Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Got it working.
used cacao + microemulator. it works perfect on my mobile phone with 70 MHz cpu, but it is too slow on n810. could not wait anought to load it. scr: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/3125/scrwd8.png so, can it be cacao problem or i just need better j2me emulator? |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
What is cacao?
Are you sure you don't want the Mobile version? |

Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
I wonder what it's equivalent speed would be under the "Easy Debian" layer?
|
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Opera Mini for the N810 would be amazing. The speed of the thing is what makes it so great.

Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
This is great news. Any of the specialists here that can help?

Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
where did you get microemulator from?

i did not know about JamVM working in maemo. Can somebody create packages with JamVM, Jikes and MicroEmulator? I just don't have time to configure sdk enviroment. for running opera mini i used allready compiled microemulator from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=21993 , but it is too slow (maybe just becouse cacao) and can't be fullscreened. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
compiled jamvm and jikes for maemo and created packages.
could not get microemulator-maemo sources, cvs does not work (or i just don't understand how it should work). it is here: http://microemulator.cvs.sourceforge...icroemu-maemo/ but how to get it? |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
nevermind. got sources. packages will be ready in few hours.
any volunteers for testing? |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
can't build classpath 0.97 - looks it does not support jikes.
will try later with older version. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
I'm willing to test when you get it up and going.

If there were some way to run this in "standard" java, that would be cool. But it seems you need this extra JavaME emulation layer... On top of Java (we don't have any hardware Java accelleration), that's going to make this stupidly slow. I mean ssssslllllllooooowwww Use Epiphany (Gecko) or Midori (Webkit) if you want a fast browser on the tablet and you don't mind using Easy Debian to get it. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Just for fun, I ran http://demo.opera-mini.net/demo.html in the Debian Kazehakase browser.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/...28edf19c_o.png Opera Mini, running in J2ME, running in Sun Open JDK, running in Kazehakase, running in Debian, running in Maemo. Sweet! :D :D It isn't the fastest way to browse the net. :p ;) Can someone explain how to download and get the microemu layer to run from the standard Debian command prompt? Pretend you were going to run it on a regular Linux computer running Sun Java. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Ok, so I figured it out how to do it through Easy Debian. And it isn't actually that slow. But with so many good browsers for the tablet, I'm not sure why I'd use Opera Mini, except just to see what it's like.
I will gladly expand on any of these steps if anyone shows any interest. (0. Install and download Easy Debian stuff) 1. Download MicroEmulator, untar somewhere (I put it in /media/mmc2/java/microemulator) 2. Download Opera Mini, put it somewhere (I put it in /media/mmc2/java) 3. Start Easy Debian as user by running "debbie" from the command line. 4. Not sure if this is necessary, but I did this: Code:
CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/media/mmc2/java/microemulator Code:
cd /media/mmc2/java/microemulator 7. Browse the web on Opera Mini. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3281/...65e9aba4_o.png EDIT: Problems that I've found: 1. Really doesn't want to be full-screened. Even the Easy Debian fullscreen hack doesn't fullscreen it; I had to run "wmctrl -a microemulator -b toggle, fullscreen" to get it to go fullscreen. 2. Text entry is weird. I couldn't get it to do the _ character, you can't highlight text, and it can be tricky to figure out where your cursor is. 3. Password fields are not obscured. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
The (allegedly) awesome thing about Opera mini is not just basic proxy stuff like recompressing images, etc., but also dishing up the whole page, images, etc. through one connection to beat latency. So for those with high-latency mobile connections, it could help.
Of course, there's disadvantages too, both technical and privacy. I'm likely to give it a shot, though. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Wheeee, thanks. I like Opera Mini, after using it on my phone.
Though, I prefer the opera mini mod though: http://opera-mini.ru/last.html A version older (3 compared to 4) but vastly superior imo. |
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
This is painful. Possible, but painful. Now does this run MIDP apps? As in Google apps?
|
Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
Can anybody tell me how to type texts in edit boxes? When I enter text and click "ok" button, nothing happens. I can't even return back to the previous page. It's the end of the world!

Re: Opera Mini 4.1 for Maemo
zabishah20: This thread was for the Nokia N800 and N810. They had a custom kernel and a widget for rotating the screen. If you wanted to force-rotate the N900's screen, I guess you could use xrandr...
