Yes, well like qwerty, I help myself, probably more often than other people help me. Seems fair to include yourself :)

Re: Poll: Who has been the most helpful to you? Top 10 Posters (multiple choice)

I independently decided I help myself (voted before looking at the results); then again, since I voted myself as having the biggest ego, consistency requires it... :D

Interesting to compare the results of this with the ego poll, perhaps it will confirm whether those egos are justified. ;)

Tough to choose. Gnuite should rank up there but he isn't one of the choices on the list.

There is no question that Gnuite should be up there as well as Jaffa and Bundyo (for the crossover office link yesterday alone) as well as many others.

But if I chose to include certain people others would feel left out. So I chose top 10 posters, Bundyo is #11. But I can only make 10 poll options. So I hope you all understand, this is by no means the top 10 helpful people at ITT. It's more trying to rank the most helpful from the top 10 chatty posters.... Post for post who's the most helpful...

Academy award style, there should be several categories. Someone who writes or ports a helpful program is doing something very different than someone who explains yet again how to use one.

I have my own private list of heroes. Ideally, there would be a virtual stadium roof, and the uniforms of the best would be nailed there and their numbers retired, as in basketball.

I voted, but I needed to keep with my "humble" appearance, so I didn't vote for myself.

Thanks so much to those of you who did vote for me, though! I'm a rich man; just not with money.

I'll pop his cherry. I read my share of daily tech news, but I probably wouldn't have ventured over to the Pandora site as early as I did if it weren't for KJ. Although I didn't pre-order, I consider it to be a significant project: a further step towards hardware and software freedom and independence.

So there.

I had to. While others on the list have assisted me with tablety issues, you helped this country boy not only understand the basic workings of public transportation, but understand the basic workings of public transportation in German. Without your help, I'd likely still be lost somewhere in Berlin, probably having not yet even reached the Ibis.

Strangely, in real life you conspicuously lack a big, lime green "Thanks!" button, so voting for you here will have to do.

After Berlin qole has his own real life glass of lime green Thanks every night (or has it all gone now?)

Actually, since Berlin he has been slurring his words more than usual ;)

This was tough because everyone on the list has helped me at one time or another--even KJ and TR! :D

Although I chose the top three based on the few interactions in the past couple of years that this old brain can actually recall, I want to say THANKS to all of you! A phone is just a phone, but the IT comes with a community!:)

Most definitely a compliment! Surely you recall the dilemma you helped me solve: I have an N810 but not the old cat!;)

Seriously, you are one of the reasons I continue to visit the forums! I've read of tribulations in another thread and I certainly wish you luck.

I hope you'll continue to harass me and the rest of the group here.

The sad thing about this poll is that it's so timebound, to the point where the contributions of TA-t3 and Milhouse are so diminished...

qole 2008-11-24 20:23

Re: Poll: Who has been the most helpful to you? Top 10 Posters (multiple choice)

I agree with you, Texrat. Do you know why Milhouse no longer contributes? He hasn't posted since January 2008...

I still use a highly modified version of his OS cloning script.

Aha. I found it, in his own words (Feb 15 2008):

Quote:

Recently I have begun to disengage myself from this project by spending far less time reading and helping out on ITT (I haven't visited for over a week, and don't intend to any time soon) and the mailing lists.

I can't avoid the impression that this project is fatally holed below the waterline, and the continued lack of any significant involvement from Nokia/Maemo in Bugzilla only serves to reinforce this impression, along with the generally poor Maemo communication (ie. few if any blog posts or announcements of any kind whatsoever in the last 6 weeks) and the fact that most Maemo developers continue to have one hand tied behind their back thanks to Nokia corporate politics means there is no truly open discussion about anything of any worth - as soon as a technical subject gets interesting the Nokians clam up as they can't discuss certain topics.

This project demonstrates to me that Nokia simply can't "do" open source properly while still trying to maintain total control over the project along with elements of closed source code and undocumented functionality. Improvements have been promised time and time again yet the situation remains the same. Maemo still couldn't even produce a changelog for Chinook despite numerous suggestions that it would be made available, and nobody seems willing to discuss it.

Good luck to everyone who continues with this project but personally I think it's doomed, not through the fault of any individual but simply because of the oppressing corporate bureaucracy and the inability for anyone to change that. It could have been fun, instead it's a frustrating cluster f-ck.

And seeing that Ferenc has now left the project fills me with dread as he was the only guy who seemed to have a clue about the infra... :(

I'll respond to any Bugzilla emails I receive for the foreseeable future but that's going to be the extent of my involvement for now - like Nokia, I just can't be arsed.
That kind of post always makes me sad. Helpful, engaged members of the community suddenly burn out, like the recent rant-then-disappearance of Krisse (and I'm starting to think Brontide might have succumbed too (1) (2) (3).)

I wonder if I'll get all jaded and angry sometime in the near future, too?

Re: Poll: Who has been the most helpful to you? Top 10 Posters (multiple choice)

hell, i have not been around as long as them but even i can sense the crossing interests of old corp and open source.

watch bug reports go "fixed in fremantle/WONTFIX" and not knowing if fremantle will be new hardware only do not help.

basically i loved the tablet idea from theday i read about the 770 in linux journal (i probably have it here somewhere) but if the pandora goes into proper production i may well call it quits.

to tired of nokias differnenciations. maybe this is what they fear those that want to be prepared for a government overthrow...

Well, that, and Nokia's poor handling of the project in general. He's not completely gone, anyway, he still pops into #maemo every once and a while and still fights the good fight on Bugzilla most of the time. ;)

It's sad that he doesn't come over here any more.

Yes, he's been seen on #maemo, but sadly, he's still saying the same things:

....my enthusiasm has been crushed under the weight of bureaucracy and finnish corporate politics.

Milhouse still comments in Maemo Bugzilla, but quite often with a grain of criticism towards Nokia, which I can understand after all these years.

The more you communicate your expectations to make Fremantle available for the N8x0s, the more might Nokia understand. If it really helps in the end is another question of course...

(And I hope people understand that the "WONTFIX for Diablo" are not my own decisions in fact.)

...and we're the community, over here in ITt. Reggie isn't even associated with Nokia in any way. So there should be no Finnish Corporate Politics over here. Just a bunch of opinionated users doin' stuff with our tablets. So come back, Milhouse!
