maemo mapper upgrade problem

i just installed the upgrade for maemo mapper (2.4.2-os2008) and now there is no icon to launch it...it isnt even listed as a selectable item im personal menu or launcher.

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

I had the same, uninstall Maemo Mapper and install the link mensioned in http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...d.php?p=232003

that is todays version, I actually installed --> https://garage.maemo.org/frs/downloa...2008_armel.deb which worked fine.

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

i did a complete uninstall...downloaded 2.4.2-os2008 and it wouldnt install correctly

skatebiker 2008-10-09 14:13

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

I did *this* link with 2.4.1:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/downloa...2008_armel.deb
which did work.
The 2.4.2 version didn't work either on my N810.

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

Same problem here. Looks like the maemo-mapper.desktop file is missing.

I downloaded the file above, extracted the files from the archive (the .deb) using 7-zip, copied the maemo-mapper.desktop file from \usr\share\applications\hildon\ in the archive to the same directory on the N800, and it's back in extras.

edit: spoke too soon; it's there, but it doesn't run from the menu. still looking for solution

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

Problem seems more than just a missing icon. I was outside for about 30 minutes and could not get a GPS lock. Watching the GPS status, only one black bar would appear (and very weak) . Uninstalled 2.4.2 and went back to 2.4.1 and everything is fine now.

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

I have the same problem with 2.4.2. If I uninstall it and reinstall 2.4.1 will I lose any maps or configurations.

markku 2008-10-09 18:31

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

No, I went also back to 2.4.1 version and my maps are all there like before that upgrade mess.

It's the post install script that fails:

dpkg: error processing maemo-mapper (--configure):

Thanks, markku, I'm back to good old 2.4.1

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

I was poking around and it looks like the maemo-mapper.desktop file as well as the com.gnuite.maemo_mapper.service file got installed in the root directory (/) rather than where it was supposed to go.

It might be fixed simply by putting those back there they belong.

/usr/share/applications/hildon/
and
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/

respectively.

That is what worked for me.

bluesubaru 2008-10-09 22:12

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

^^^^^ that will do it.

Thanks. You saved me.

But I will make a small correction:

maemo-mapper.desktop should go to /usr/share/applications/hildon/

and

com.gnuite.maemo_mapper.service should go to
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/

That's all.

Best if presented in user-dummy language. ;-)

open a X Terminal
and then copy the text below:

cd /
mv com.gnuite.maemo_mapper.service /usr/share/dbus-1/services/
mv maemo-mapper.desktop /usr/share/applications/hildon/

How come I am getting "Permission denied" when I am using the mv command exactly as you.

cp command is giving me a "cannot remove" ... "No such file or directory"

fpp 2008-10-10 05:51

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

Probably needs "sudo gainroot" first.

I don't think it's related to this update, but I can't seem to connect to the GPS anymore.... it keeps saying "searching for a GPS receiver" and the GPS icon in the status area keeps turning off and on.

1. Is your Bluetooth icon blue ? Otherwise your N810 has no BT connection with your GPS device (assumed you are using a BT GPS device). Otherwise re-pair the N810 with the GPS (control panel -> GPS -> Bluetooth).
2. Check the fix status on the GPS device itself (usually a green / orange led is blinking when there is a fix, otherwise continuously on).

You can also test the GPS fix status from the N810 control panel without using any application.

Yea, I had the same problem with the update. Once again, those "engineers" It's amazing how the theory of "TEST BEFORE you put it out there" escapes such super geniuses. Thanks for the link to the old version again, got it up again. I gotta learn to stop downloading updates. It's clear many of these people have the usual software developer mentality of "I'm a genius, everyone else is dumb"

Yeah it's amazing that one of those engineers out of good will creates Maemo Mapper and releases it free of charge for us to use. Absolute disgrace, how dare he forget a shortcut in one of the updates.

The fix was mentioned earlier, why not use it.

scott41 2008-10-10 14:43

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

Not sure if its related BUT: I did the update for maemo mapper and then uninstalled it, reinstalled the previous version (before I saw the fixes here) and now my application manager reports that I do not have any applications installed (but there are) and no updates are available. Not being a linux person, I have no idea how to go into the OS and fix it (yep, slave to the NIT GUI for now) and can not find a refresh/restore option for the application manager.

And any "super genius" on here that complains about free software needs to post that screen shot of the generous donation they gave to the software creators, write something of their own that will obviously come out perfect, or just unplug themselves from technology all together.

scott41 - You must use the latest Canola clean-up file to delete all traces of Canola on your unit. Then your can install the Beta 10 and then all the plug-ins.

Would you happen to have a link to that handy?

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

scott41 : in app manager, use the Tools menu and access the log file (journal). Lines starting with "E:" are errors. See if anything complains about duplicate repositories or failing to access one. Then empty the log, go back to Tools then to the repository manager. Disable any repo that generates errors or looks like a dupe. Then see if app manager is back to normal.

I had this yesterday, dunno if it's due to maemo mapper or Canola as I updated both at the same time, but the above did the trick.

Re: maemo mapper upgrade problem

Turns out going to a repo site and reloading the repos fixed the problem. woohoo! I did not get a chance to try looking for the duplicate repos or to try the canola cleaner thing (still not sure where that file is)

Thanks for the help. I assume someone will post when the Maemo Mapper update is fixed, correct? Its one of my favorite programs on the NIT.

I had exactly the same problem... and your trick disabling and enabling repositories fixed the problem. I was close to reflashing the tablet...

Davidsco27,

if that is your "constructive" way to help development, i suggest you simply stop using maemo mapper. No one forces you to use this software, you did not have to pay for it so just leave it.

Besides, i have also the problem that mapper is not installing correctly from the diablo repo. I checked and saw that someone postet the error-message. All that is left to do is wait for a bit longer and then install the next version and see if it works (i am without maemo mapper since i left chinook and i really like this app so waiting is not that easy but there are other apps to play with).

Software-development takes lot of time and testing also. You don't now if the developper has every maemo version at his disposal to test. For the diablo repo, it's the first appearance and it does not work. Can happen, there are more important problems in live than that so keep cool  or keep away ;)

Thank's MiBi

Oh yes one more thing: If you want to answer / argue like your last post, i hope you are a software developper so that you know what you are talking about and what it takes to make a program. I will not argue with an architect how to build a skyscraper if i don't have the necessary knowledge. Think about it like that: try to write a book with something like 300 pages. Now try to make no spelling error without the help of other people / electronic spelling correction (or however it is called in english).

Sorry to the thread-starter / participating people for being a bit of topic but i had to say it.

Now back to topic please.

I responded in kind to another board geek pumping his chest. I'm sorry, but I didn't realize by purchasing the device, it was my responsibility to "help development" perhaps that should've been posted on the box.

Like uhm, no. obviously you don't. I'm perfectly fine just being a user.
But I know that the developers are making great programs that you or I can use, and that they are bound to make mistakes every now or then,. can you really blame them? some of them are really complex programs, and a lot of time has been invested in them. And because of that it is that we can't go around complaining. Im really thankful, and if something stops working, then ask them to fix it, with the respect that the work they did deserves.

davidsco:

If you don't like Maemo Mapper, you really should sell or give away your tablet and start using one of the many great free gps programs you can get in Windows, because Maemo Mapper is one of the best programs the tablets have. You obviously either don't understand or don't appreciate that this program was created at no cost by a volunteer, and an incredibly hard-working volunteer.

How about you start programming and we insult you for your efforts?

and I had to hook up my little dreamGEAR miniKey keyboard to get the "_" character entered properly.

But maemo-mapper is working again, and contacted my Holux GPS with no problem, and in turn showed me my position in midtown Toronto with the usual accuracy.

Or you can change it to the special symbols keyboard (the icon for it is on the right most of the on screen keyboard).

Using the steps chelbos listed Maemo-Mapper works fine on Diablo. No worries.

Thanks everyone for helping to sort out this update problem.

I had the same problem, running on my 770 with OS2007HE. Updated to 2.5 and while my start icon was there it would not connect to my GPS receiver. The GPS and location boxes in Settings were grayed out. I couldn't even do a new GPS address scan.

Uninstalled and reinstalled 2.5 with no change.

Putting 2.4.2 didn't work either. Had to go back to 2.4.1 and all's back to normal.

I'm perfectly happy with that. Works great and I appreciate having the software. Thanks to gnuite. I expect a bit a flakiness with my hardware and the HE OS. Didn't try to update my N800 yet.
