[Debian] Problems installing Deblet

I downloaded the Diablo deblet installer and have been trying to setup debian on my N810s internal card.

Installing the bootmenu worked fine and the deblet installer goes through all it's setup options without any issues. It's starts installing packages (I'm doing to the LXDE install) but after setting up xml-core it fails with:

Code:

ch# ['chroot', '/mnt/deblet', 'dpkg-reconfigure', 'console-data']
Package 'console-data' is not installed and no info is avaliable
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: console-data is not installed
Chroot command failed: ['chroot', '/mnt/deblet', 'dpkg-reconfigure', 'console-data']
Cleaning up after our md5sum
Press enter to close window

I tried a basic X install and it failed with a similar message.

Anyone know how to get this working?

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Thanks for the bug report, did you use the GTK or the other setting? If so, try the Dialog one for now. It seems like console-data isn't an dependancy anymore in lenny. I'll look into it.

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Ok. I used the GTK setting, so I'll try it again with Dialog and let you know what happens.

Thanks

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Ok, now it won't boot :D

The installer worked fine (after using Dialog) and the bootmenu reflashed, but when I choose "Deblet on External-MMC-p2" it shows a booting from message for a fraction of a second and then switches to:

Starting linuxrc from deblet-External-MMC-p2 (mmcblk0p2 ext2)...

for about 30 seconds, then the screen gets some off vertical corruption and the tablet reboots back to the bootmenu.

Any ideas?

Try editing /etc/bootmenu.d/ item to say INT_CARD instead, and run refresh_bootmenu.d.

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I have a n810 and I had the same problem as you with the GTK error. I got it to install using the dialog option, and now mine doesn't boot into deblet either, in just the same way as yours doesn't boot. My configuration:

LXDE install
lenny
dialog (not gtk)
partitioned external mmc: 6GB ext3, 128MB swap, 2GB unused

blueterrance 2008-10-03 08:46

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Ah hah, I got it to boot by editing the /etc/bootmenu.d/ item

It said "INT_CARD" in there when really it was on the external card, so I changed it to EXT_CARD and now it boots.

Stskeeps 2008-10-03 08:46

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Yeah, - sorry if you're running into bad problems right now, the one on page is the one about to be released, so I appreciate any effort in trying to find out what's wrong :)

When reporting, I need your bootmenu version (dpkg -l bootmenu), installer version (dpkg -l deblet-installer), and your /etc/bootmenu.d items

blueterrance 2008-10-03 09:11

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Ok I'll give you that info sometime after I reboot. I set my root password during the install but now that I'm in LXDE it won't work when I try sudo or su.

qurgh 2008-10-03 13:18

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I switched the EXT_CARD for INT_CARD in the bootmenu.d item file and Debian started right up.

I have a couple of issues/suggestions

Add the created user to the sudoers file during setup
Any chance of a keymap guide? (ie how do I do | or tab)
Ctrl+key shortcuts don't work in nano
Is there a way to make the Fn key on the N810 sticky?

Any chance of using the information here to boot the tablet quicker?

fatalsaint 2008-10-03 13:51

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I've always preferred my xmodmap (in sig) to the one provided with deblet..

You could take a look at that. | is FN+> and ESC is FN+< .. Tab is FN+Backspace..

I dont know if Skeeps every took the fix for the Control Characters but if you are having those problems my xmodmap should fix those too (ctrl+c won't quit terminal commands, ctrl+c doesn't copy, etc.)

Stskeeps 2008-10-03 14:07

fatalsaint: feel free to svn checkout http://trac.tspre.org/svn/deblet/trunk/packages/main/n810-slideout-kbd-xmodmap/ and upload a fixed package+source (dpkg-buildpackage), i don't have a n810 so can't test it myself..

qurgh 2008-10-03 14:12

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Thanks fatalsaint, that xmodmap looks like it'll fix things.

Any idea what the LXDE startup script it called so I can get this to auto run on startup?

Skeeps - Will do soon as I get some time. My blasted wife got me stuck reading the Eragon (Inheritance) series and thus I have done nothing but read books for over a week.

I so hate reading for this very reason....

I've noticed that Maemo will sometimes capitalize the first letter of the root password during installation. If yours started with a letter, try it in uppercase and see if it works.

blueterrance 2008-10-08 21:36

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Yes I'm pretty sure that's what happened to my root password.

jiiv 2008-10-09 15:05

Re: Problems installing Deblet

OK. FYI, if you reset it from inside deblet it'll pay attention to whatever case you use, it's just the installer that gets confused sometimes.

Re: Problems installing Deblet

K i'm also having some trouble trying to install deblet KDE-environment full version, I installed the .deb in the deblet project website, and used penguinbait's advanced install tool to get some partitions in my internet card in my N800. I got two ext3 partitions with a swap partition and a FAT partition, each 3GB *2 ext3 and 1.5GB for FAT 500 MB for SWAP. I installed the LXDE environment on one ext3 and works fine, except for a warning: fake invoice.d called doing nothing poping up now and then, but the deblet works fine. Now i'm trying to get KDE environment and this is what i run into. It keeps looping constantly.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
nit-env-keblet3-full:
Depends: kicker-applets but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kate-plugins but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdepin-kresources but it is not installable
Depends: unrar but it is not installable
Depends: kdenetwork but it is not going to be installed

fatalsaint 2008-10-30 13:39

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I'm thinking that is because it is trying to install the KDE4 kicker/kate/etc instead of the KDE3.

I was worried something like that might happen having KDE3 and KDE4 packages in the same repository..

Stskeeps - think you can put the keblet3 packages to your repo and not add mine until after it is loaded?? Either that or I'll have to make a separate KDE4-only repository.

Thanks for testing it Classik.

Re: Problems installing Deblet

About 2 days ago, i was so in love with my new deblet-lxde installation, then i done something stupid when i was playing with it. (i "accidentally" removed some directory, that contained important system-files)

And now, i am VERY frustrated, i have failed installing deblet 7 times in a row!

First: apt-get update failed, because of some random error
Second: Installation almost finished, then apt-get failed to install something.
3rd & 4th: It failed to install/remove or whatever it does with libfam0 or FAM anyway.
5th & 6th: Debootstrapping failed when extracting.
Edit: 7th: apt-get fails perl

All these tries, with release lenny, 7th tyr was with sid.

Before the 6th try i uninstalled deblet-installer, and ran apt-get autoremove, both with --purge option (even with the fact that i believe the problem is not in stskeeps installer), rebooted and installed deblet-installer and rebooted again. I always run deblet-installer from clean flash, because i use maemo cloned to internal memory for everything else.

Does anybody know what is wrong?

I believe it is possible that all i have had is bad luck...

fatalsaint 2008-10-31 17:24

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Sid is newer than Lenny... you wouldn't "dist-upgrade" to lenny from sid.

Sid is the new Unstable.. Lenny is the new stable.

Are you totally reformatting/removing all directories before installing (on the destination card, not host OS)?

ETA: Also with 6 times you've been reading/writing that much data.. when was the last time you ran a good FSCK against the partition?

meizirkki 2008-10-31 17:40

Re: Problems installing Deblet

If i fail installation, i always reboot and format the partition (as suggested by installer) and try again.
7th try now going on...

Maybe i should run fsck, thanks :)

meizirkki 2008-10-31 17:49

Re: Problems installing Deblet

AGAIN.... :(

this time apt get fails to install perl

fsck does not find any errors

Re: Problems installing Deblet

8 times in a row, there HAS to be something wrong with my system!
:( :( :(
I have tried different mirrors.

Tomorrow i will reflash...

My signature... + when i am able to use it...

fatalsaint 2008-10-31 20:09

Re: Problems installing Deblet

Yeah.. I'd say if 8 times it might be the deblet installer but if it fails at a different time every time then I think it might be something with your setup.. which is odd.

Let us know how it goes and if you still have problems after the flash.

meizirkki 2008-10-31 20:28

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I believe it has nothing to do with the insttaller, because i reistalled it.
I am gonna try one more time...

Re: Problems installing Deblet

I'm not quite sure what I did, but I originally ran into the problem with the bootmenu.d using INT_CARD instead of EXT_CARD...fixed it and it booted. After it booted the one time, I restarted it and it now acts like it's going to start up putting out the info up to "pivot root and starting /sbin/...", but then just reboots into Maemo before the little deblet splash icon appears.

meizirkki 2008-11-01 10:48

Re: Problems installing Deblet

ookay, i flashed my tablet, installed feature upgrades, and deblet installer.

2 times debootstrap failed to download adduser.

3rd try after reflashing:

Debotstrapped with my ubuntubox, installed using TAR.GZ option in installer.

Guess what happened?

Error "out of disk space"

Installer extracted bootstrap.tar.gz on top of the maemo.

So i have to reflash again.

I don't even know how many times i have tried to install deblet, but who cares of it, no matter how long it takes, i WANT deblet!

meizirkki 2008-11-01 17:09

Re: Problems installing Deblet

FINALLY!!!
There was nothing wrong with the installer, exept that strange bootstrap.tar.gz error. ???

After flashing bootstrap failed many times because it was unable to download adduser.
So i done bootstrapping with my ubuntubox, and when deblet installer asked, i selected to mount, not format. And it installed with no problem. :) Maybe something is wrond with debootstrap package? My 32 bit ubuntu had no problem when bootstrapping from same server.

The most important thing for me is that my deblet finally works ;)

I have been thinking about trying to compile some ubuntu-mobile packages. Just for fun. I have never compiled anything. :D

neatojones 2008-11-01 21:51

Re: Problems installing Deblet

To me compiling is a piece of cake, it's getting the compiled programs that work turned into functional debs that gets me pulling out my hair. I don't know how these guys make so many...

KDE4 is now removed from the repo, KDE3 should work now. Report otherwise. Old packages can be found at packages.linuxniche.net.

Hello,

i have the same problem here like the user posted it on page 2.

I tried to install Deblet on my internal MMC (4GB) from different Mirrors. I tried to install the KDE environment. After ~1 hour there is the following loop:

E: Broken packages
Chroot command failed, repeating.: ['chroot', '/mnt/deblet', 'apt-get', '-d', 'install', '-y', '--force-yes', 'nit-env-keblet3-full']

Re: Problems installing Deblet

There can be multiple reasons for this, most likely because your internet connection broke mid-way or your mirror is bad, or Debian mirrors had a bad hair day..

I sadly cannot make debootstrap restart the downloading so ..

Re: Problems installing Deblet

ive tried again just now...different mirror but same story..now 5 packages are failing at configuring main system..

Re: Problems installing Deblet

i got this error too : debootstrapping failed
i think there are several parameters:
- size of destination partition
- size of download needed
- sized of installed environment
debian mirrors fail really not, its known to be stable !
(i'm 5 year old debianist)

i try for the 3rd time to install on 1,7 GB ext3 partition...
with "basic" environment...
is there any metapackage for lxde environment later installation?
