IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
http://blogs.computerworld.com/call_...s_a_cell_phone
IMOVIO launched today a smaller alternative to a subnotebook -- much smaller. The new iKIT is about the size of a PDA from ten years ago, but has a QWERTY keyboard and connects to the Internet at 3G speeds via your cell phone or Wi-Fi. The $175 Linux-based system has a Webcam built in, as well as a range of applications, including Web browsing, e-mail and IM. It can connect to the Internet using a standard Wi-Fi connection, or it can use your cell phone's mobile broadband connection via Bluetooth. The company is currently pitching it to mobile network operators and retail stores. It's being compared to the ill-fated Palm Foleo. But the comparison doesn't work because the Foleo was Palm-phone only, didn't fit in a pocket and cost well over three times the price of the iKIT. Would YOU carry a second device (in addition to your cell phone) like this? http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites.../u125/ikit.jpg |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Mentioning 3G twice isn't necessary. So you can tether with it using BlueTooth. OK, good.
This is basically a minitop, perhaps competitor to NIT. What about the hardware? What kind of CPU? Etc... |

Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
funny how no image save the first one shows the things screen.
why? because its much smaller then the overall device. look at the one image showing the screen and you will notice a small logo towards the right edge. then have a playaround here: http://www.comsciences.com/applications.htm its really funny how the poking at the buttons in the flash makes the screen grow larger... if it had filled out the lid, i may have considered it. but as it seems to be a eeepc 701 boiled down to a pocketable size, forget it. |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
From everything I'm hearing about this device, you're MUCH better off getting a Pandora if that's the form factor you want. And, these days, even an N810 isn't much more expensive.
This thing, though, way underpowered. |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
So its basically a Sharp Zaurus clamshell...? ;)
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
if there just was a zaurus model out there with bluetooth and wifi at that price...
or a zaurus with bluetooth, period... |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Hmm, not clamshell, but some versions of SL6000 come with CF or even on-board WiFi/BT. My point was rather that it picks up where Zaurus left, and also that the CPU is not powerful (like the one in Zaurus). XScale PXA270, my Zaurus had that too. With Qtopia barely useful. Other apps are dog slow...
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Kernel is 2.4.x, that will be annoying for people at least some people wanting to add stuff.
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
The screen is way to small, browser is Opera Mini, Slow... Most smartphones can do more for less... Not to mention the Pandora....
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
I really want to like this, but there are way too many "gotchas." And 64MB is not enough RAM to have a real desktop-comparable web browser. Also no storage expansion? ouch. O_o
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Funny, Zaurus also had 2.4.x Linux kernel, and also had Opera Mini. :p
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
hmm, a zaurus conspiracy?
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
This device seems late to the party. Perhaps it was stuck on a sea container for a couple of years. The website doesn't show the screen size versus the bezel size.
|
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Looks like a trend, no ?
This one seems to have been stuck in a container on a desert island for even longer : http://gizmodo.com/5066342/pomera-di...-to-the-future |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
heh, at least they are trying...

Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
Ha. I think my old TRG Pro with fold out keyboard was more powerful.

Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
But what's the keyboard like?
I'm guessing the answer is "not much", considering how much effort has gone into NOT showing the keyboard in all the publicity photos. But if by some wild chance, the keyboard should be good enough for not-quite-touch typing, there are some among us who would be willing to tolerate some other shortcomings. |
Re: IMOVIO iKIT: $175 Linux-based system
The keyboard is like this http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites.../u125/ikit.jpg
Small keys, PDA-style, like the Zaurus. The N810 is far better, and has some archaic LEDs to light up (something Apple apparently believes they can patent; LOL!). |
