Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Check out the story here on CrunchGear:
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/10/02...tube-hands-on/ Note the modality in the touch-screen keyboard, and even the applications icon in the menu. Perhaps the phone business has been getting some inspiration from the tablet side? |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Gizmodo had this in their report: "It's almost exactly like what's found on Nokia's touchscreen internet tablets like the N810, which makes sense, since Nokia recently folded the tablet group in with the smartphone folks to help develop touch features for S60 v5."
Whoops, I missed that bit of news. Haven't been around here in a while. Feels good to be back. |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Engadget has an article shows a concept that looks like a cross between the Tube and the E90, that was shown as part of the Tube's webcast.
I'd buy that concept, if: 1) T-Mobile-USA 3G 2) GSM Voice, SMS/MMS 3) Maemo (with Android extensions and N-Gage support being nice add-ons) 4) S60 PIM apps ported to it (integrated contacts, calendar/todo/tasks, bookmarks) 4) standard 3.5mm headset jack 5) micro-USB with easy to select/change client/host/otg modes 6) SyncML for contacts, calendar/todo/tasks, bookmarks 7) decent portrait camera, with flash, and video support 8) would be nice: micro-DVI with DVI-I 9) obviously bluetooth (with DUN, PAN, HID, and BIP) and wifi (usable both as a joikuspot type access point, and as a client) I think that'd just about be the perfect tablet. |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
tablet folded into smartphone? must have missed that, as i have never read about it until now.
as for the engadget concept, that second image with the keyboard is just weird... |

Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
*sigh* it's exactly the look I'd want for a Maemo Phone :-}
|
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
To give a better explanation, look at the first image, then the second. Note that on the second the front buttons are visible. All communicators so far have been folding phones with one internal and one external screen. Unless this is a slider, and given how the keyboard is lined up with the rest, i find that unlikely, then its just weird.

Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
I read it as flipping out (at least) 180; when closed, the shiny flat keyboard is on the outside of the back, and presumably all input is discarded. When open, it flips up around flat, or hopefully farther...

Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
I see what you two are saying (I was just about to post what Benson said, in reply to tso). So, it's not exactly like the E90 (except with the tube on the face, instead of a numberpad faced phone).
Hm. Maybe. It is a little weird, you're right. But I think I'd still like it. But, yes, I'd want/need it to swing past 180 degrees, and I want it to have the feel of the E71's keyboard. |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Here is a video of the tube in action. It has accelerometer.
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Mobil...ews.asp?c=9282 When will our tablets have one?? |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
In the next one probably :) (That's just wild speculation of course)
|
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Does it have haptic feedback?
no one seems to mention that? |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Yea, it has haptic feedback
WARNING ::RANT:: You know, after the iPhone "revolutionized" the phone market with mobile safari (aka the First "true internet" in your pocket, which is a lie), I would expect all the phone manufacturers to put more effort into the browser of all phones. Yet, only specialized devices like the N810 have good browsers. What is SO difficult that a huge corporation, with a ton of experience, cannot make a good (not decent) browser? |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
simple, the others allow the install of opera mobile and similar...

Anyway, the artist of this concept picture didn't get it quite right - notice how the red and green buttons swap places between the two pictures. Roger. |

It was fujitsu, and the parts use bluetooth to talk to each other. |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
ok, i just watched the parts go *clonk* and hopped on over to some other news item...

Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Of the 5800: There is haptic feedback, just not region-specific. The entire device shakes/vibrates.
That pic Engadget "leaked" was from a Nokia presentation form wayyyyy many months ago. It really bad journalism on their part as it was stated then that it was not indicative of any device in development. The microB is much less enjoyable than S60 Web. Besides better resource allocation, the UI allows for viewing on both the nHD and QVGA resolutions. Plus, fit to width and FlashLite 3 support kinda makes microB look like the leftovers of another meal. This spoken from a guy who goes between an S60 and IT device like Congress has gone back and forth like celeberties and marriages ;) Lastly, the IT would do well to pull the Sensor Framework and most of the rest of the Web Framework services from S60 5th Edition. Besides being a nearly standard set of APIs for things like accelerometers and context-sensitive apps, it would also allow the IT to push the edges of its ability past just being an open source iPhone to something where this development community can really get innovative on the side of writing and making apps (slight dream, but some of you devs excite the mess outa me with how you think). |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
btw, i just noticed from a ui shot i found, that some of the icons looks like the default app and app manager icons of the IT ui...
|
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Nokia is moving towards using the same icons on all device, and the Ovi service. Its just a major branding effort on their part, not IT love (sorry)
|
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
not surprised ;)
these days, a solid brand seems more important then a solid product... |
Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
Mobile Burn has some new videos of the 5800 Tube. This is probably going to be my next phone. VGA screen + a fully mature s60 ecosystem of software sounds like a winner to me

Re: Nokia 5800 "Tube" released with some deja-vu
I'm already saving money for this phone. I can't wait for it to be released.
I don't know if it will replace my N810 because it lacks a physical keyboard and I use my tablet for IM a lot. |
