Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
maybe we could all go to the forums and ask for a tablet port. They are new and looking for costumers so it maybe a great chance.
|
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
Thanks! This is pretty interesting. Definitely gonna try it on my Mac; Hopefully later it'll go on tablets.

Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
As the tablet support sip calls out of the box, there is no need for it to be ported if thats all one plans to use it for.
Now to call it a skype killer, i suspect that may be a bit premature. Skype has a edge in that only skype users can call skype users freely. |

Don't see this killing Skype anytime soon.

Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
sad really. skype is a prime example that people dont care about freedom as long as its free beer...
|
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
People care much more about "just works" than abstract concepts of "freedom". And Skype "just works" through firewalls, across routers, around proxies, etc... without having to fiddle with opening ports on your router or anything. That's what people want. Easy, and Just Works.
|
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
yep. we are lazy, if we can be...
makes me wonder what kind of freedoms we would give up if we could sit on our asses all day, having food handed to us as needed and having entertainment available at all times... |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
tso,
can you say "ALL OF THEM!?" and the sheeple will inherit their rule... |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
tso, I'm not sure that this is an issue of laziness so much as it's an issue of time and priorities. Should I as a physician spend my free time figuring out ports and proxies, as qole said, or rather use my limited resouces (e.g. time) keeping up on the latest medical research? I certainly wouldn't call my patients lazy for not researching and managing their own health, that's my job. Specialization is an inevitability of an increasing knowledge base, not a sign of laziness.

Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
program has A LOT of potential......10$ for 10,000 minutes + free texting....not bad, not bad at all

Take all the betamax offerings: their proprietary client just works, their rates for landline/mobile calls are better than skype, and you can use sip (with many ATAs or ADSL routers with phone ports that, again, just work) if you don't like/can't run the propietary program. And nowadays most sip clients "just work", especially if they're branded/preconfigured by a sip provider. |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
New beta version 1.01 was just released....The incoming AND outgoing calls work, along with voicemail, you must check your voicemail otherwise voxox will not notify you. SMS contact list SAYS it works...but I don't see it saving the numbers I text.
On the other hand, free texting along with super cheap calling WITHOUT having two numbers like with skype, could possible have already murdered skype |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
What I want? A way to receive SMS messages, since I don't have a mobile phone.
|
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
Hmm years ago there were these SMS to e-mail gateways. They'd e-mail you when SMS was arrived, some even with content. Heck, there were also solutions for the other way around. But this was before the .comboom.
As for killers. All you need is SIP and an application which handles the codecs for the audio input, audio output, video input, video output, and perhaps indeed text input, text output (for IM or SMS). |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
I deinstalled skype and installed fring, and when I fire up fring, I disconnect the standard tablet chat program; it then logs into all the IM services I could ever want.
I also use fring on my Nokia E65 and apart from visibly draining the battery it's pretty good on it too! |

Shocked? Why would you require a mobile phone?
Maybe he has a (mini-)laptop with 3G for all you know. Besides, some people believe mobile phones cause cancer, ya know... |

I am interested in this thread because it claims there is a Skype killer out there. After reading though the posts I have to agree that another 2 cent per minute SIP service provider is just that.... not a Skype killer. Skype's $2.95 per month unlimited deal is good for those in the US and Canada who talk on the phone a lot. It can work out to way below a penny a minute for them. Several SIP providers now offer 1 cent calling to PSTN in the USA. Look into Future-Nine.com and Webacall. Many SIP providers simply email your voicemail to you as .wav files, but Future-nine has a very robust voicemail system in place. I am not affiliated with any of these operations. I am just a user. |

As for the cellphone VS NIT, perhaps its that I don't have reliable high-speed Internet wherever I go (maybe XOHM/Clear/WiMax will change that for me, and I dont want a new phone to use T-Mo's ******ed 1.7 GHz 3G), like when I am driving for example, and I tend to drive 50 miles each way to work, plus wherever else I may go. So do I need to talk when in the car? No, but its very helpful, especially when you're going to meet someone, or when covering large distances. And I'm not a chatty cathy. Plus, I have Internet on the phone as well (EDGE). But know knows, maybe its me who is behind the times. How do you have Internet access everywhere you go, such that the NIT is more valuable/useful than your mobile phone? |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
I am very lucky because most of the places I go around were I live and work have WiFi. I do carry my cellphone in the event I must make an outgoing call from the car, etc.
Having such an abundance of WiFi spots where I am is a blessing. When I travel, airports and hotels (and restaurants) have the WiFi to use freely also. Even places that have closed networks freely give me their keys so I can use my N800 when I am there simply for the asking. This happened again just last night when I was in a music store. ~~~~~~~~~ Regarding VoxOx....I was at their website just now. I could NOT find any place where they describe their rate structure. Just lots of marketing fluff about free this and that without clear specifics. What are the VoxOx rates? Also, if I open an account with them, where is the information to use the N800 SIP client (the server names, etc.)? VoxOx doesn't have this shown on their site. If VoxOX does not encourage customers to bring their on devices, this would not be unique in VOIP, but it would be a big turn-off. I do not want to be forced to only use their softphone. If what they are providing is simple SIP VOIP, and it is reasonably priced, it must be accessible by my N800 or I'm not interested. Looks to me like Skype doesn't have to be worried about VoxOx at this time. Cole made an excellent comment above when he pointed out Skype's impressive ability to get through firewalls and snake through Network Address Translators. Skype really does an excellent job of that. Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
Just want to say that I don't have a mobile phone either.
Haven't had one in over 7 years. The only time I'm away from a phone, is my 25 minute drive to/from work. And of course when I'm out at lunch. I don't want to be contactable then. |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
I can't see not having my phone.

Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
OT, but there are many other post like this...
I have had GSM mobile phone since 1994. The first one cost me ~$1200. Still today I do not see myself addicted to cell phone. I can easily be without one. In fact in the past years there were times I didn't own one. (From 1996-2000.) Today I have company phone that I carry during business hours. (Other times it is turned off. I do not like to receive work related calls during my own time.) Other times I have personal phone with Prepaid plan. I use it very rarely, so that $25 refills per year is enough to cover all my personal cell phone calls. At home I have couple different VoIP plans, that cover all calls I need to make when at home. Personal cell phone to me is just a "emergency device" that I use only when needed and when I'm not at home or at work. (At work I'm forced to use company cell phone for calls because we do not have landline phones!) EDIT: My 1000th post... I never though I'd get this far when I joined iTT... :D |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
Congrats on hitting 1K Mara.
Even at 1,000 your contributions have been more quality than quantity. ~~~~~~~~ My first cellphone was 1987, have had at least one ever since, at times I have had two. Even though I carry a small cellphone, I am not a slave to it. I am not inclined to interrupt whatever I am doing to answer it unless I am expecting a call. ~~~~~~~~ I did more research into VoxOx. For those interested, they'll give two hours of calling the US and Canada if you'll be a beta tester for them. I tinkered with it last night. They are not ready for prime time just yet. (very buggy softphone). They do not support SIP ATA hardware yet, they actually specifically say they do not support their service on Nokia Tablets on their support forum. Once you install (the buggy) softphone to a PC, you can get rate information but it is only International Rates. They automatically generate and issue a free D.I.D. (a number in California, areacode 310). That was a pleasant surprise. I have deduced the rates to call PSTN in the USA are $.01, but this is not published anywhere. I could not get the voicemail to work whatsoever. After some screwing around I did get my N800 to register to their server and I could get incoming calls to the VoxOx D.I.D. they issued me, but I was unable to successfully make outgoing calls from the N800 no matter what I tried. I have a lot of experience with this SIP VOIP stuff on many platforms, but still failed to get that to work. I did managed to get VoxOx's "ReachMe" to work. You specify several PSTN numbers and they all ring at once. I could not get the Instant Messenger to work. Bottom line, IMO, these guys went live prematurely, but maybe in the next few months they'll get their feet under themselves. Even then I don't see them as a Skype Killer. The free D.I.D in Los Angeles is nice though. M5 |
Re: Voxox -New Skype Killer
For me, I have Skype but use it mostly for International calls, and by that I mean I cam calling someone in Europe, or calling anywhere while I am in Europe.
But other than that, I use my cell phone for everything. I have a land-line but don't use it. I think its because I travel a lot- everyday I'm in the car. Sometimes I turn it off when I grow tired of my digital leash, but it seldom comes down to that. |
