplash till gauge is full 100% and hangs.

Opps, I'm sorry. I did cut and paste the url and it seems it wasn't the post url.

Re: Help: 2008 feature upgrade = DEATH!

This update really screwed my N800. I had the same problem with the reoccuring loop where the status bar reached about 80% and then it restarted again. I tried doing the manual flashing but was not able to do so. The install wizard was able to download the software but not update my device. It said to check the USB cable. I have done the same process in the past many times using the same one with no problem. I tried the process again and the USB logo on the top right corner was not showing up as it should when flashing. I tried time and time again with no luck. Right now the device won't even turn on. I charged the battery again last night and it still didn't turn on this morning. I don't know what else to do.

Any comments/suggestions from anyone?

Thank you.
